PC version of Mortal Kombat 9...

I hope you're right, mate. More and more fighting games are headed for the PC, but I just don't care about any of them, besides MK. It's time for NRS to break the cycle and reach out to the PC audience - last thing we saw on the PC was MK4 in 1998. Heh. 15 years of absence, and we still care about their games. Even though they deserve to have the shit pirated out of that game, if it comes out, I am positive it's gonna sell great. If there ever was a Mortal Kombat that could do great even on a highly pirated platform such as the PC, that one is definitely it.

I'm actually used to the image of NRS always being the only company that would never release anything on the PC ( back in the days when Deception came out, I was severely disappointed that it wouldn't be released for the PC - since then ), but MK9 is the perfect candidate. An incredibly successful game, filled with tons of content, based on the Unreal 3 engine - and the best Mortal Kombat in ages ( if it had the Run function of MK3/UMK3, it would have been the best MK ever, hands down - that Dash is crap, but I will get used to it eventually ). If they ever got a shot at winning back the PC gamers, it's with this game.

Even though I told NRS to go and **** itself before, I might get this. Like, on a Steam sale...

Otherwise, they really have to do something to win me over, and I'm pretty sure this applies to every other self-respecting PC gamer who has experienced the abandoning from Midway/NRS.

Just by coming outta the closet and saying "hey guise, MK9 PC!!!111" is not going to cut it, unfortunately.

Go figure. If that John fellow has just contracted the "trolling" from Boon, and is just yanking our chain here, he deserves to have his kneecaps busted. Apparently he used to be a part of the Midway team and is now an executive producer at Disney.

At last someone had the balls to say something. I can assure you this is not trolling, it's more like a confirmation. We are close, guys, it looks like an announcement is really just around the corner.

And why is that exactly? Looking back Midway had every right to stop making MK games for the PC. Industry conditions for fighting games on PC were bad back in the day and they never made a profit from ANY MK game on the PC even though those were always the versions that stood the closest to the arcade ones. Now they are making a PC version of MK9 because they care know they can make money with it. That shows they care for PC gamers and basically as soon as there's an opportunity they release an MK game.

If this is coming to the pc what do you want to see added to the game since this should be the true complete version.
All Retro costumes from mk1-umk3
Bosses as playable offline
the inclusion of motaro and cyber smoke would make this game complete in my opinion.

I don't care about any of that, if they fix up the netcode. And I would totally prefer Dash to be replaced with Run ( or at least Run to be implemented as an option along with Dash ). Perfect online multiplayer + Run + whatever's in the Komplete console edition = I'm at 101 %.

EDIT: And replace Freddy with someone a little more suited to the game universe. Cause Freddy's incorporation was a totally idiotic move - as well as Kratos, honestly, though he does have some nice stuff. Nevertheless, those characters simply don't belong in the world of MK and should be removed.

Yeah, right. And where exactly do you get that bit of information, "industry conditions for fighting games on PC were bad back"? If we ignore this claim, I think the real reason is rather obvious. We just need to take a look at the history of their released titles. The way Midway/NRS has treated PC showed their "care" a long time ago, and it was and still is crystal clear. There were so many threads and petitions and articles written to get the dang games on the PC right after Deadly Alliance came out, guess what their response was? Nothing or no.

With a proven track record, and their overall attitude, I'm still expecting the worst: a console port with nothing new brought to the table. They haven't done anything else to prove me wrong.

I could have forgiven the team at one point. They came from arcade (developing for specific hardware) to console (developing for specific hardware) and leaving PC porting to an outside team as they had no experience with anticipating different hardware configs etc. But that it's so easy to go multi platform with Unreal Engine 3 is inexcusable, especially when it's not just the 4 of them anymore, they have a lot of people there, all of which will be familiar with PC. There's no excuse to not release on PC anymore. None at all.

Midway stated back in the day that none of their PC versions were profitable, they actually lost money doing all of them. Mortal Kombat is the most popular fighting game in the U.S. and Europe so that statement really shows how bad industry conditions were in that time and that's why I say it's perfectly understandable why they were not released. Midway had a lot of financial troubles before they went under so it's totally acceptable from a business point of view if they wanted to cut their losses. It's like if you were working on a place where instead of getting a salary you have to pay for working there. :D

It's a shame the PS2 game were not released but at least these days it's not an issue because you can play all the MK games on PC if you know how to set up a PS2 emulator (and who knows, maybe someday we'll get a "PS2 HD collection" that will be released on PC). It's fairly easy.

As for what to change: nothing regarding game mechanics. Running instead of dashing? Bad idea, even though I love MK3 running is a bit cheesy, dashing is more sophisticated and has more tactical possibilites (you'll understand if you play Street Fighter 4 or the PS2 MK games). I also don't understand what's the problem with characters like Freddy Krueger. I love that character and I think he is a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat. He is ruthless, evil and actually his MK9 ladder story seems interesting.

As for what to add:
- all the customes of course, even the ones from the Vita version
- I'd really like a PC exclusive character, one that could serve as a love letter to PC gaming, a classic PC game character. Duke Nukem would work wonderfully and he is the best choice of course (actually some people even petitioned for him and you can even find videos on the web where Johnny Cage is replaced with Duke :D), just imagine a Shrinker attack and the one-liners, a lot of people would buy the game just because of Duke. :D Anyway I dunno, Tychus Findlay from Starcraft 2, Doom guy, Gordon Freeman (not really fitting but still :)), Caleb from Blood, Adam Jensen or JC Denton from Deus Ex (I'd go for Jensen, he has fun attacks), I'd be happy to see one of them. Fun was always part of MK so why not?

Number 1, I don't remember them saying this out loud and number 2, they didn't even create the PC versions themselves...It was an outsourced, rather poor quality port for almost all the 4 games (the 3rd one being decent). Considering the fact that they couldn't give rats ass to create solid versions of the game for the PC, they then got away with shafting/screwing/forgetting/whatever you want to call it the PC market altogether, so therefore they just have no excuse. What was Ed Boon's twitter troll/reason for not releasing MK9 for PC? Because "nobody asked for it".

Like I've said before.. much of the reasons why fighting games didn't sell well on the PC in the past are ancient history such as the major ones:

1) Poor controller options - The PC can use whatever controllers one can use on a console and more and it's easier than ever for games to support them. Back in the DOS days when they ported MK1-3 that wasn't so. I'm surprised that even today some people don't realize this... that personal computers can easily use control methods other than keyboard and mouse.

Nobody has to share a keyboard or have one person on the keyboard and the other person on a controller unless they want to. Additionally.. any of the technical hurdles older computers had with controls are a thing of the past.

2) Small computer monitors and having to huddle around one to play two players - Also not really a problem these days especially in the age of HDMI and wireless tech and ever growing display sizes. Hell, why not hook up a PC to a projector if you want a really big picture?

There may have been other historical reasons that I forgot off the top of my head but those are the major ones that are no longer a problem. Add that to the fact that they are not using proprietary engines for the game any more and are using industry standard Unreal Engine.

About platform specific characters. I would bet if MK9 on PC got an exclusive character I'd bet probably be one from one of Valve's games considering it'd be on Steam.

I don't get why a probable additional character would have to be an outsider to the MK Universe. I strongly disagree with the notion that random game characters should make it in MK - they simply have no place in this game. They are not a part of the gameworld, and the MK universe has totally enough to offer. It shouldn't be soiled for commercial reasons ( implementing characters from other franchises ).

One of the reasons MK9 is great is because it was a throwback to the classics - I even liked the idea of simply calling it "Mortal Kombat" - short, simple, powerful. Contrasting opposites with the dreadful MK vs DC Universe - b***h please, comic book characters in a Mortal Kombat game?! Sure, a lot of people would like that, but that is a complete disgrace to the game universe, and its traditions. Mortal Kombat is what it is. They should focus on expanding storylines, involving new characters, not slapping in ones from existing franchises. That is just plain stupid.

I was actually glad when I saw how lame the previous MK was - that totally coincided with my expectations of Midway/NRS progressively degrading the cult series, instead of keeping it alive and kicking. With that atrocity of a game they chose to abandon the very essence of what Mortal Kombat is, and it definitely suited them well.

I agree with all of these that you said my friend! Nowdays all you need to do to play fighting games on pc is to connect a 360 controller or a arcade stick and you are ready. But there are lot of idiots who dont understand that you can do it on pc. In the next few months Valve will reelease Steambox that according to rumors it will be a pc at the size of a console equiped already with controller and keyboard and mouse. Maybe then a lot of these idiots will realize how easy is to connect a controller on pc.

What commented they deleted? The comments that pc fans wrote on Boon twitter? What exactly happend? Anyway, they will officialy announce when they will be ready to announce it.

They don't need to announce it officially. They JUST need to announce they are workin on it. That the title is actually REAL. No need for a date/month/whatever.

I'll be short because this is getting a bit like pissing in the wind.

No1: Just because you don't remember something doesn't mean it didn't happen. :D
No2: Doesn't really matter who ported it, neither the quality of the ports (they were not quite good, you're right) the fact still is that the publisher and Midway never saw a penny of that money coming back. Anyway back in the early days it was a common thing that other companies ported games to other systems. FYI: Midway only developed the arcade versions, all the other versions (SNES, DOS, AMIGA, Genesis etc.) were simple ports done by other contracted developers so there was never any "we hate PC, we don't give a shit about PC" thing, the simple truth is that they were arcade developers.

I don't remember it because it did not happen. Your replies are making less sense on a daily basis now. Part of me thinks you're trolling, while the other part thinks that you'll be the first guy to come to NRS/Midway defense at all and any cost.

No2: Doesn't really matter who ported it,

Yes it does actually. If Midway were caring about the PC community, they would've done the ports themselves, assuring top-notch quality. Instead, they outsourced. Outsourced because they didn't want to take credit for sub-par ports, and outsourced because apparently they have some kind of a grudge against PC, therefore telling it to stick it for such a long time.

It's like them saying "here you bunch of upset kiddies, have them MK games and just piss off already!! LEAVE. US. ALONE!! complaints? not our fault!!"

This isn't far from the truth as well, stop putting a blind eye on their attitude and admit the fact that the MK games on PC are long overdue.

neither the quality of the ports (they were not quite good, you're right) the fact still is that the publisher and Midway never saw a penny of that money coming back.

Don't expect great sales from s***ty games. I thought this as much was obvious.

The fact that they've outsourced and gave us second-hand versions of the game shows their intentions. When they moved out from Arcades to Consoles it cements this further. And with all the crap they're doing right now, with Ed Boon trolling/being oblivious with his remarkable "no one asked for it" puts the rusted nail into the coffin for good.
