Realism in fighting games, PARTICULARLY Mortal Kombat

I love the idea of what is happening in the MK games as of late, but some things bother me, and I think I speak for many MK fans when I say the gameplay needs to be a little more realistic. OK, I've heard all the stuff about "Games are an escape from reality." True, but many video games are based on true events and lifestyles. There's no reason we can't bring some realism to them. Particularly with MK, I'll give you some examples. How is it it round 1 I knock my opponent off a cliff and he becomes impaled on a spike, and yet 2 seconds later, round 2 starts and there my opponent is, about to face off with me again? And one thing I've heard mentioned before is the blood and weapon effects. If someone(Sub-Zero) stabs you OVERHEAD with a giant sword of ice, I think ur gonna be bleeding for a while. The loss of impaling from DA kinda got rid of that. That feature made things seem a bit realistic, although in real life the impaling would be it, period. The blood flows pretty in an interesting and realistic manner, but how much blood are you gonna lose from one little punch to the face(especially from a woman? )

Not to sound picky, but I think some of us want these realistic things. These may be subtle, small details, but they are desired, and I believe small things aren't are the easiest to do, and have been overlooked all thoughout the history of fighting games. I hope we see some changes, and if one series can master it, it's MK!

Ok, here's the deal. In 1994-95, Ed Boon and company were rolling along with the production of MK3. Boon and John Tobias thought that the game could use a little spicing up, hence the addition of the combo system and the run button. Ed Boon later quoted, after the game was released, "Reality is boring. Nobody wants to pay for reality. The only way to escape reality is through these video games." Therefore, from then on, the games have had sort of a surreal feeling to them instead of a straight, realistic feel.

Well, I think it's more of a balancing issue. Some people (namely beginners) have a hard time avoiding the death traps, so I don't think it should be necessarily taken out of the game. I'm pretty sure you can change the win limit to one round. Either that or turn death traps off.

I COMPLETELY agree. I really miss impaling. It was just fun.

Well, I wouldn't say "realistic," more of a pseudo-realistic. No one has globs of blood 2 inches in radius. As far as the punching and other moves go, You can't have Mortal Kombat without gallons of blood, and that's just that.

Yeah, I see your point, but then again, there are a lot of us that want it as un-realistic as possible. That allows for the dark and twisted humor to come in. There has to be at least ONE fatality in an MK game that makes me laugh or drop my jaw in disbelief. It's fun to go over the top. NOTHING in Mortal Kombat has EVER been subtle, and that's one of the reasons why it's STILL my favorite fighting series of all time. Subtlety works in the more "realistic" fighters. Virtua Fighter and Tekken are way more realistic and subtle, but they're NOT Mortal Kombat.

The guys at Midway in Boon's team are always improving on their formula. Give 'em a little more time and see what diabolical things they come up with. They may not make it as realistic as you want, but I think it'll always be fun and that's what counts.

Oh I love the humorous stuff. I'm one of the fans who still misses and wishes they would bring back friendships and animalities. Of course it has to be unrealistic in ways, as it is a fantasy, but the little details mean a lot to me. it actually was really cool to me to see in DA they came up(FINALLY!) with the concept of fighters becoming visibly bruised and bloodied. I Honestly would love to see a fighter that would actually be the equivelant of what an ACTUAL fight would be like, in terms of difficulty, damage from weapons and after-effects, injuries, etc. but that will likely not happen anytime soon.

You want realism from a game that is famous for a man pulling people's spines and heads from their bodies? Right... :P

Everyone who buys Mortal Kombat knows some idea of what kind of game their getting, a fighting game renoun for lots of blood and guts and gorey things being in it. Unrealistic or not, thats what they know its about (besides the fighting). Does it matter if you can't do it in real life? No! A lot of people use games to escape real life or just for pure entertainment. Its also the same with games as with movies, you never expect a movie to be 100% correct to the core (east I don't) so the same thing goes with games.

You know what I'm saying :?

Yeah sorry, it just struck me as really funny as there's reality, there's computer games and then there's Mortal Kombat.

I like the death trap idea but mayb it should only work in a winning round.
I hate how you can block a sword (or any weapon for that matter) with your bare hands /arms!! it should at least be a tiny bit realistic and your hand to hand blocks dont work on weapons!

Mortal Kombat can't be 100% realistic ever cause of its fantasy aspect. Right from MK1 we have a evil sorcerer, a freak of nature with four arms and a Thunder God. So right from MK1 you know full well you'll never get a MK game where their gonna go to great lengths to make it 100% realistic.

Yeah, that would suck I mean, you know in the moies, a guy slices you with a sword and you die (IE Kill Bil Last Samurai) Cuz then it would be like 1 second rounds! That would suck!

I have an idea if u go to options and put it on:

no death traps

low blood level

1 round

u might find it a little bit more realistic but thats just me

Yeah, but why would anyone in their right mind do that? It would decrease the entertainment value. People want to see extreme violence and blood and gore when they think of Mortal Kombat.
