The Tone of MKX

Not counting those based on glitches, I think we have been due for new ninjas for quite a while. In fact, I think there should be one MK game with an all ninja roster...just one game. It doesn't have to be canon.

That already exists! It's called Mugen. You can have as many ninjas as you want!

The only new ninja I want is Tremor, but I don't think he'll be in.
Hell, I'd even take Tremor as a non-ninja looking Arab character.

Kid NOVA likes the artistic direction NRS is taking with MKX.

MK9 was too cartoonish.

Gritty, darker, practical, etc. Love it. Kid NOVA hopes NRS sticks with this approach for future MK games after X.

That's your opinion.
I do find it cartoonish.
The characters' proportions are ridiculous, and I don't think I'm the only one to point it out.
Males have shoulders four times as wide as their heads and arms almost the size of their waist.
Females have tiny heads, grasshopper legs and no hips.

Cartoonish isn't really the proper description for what you described, though.
Out of proportion? Yes.
Over and under-exaggerated limbs? Sure.
Cartoonish? No.

Let me know the next time you see cartoons ripping each other's spines and killing each other by pulling their intestines out.

Happy Tree Friends?Cartoonish is like the visual style, not what the characters do on screen.

I'd say HTF makes more sense physics-wise and portrays suffering better than MK9 in many occasions.

I kind of agree that the tone of MK has definitely changed over the years. I just remember the feeling of going to the arcades and checking out MK1 (and later MK2) and feeling almost intimidated by the game, lol. The sound was cranked to max and every hit seemed to be accompanied with a loud audio response from the game, whether it be the announcer or the character screaming bloody murder. The music also seemed to fit the game perfectly.

I think a lot of it was the way the characters were portrayed as basically real actors on the screen. This was different from SF, for example, which was a lot more cartoon-like. Not to mention the fatalities in MK1 and MK2 seemed a bit more no-nonsense and straight to the point of killing your enemy. So basically, we were seeing real actors act out brutal kills on our screens, albeit in small sprites. Add the crazy loud audible reactions from the victim and announcer and it became a pretty intense mix.

Now that most games have moved into the realm of 3D, I am not sure how to really replicate that old style. It's kind of funny, as good as graphics have become, the characters look a lot more "fake" compared to the old 2D sprites that we used to have. Not to mention that they seem to go a little overboard with the outfits for some of the characters. Rather than the simple cloth clad ninjas of old, now they have all this crazy looking armor on. Just comes off kind of silly looking to me.

I will say that I did not mind Friendships or Babalities, though. In a game like MK2, where everything else is pretty brutal and dark, it was kind of cool to see a character like Baraka do something silly for a finisher. Plus it added a little bit of gamesmanship when playing with your friends.

Regarding MK9's story mode, I actually really didn't like it, lol. MK9 in general was kind of a letdown in the single player department for me. The story and characters were really silly and the unlockables were a joke compared to MKDA and MKD. The combat mechanics were obviously better than they have been in a while, but a lot of the other things just weren't to my liking.

It's weird, I play MK games more for the story and unlockables rather than the fighting itself...lol. Even the old days of MK1 and MK2, the thing I loved most was the world/characters. I used to buy the comics and everything.

So anyway, how do they go back to that old dark and serious tone they used to have with MK1 and MK2? No idea, lol. A lot of the cheesiness of the current games is probably due to the fact that we actually hear the characters speak now. Back then, a lot of the stuff we had to fill in ourselves with our imaginations. I guess the saying, "Less is more", applies here.

I honestly doubt the tone is going to change much, though. The reveal trailer was pretty dark and brutal, but the gameplay that I saw from E3 really looks very similar to MK9. Whether the story mode will follow suit is anyone's guess. All I am hoping for is some better and harder unlocks. I don't want to finish unlocking just about everything in one day of playing, lol.

Take care.
