Skill level according to opponant

Okay, i'm not sure if this happens to anyone else but I find, the better the player I face online, the better I play. The worse a player is online, the worse I play and im trying to reason why this is.

If im playing someone who spends 90% of the match jumping, or using characters with 1,1,1 combos, spamming teleports, I find this very frustrating. You would think players like this are easy to beat, but for some reason I almost see it as a chore. There is also the "random" factor of stuff like this.

If im playing someone good, there is a certain way they play that you sort of feel and adapt to...it's hard to explain. With a bad player, there is massive amounts of unpredicatability, and it really throws me off at times.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Happens to me a bit too. Usually the first round, and then you adapt. You're so used to actually having a game plan/mindset against good players, it goes out the window with these certain players. There's absolutely no blocking or strat whatsoever so it's hard to hit any lows which against better players that do know how to block is huge.

You basically have to play at their level which is fun sometimes, but usually just a waste of all the hard work you put into the damn game.

Personally, I get bored easily when playing with people that is not that good in this game ..... I see that rarely, people with negative ratio might be able to put a good fight and be a challenge, most of time, they can win a round at least, but, cannot put a fight that could be epic, so, it's more as a training session than a challenge

I prefer to lose 10 in a row to good players, that, somehow, give me challenge and help to improve my game, showing me more tricks in this game I was not aware, than , winning 50 fights against easy and weak players, that will not contribute deeply for gameplay improvement.

this happens me all the time ... in my head its like he couldnt possibly do another teleport ... oh no there it is every time haha its almost funny in a pathetic sorta way
on a side note i lost to a sheeva player dressed as a unicorn teleport spamming yesterday!!!
good times

This has happened since the beginning of competitive fighting games. People will play up or play down to their opponent a lot of times.

Doesn't happen all the time, but losing to a player you know you should easily beat is awful.

Well it's quite easy for me to tell if another player is good from the beginning. If they are not that good once I land a combo I usually demolish them rather quickly as I'm pretty much on a relentless attack. Plus I fight with Kitana so it's in my best interest to be the aggressor as Kitana is not as strong being a counter fighter

It's like me and you are brothers or something. I usually have a hard time with bad players also. Maybe if they fix a lag a bit more I can make it an easy win. Whenever I see someone choose a teleporting 1,1,1 Character I bring out my Raiden or Smoke to bring them down. :)

I agree, but sometimes I either play really on or really off no matter who the opponent. I really can't stand when I do a 3 button kombo and the 3rd button press doesn't register or I press 2 mid kombo and I smudge over and press start.

a huge part of it is the lag. it makes it easier to spam and harder to react to spam and random teleports. also it makes some combos harder to do. so facing someone who spams teleports and 111 and jumps all over the screen is harder to face than someone who knows how to play and isnt playing to abuse the lag.

Well, I am one of those bad players you guys must mean. I only recently got this game and am still learning. I can barely beat Shao Kahn on "beginner" and I can't land any combo's yet. My strategy as of now is basically to learn 1 special attack such as a spear throw or a teleport and then spam that attack until I learn a 2nd special attack and then mostly use those 2... and just add another special attack at a time. Some characters I'm starting to learn combo's such as 1,2,2 or 2,1,2 or like that but I still have lost all my games online. Most people manage to "juggle" me in the air within an instant and then just beat me to a pulp from that.

One time I did notice though how my opponent tried to 'match' himself to my skill level. I was trying to figure out Stryker's ranged attacks but half the time I fumble my keystrokes so he doens't do anything. Eventually he picked a character which, I'm assuming, he wanted to learn too and I could see him trying out various stuff on his character and he wasn't so good anymore. Either that or he handed over the controller to his little brother or something.

I sure hope I'm not bothering good players by trying to fight them anyways, it feels like I learn a lot from them even though they beat me everytime. Most people always want to have another go as soon as the fight ends.

Not everyone is able to pick up the game and be good at it, it's understandable if your not good if you are new to the game. My advice would be to play story mode and determine 1 or 2 characters you would like to learn, from there go into training and start practicing their basic combo strings and from there build on those with specials. For a beginner I would recommend someone like Scorpion, Sub Zero, or someone with a disabling move. Also while in practice mode learning the strings try to learn those character's special moves because it is gonna be really hard for you to win unless you know a handful of good moves.

What you've described is what I go through everyday in MK. When I play really good players from here or TYM, I use all my tools, strategies, and wits and it ends up being an amazing fight.

But when the A-holes do all the jumping and random BS I'm at a loss and I just let the pieces land where they may.
It's almost like I lose interest in the fight and just say screw it.

I think the reason for this is because when two decent/good players are playing against each other, the match is like a dance, where you take turns leading and following. You learn each other's strategy and play style, and adapt accordingly to counter, with the person who adapts faster usually being the winner.

When you play against bad players, it's mostly just complete randomness, and the countering/adaptation of the match all goes out the window.

I was wondering if this was just me. I have had several nights where I would accept fights with people who had crappy records like mine and the player sucks and I end up losing ... so I would accept fights with people who have a much better record than mine and its awesome. I think the post above me words it well. It feels like a dance and everything just seems to flow right.

Of course there are times it doesnt matter, I get beat by people much better and much worse than I am. :O

Oh wow. This whole thread has made me feel ages better. I thought I was the only one having a difficult time playing against people who clearly do not know how to play.
