This game = The greatest art direction in a fighting game yet.

As far as the art direction, everything but the body types of the males and females (same bodies for all males [sans bosses] & same bodies for all females [sans Sheeva]), characters' faces (mostly the women) and the versus screen portraits (pretty much all characters) are really great.

The thing that bothers me is the translation from the great art concepts to polygons and physics. The characters' hair suffered a lot (i.e. Kitana & Smoke).

Er, not only is art subjective in nature but each series has their own look and feel. Regardless, I'll add my 2 cents. Personally, I don't believe details are the end-all-be-all of art. Too much can be distracting actually... The first MK characters were simple designs, with patterns and shapes that are easily recognizable. In an age where we can create highly detailed models, it seems a lot of people no longer appreciate the beauty of simplicity.

The art direction is horrible in this game, a few characters does look verry good such as Scorpion, Sub Zero, Ermac and Noob Saibot but most of them does not. The robots look uninspiring and generic, why the hell does they even have human organs and skeleton? The MK girls looks so stereotypical it makes me sick, it doesn't look better because you can see boobs and their curves with minimal clothing. In mk3 they all looked like real characters rather then cartoons.

They have human organs and skeletons because they're cyborgs....

Thats because in mk3 the characters were digitized models of live actors

I am going to go out on a limb here and assume you have no clue what a cyborg is.

No you are right, Terminator had human skeleton as well, right? Besides that if you played MK3 you would maybe notice that the cyborgs had metallic skeleton with mechanical parts. Surely a moderator should know this?
Also if you damage Cyber Sub Zero enough you can see his brain but when you do his X-ray his head is still intact.
And please tell me what part of Cyrax and Sektor are mechanical? The truth is that they probably just have cheap suites on them, just like Iron Man.

Actually, my post was in reference to what seemed like you thinking a cyborg with human parts was stupid. I wasn't too sure what you meant by your post exactly so my comment was about cyborgs in general. Looked like you were laughing off the idea of a cyborg with human parts.

I agree, but some models suffered where others shone. For instance, Liu Kang looks like a deformed ape. It isn't humanly possible to have his weird v-taper. Scorpion though, he's perfect- not obscenely muscular, but very cut and realistic. Looks like a man whose hit the gym and track for two and a half years. As for females, most of them have well-made models but I noticed somewhat of a more realistic (than the others) figure for Mileena... she has a bit of a lovehandle. Only thing is that she looks weird in her Flesh Pits costume; It's because the same model was used and that model was made for the original costume, which had a plated leather top and bottom/stocking that required a "thicker" model.

hahaha, yes, Liu Kang looks AWFUL in this game, especially in some scenes where his chest looks all messed up.

The general understanding is, a cyborg has both biological and synthetic components. To what degree a being has artificial parts to be considered a cyborg is not clear.

Compare Cyrax and Sektor to Star Trek's Borg (Humans or Aliens with mechanical attachments or replacements), or the Terminator (Android with a human skin), or Doctor Who's Cybermen (Androids with a human brain, I think). All have varying organic and synthetic parts, but all of them are classed as Cyborgs.

Can also add 17 and 18 from Dragon Ball Z, The Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman, and Cyborg from the Teen Titans.

I couldn`t agree more; this game is just pure eye candy, they really had some creative people on the MK staff! Just browsing through the concept art always blows me away...

i love the artstyle, but i wouldnt call it the best from a technical standpoint. upclose characters can be washed out or oddly drawn. the levels are amazing.

i also really like ssf4 graphics, but for entirely different reasons, much more "artsy" feel to it then mks gritty fantasy.

if they had a fighting game with the graphics of the witcher 2...id be sold
