I'm Gaúcho. I enjoy living in Rio Grande do Sul. I lived in São Paulo and it's a nice place, and the huge Japanese influence takes me to heaven, but it's very stressful when compared to the south. The pace is very different for a lot of reasons - not saying it's necessarily a bad thing/in an offensive way.
I can't say that I get easily offended by all that race/culture/place/whatever stuff because, really, there is a hella friggin' lot of prejudice here in Brazil. The mariachi comparison is very light (not even offensive) compared to some things I see happening here daily. So, yup, I'm used to it, specially because of my connection with Japanese descentry - oh hell yeah, just ask any descendant of a Japanese family about prejudice, offensive jokes and just plain lack of respect for their culture around these parts. You'll hear a lot. Others also have their share of experience with such ignorance (Facebook Brazilian jokes about Chinese people comes to mind...). I don't like it, though. You just get used to it in an "oh well, what the hell can I do if it never changes?" sort of way.
