The demon Sareena first appeared in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as one of Quan Chi's personal assassins. She and her two partners, Kia and Jataaka, were ordered to kill Sub-Zero before he reached Quan Chi. They were defeated, but Sub-Zero strangely spared Sareena's life. Later, as Sub-Zero battled Quan Chi, Sareena suddenly appeared and helped him to defeat the sorcerer. After expressing her desire to escape the Netherealm with him, she is shot in the back with a bolt of energy by Shinnok. She collapses into an enraged Sub-Zero's arms and appears to die.

It is later revealed in Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition that Sareena was not killed by Shinnok's attack, but rather her human form was destroyed. Her essence was then banished to the Fifth Plane of the Netherealm as punishment for her betrayal, where she would suffer for years. After years of being trapped, Sareena discovered the portal Quan Chi and Scorpion used to escape the Netherealm shortly before Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. She went through the portal and is transported to Outworld where she later discovered a way to restore her human form without Quan Chi's magic by absorbing the energy of the realm.

Shortly after regaining her human form, Sareena encountered the younger brother of the Sub-Zero she met years before. Feeling that he owed her for helping his brother, Sub-Zero granted her sanctuary with the Lin Kuei back on Earthrealm. In gratitude, Sareena pledged her loyalty to the clan, swearing to help defend it from its enemies.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, it is revealed that Sareena followed Sub-Zero into the Netherealm, saving him from being killed by Noob Saibot and Smoke. She and Sub-Zero were victorious, but after the battle, Sareena lost control of her human form and returned to her true demon self. Thinking her to be a threat, Sub-Zero attacked and she fled, not wanting to harm him. However, she was later attacked by Noob Saibot, Smoke, and her former master Quan Chi, who demanded she provide them the metallic item necessary to enter the Lin Kuei Temple. At first, Sareena refused, determined to remain loyal to Sub-Zero. But Quan Chi then cast his dark sorcery upon her, returning her to her human form and then convincing her that she can never be good and that she is simply a pure evil demon. Swayed by Quan Chi's corruption, she agreed to serve him once again.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest mode, Taven encounters Sareena still serving Quan Chi alongside Kia and Jataaka in the Red Dragon's lair. They battle, but all the three assassins are ultimately defeated by the half-god. Presumably, after the battle, Sareena escapes Quan Chi's hold over her.

In her Armageddon ending, she defeats Blaze, causing his power to flow into her. She is left unconscious until Sub-Zero reaches the top of the pyramid and revives her. When she awakens, she realizes that she had gained the ability to freeze. She then confronts Quan Chi and freezes him in a block of ice. Sareena and Sub-Zero place the sorcerer in the Lin Kuei temple, where he will remain frozen forever.

They should expand the Sub Zero/ Sareena love storyline.

I remember the two sparing each others life, but I don't remember there being a romantic interest between the two. Was there?

I think Sareena has a really good look, with a good storyline, but she still comes across as a minor, side character. With further development and focus she can become a great character.

Sareena is a pretty cool character. I wouldn't mind seeing her in MK9 but Scarlett already took the throwing knife thing and that's pretty much all Sareena had going for her. As for the love intrest thing I wouldn't know, I always spine ripped her in Mythologies, Sparing any of the bosses cheats you out of fully enjoying some of the fights.

Sareena is at the center of it all ! Her knowledge would be invaluable to the earthrealm warriors. She is probably the only one who can tell us/Tundra WTF happened to his older brother (Bi Han) and how became Noob Saibot. That story is unexplored. She is the only one connected to very powerful and core characters like Quan Chi, Shinnok, Noob, and Sub-Zero. She has to come back, and it's obvious she will in some form or fashion due to the fact that she is in the game in some capacity already.

MKM:Sub-Zero is probably my favorite MK game of all time. No other MK game went into as much detail about the mysterious netherrealm and MK's Origin and back story. MK needs more adventure/MMO games like this because the world of MK is way to vast to cover accurately in just a simple fighting game.

Honestly I don't know if the NRS team has any idea of what to do with Sareena.

After all, wasn't she suppose to be in Mortal Kombat 4? But was ultimately replaced by Fujin?

Then I think she ended up on the cutting room floor for Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, which was why she was placed in the oh so terrible Gamboy Advance port of Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition.

I even think she was suppose to be in Mortal Kombat: Deception, but that piece of information could be wrong.

That type of history just seems to tell me that the people behind the mythos have no real idea of what they want her to be.

I mean they developed the idea that she is a demon, and that she doesn't wish to be in the Netherrealm, which was why she wanted Sub-Zero (Bi Han) to take her with him back to Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

Somehow though, the fan base took that small snippet of a demon looking to punch her one ticket out of hell and made it into a romance, which is why I think those at NRS had her Mortal Kombat: Armageddon ending have her become a cryomancer, it was something to throw to the shippers.

Of course her part in Armageddon didn't make any sense to begin with. MK:TE established the fact that she found her way out of the Netherrealm by use of the portal Quan Chi used at the beginning of MK:DA. They also revealed that she learned to use the energies of Outworld to give herself the human form that Quan Chi gifted her with originally. So, how come she was so quick to crumble back to being Quan Chi's underling after helping Sub-Zero out in the Netherrealm at the fallout of MK:D? You would figure that she would've just escaped back to Outworld and then just get her human form back, and then choose to fight alongside Sub-Zero against his enemies. I mean he was willing to give her sanctuary to pay off the debt of her aiding his brother to begin with. Plus with all of Sub-Zero's enemies piling up by the time of MK:A, you would figure he would take whatever ally he could.

Anyway, if she were to come back, I would think that they should actually go back to her using the twin kama that she had back in MKM:SZ. Of course, they would have to flesh out the move list outside of the "kama throw" and "kama spin" that she had in that game.

NRS had the opportunity to give Sareena at least a cameo outside the Pit in MK9. Even including her in the storyline. But if they dont develop her moveset, I dont think she'd be a playable character.

She can be in future games coming up, if possible. As like someone above me said, she can be a major catalyst Kuai to find a way to bring back his older brother from the corruption of the Netherrealm (although not likely since Bi-Han willingly let the corruption take over).

For the special moves department, I can brainstorm some ideas, plus the enhanced version of it. Plus they can still let her use the dagger special, although very different from Skarlet. Look at the Johnny Cage's and Jade's Shadow Kick (Blazing Nitro Kick for Jade). Although they both can do it, the properties, damage and animation are different from each other.

Special Moves and Enhanced Moves for Sareena:

Throwing Knife
*Crippling Knives: She throws 3 knives in very quick successions to her opponent that stuns them for a few seconds. Almost impossible to dodge since they hit high, mid and low. She can delay the throwing til either released or dash cancel.
5-Star Kick
*Demonic Velocity Kicks: She starts with a high punt kick. If it connects cleanly, the opponent gets sent high up and as they are falling, Sareena begins delivering 12 kicks before finishing it with a high crescent kick.
Gut Punch
*Guiling Gut Wrencher: She disappears and reappears behind the opponent and quickly delivering two demonic punches to them, with the last one knocking them back.
Dark Energy (New Move): She shoots a small green ball at the opponent.
*Demonic Blast (New Move): She fires a medium size green demon head at the opponent that knocks them back.

I like that movelist of yours. Plus that enhanced 5-star kick with the crescent moon kick suits her.

Very good movelist! I hope she has her Kamas back. Nitara can just use her claws.
