Cage hasn't really matured for good just yet, he's just on his way now. IMO, the reason Cage acted more mature and responsible towards the end of the story was because the situation demanded it; lives were being lost, and the idea of Kahn conquering Earthrealm had become a very real possibility to Cage. So there wasn't any room for his usual behavior. We don't know how he'll act now that Earthrealm is not in danger anymore; he could go back to being his old self, at least until later on in the story of MK10. With that said, however, I doubt that considering everything he's seen and been through now.

I do agree though that Cage and Sonya both survived for a reason; their arcade endings hint at this even further. In all honesty though, I think that Sonya might simply be still around to become a love interest for Cage, although I hope she has more of a serious role than that.

I don't think you give Cage enough credit for being a honest serious good guy.

I think he'd be more than willing to help, with "rebuilding" and preparing for the future after all the shit he saw/fought. He fought Kano to save Sonya, didn't even want to kill any bad guys he fought.

He has a really good heart, and to act like he'd go do his own selfish thing just cuz earth is safe now. I don't think that's entirely fair. (Edit: noticed you don't think that's gonna happen either)

joking doesn't mean you're immature. Leon Kennedy from RE6 jokes all the time during grim situations as a way to cope. But he's serious. And I think Cage is 100% serious person. He just jokes to make light of things.

I don't personally think that he'll go back to his old ways, so I actually am giving him credit. All I'm saying is that, at the end of the day, we can't say for certain that Johnny Cage is completely ready to be the main hero just yet (keyword: yet, if NRS is seriously planning on making him the main hero, then they'll make sure he's ready) and that he still has to grow into becoming the new protector of Earthrealm if he becomes that.

I never said that he was completely immature and selfish either, which is why I said "on his way"; he's changed from what he was like when he first joined the tournament, but he isn't completely immune to going back to his old ways

Raiden is far from my favourite character; call me crazy but I think using him as the main Protagonist could be very interesting concerning the storyline as well as taking the character into a fresher and more interesting direction. Since we have a slightly new timeline NRS could go with the whole 'giving up his divinity to aid the Earthrealmers' idea implemented before to pit him against arguably his arch-nemesis of the series; Shinnok and maybe even fail? Leading him to trying to establish a last resort option of allying with Outworld? Orrrrr they could just slightly reboot/remake the MK4 storyline...

Technically, he was the main protagonist of MK9

I do love the idea of him giving up his godhood to fight against Shinnok though

And what's wrong with his old ways? A hero/protagonist doesn't have to be super serious.

I think he's actually already hero status, and I think he's protagonist ready. You say he needs to build? Even raiden built himself as the protagonist in mk9. The whole point of a great protagonist is them learning and getting stronger. That'd be lame to have him become the protagonist after he gets all bad-ass you'd miss the growth. And that growth is the best part of being the protagonist. And makes the final moment that much sweeter.

I too think Johnny Cage isn't really ready. He definitely needs to get stronger (he got his ass kicked a number of times in the MK9 storymode) and if he loses the control of his powers, he has to learn to sustain it and get disciplined as well, all of these things can't happen overnight. Yes as you said the growth is the best part of being the protagonist but only if it's takes it time in that regard and is not rushed. Just going off the Mk9 story ending, though Cage matured a lot he isn't really there yet, atleast not where Liu Kang and Kung Lao were. Plus he should definitely change his old ways I feel, not by getting rid of his humor but by making him more of a warrior than comic relief and making him more responsible. Perhaps like Goku from DBZ.

@Critical- I never said he had to be completely serious, though

When I say old ways, I'm not talking about him simply joking as you seem to think. If/when he becomes the main hero I expect him to still crack a few jokes because ultimately, he's just not the person who should be super serious and brooding

I'm talking about how vain and materialistic he used to be when he first joined the tournament

Also, who said I wanted him to be badass before he becomes a protagonist? The growth of the protagonist is the best part of the protagonist, yes, but what I'm saying is that he isn't ready for that level of major development just yet. He isn't mentally ready to take on the responsibility of protecting all of Earthrealm. He has experienced and seen things that have set him on the path to eventually becoming the main protagonist, but he hasn't magically become more responsible and dependable because of that. He has personal obstacles that he still has to get through before being ready to take on the role of the main hero. It's like how Bruce Wayne had to get over his personal fear of bats and train before becoming Batman and taking over the responsibility of saving Gotham
