Mortal Kombat OUTSELLS MKvsDC x4, but are Warner Disappointed?

Link to the data would be nice. Are these units sold or units shipped? Be sure you're not confusing the two, because there is a big difference. I do find it a little surprising this one hasn't outsold MK:D or MK:DA, but I'm sure it will over time. Game costs definitely play a huge factor. I have at least 3 friends waiting to pick it up because they need more money.

I think 3D fighters have their place, like Tekken; but taking your series from 2D to 3D just doesn't work in my opinion. It changes what the players know and are used to. 2D series should stay 2D and the same for 3D, in most cases.

Edit: Never mind, a link was provided.

Wow. At first I didn't think it was meant as an insult, but the more I think about it the more I begin to wonder. For the record, Aldo, I've been an MK fan longer than you've been alive.

My preference for the 3D and the fighting styles was based on immersion and story. I may not be a "hardcore" tournament-style "gamer" but I am a fan. Fast may be all well and good for you competitive types, but as you pointed out, the market is a lot larger than that group.

I remember being in elementary school and being surprised at how popular the original MK was. I never got the impression that the majority of people were all about how the fighting engine compared to other games. It was about the digital actors, blood, fatalities, and darker story. MK drew in crowds of people who never played fighting games, or sometimes any games, before.

But that was the first time. I don't think it's really what the game is or isn't that's affected the sales. The market has charged in a number of ways, and what's more important now is how this game is selling compared to another current gen fighter.

And as far as the original question: is WB disappointed? Think of it like this: The Empire Strikes Back didn't do as well the original Star Wars, but would YOU have been disappointed with its performance? This game is doing plenty well. It's almost on par with Portal 2 for Pete's sake.

VGChartz is not a reliable source of data. If it said Portal 2 for PC outsold MK that may be believable but I can tell you this there wasn't ONE GameStop that I went to that had even close to the Portal 2 pre-order numbers than what MK had. 3-5x more in most cases. In some cases it was something like 800 to 50 copies. Portal 2 will sell better on Steam for PC as it's the target platform.

That said I don't believe VGChartz really and they are known to be sourcing fairly inaccurate info.

MKDA sold great, and it's possible that MK9 has out sold it but until we know for sure it's just rumor. When WB wants to release proper sales numbers they will. I've heard some estimates but that's just estimates.

holy sh*t look how good socom 4 is selling,(i thought it wouldnt be that much of a factor) the fact that mk9 was released with 2 big games, games beeing more expensive now a days and the banning of mk in australia plays a major roll in first week sales but im preety sure sales will pick up.

Over half a million sales (accross both platforms) in the first week in JUST America is nothing to scoff at for sure. Will be interesting to see what the worldwide figures come out to. Its pretty much neck and neck between MK and Portal 2 as well when you look at it accross all platforms, though I doubt those figures would include Steam sales for Portal 2 which would probably give it a big chunk more.

According to VGChartz this is their Worldwide Totals for last week:

1 PS3 Mortal Kombat 421,898
2 X360 Portal 2 403,181
3 PS3 Portal 2 319,533
4 X360 Mortal Kombat 310,085
5 PS3 SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs 199,434

I still don't trust it, doesn't look right to me and VGChartz is known to be inaccurate and their numbers are pretty much admittedly made up. But it's the only public info that's out there really.

Not saying the numbers are right. But i feel like you are underestimating the popularity of Portal a bit ;)

Disappointed? Hrm.. With all of these post release parties and after parties and after after parties; I strongly doubt it.

if mk9 had been a new type of digitized mortal kombat game or a 3d graphics mk game that played like the old games, with the old button layout, dashing, ex moves, similar frames to the old games, and proper cancelling, i guarantee you that the numbers would have been incredible. lastly, if mkhd is ever released, it will destroy any numbers that mk9 or any of the 3d mk games have done in the last 10 years.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you on this one. Although this game doesn't have the deepest fighting engine and there are some flaws, it surely plays a hell of a lot better then any other mk game and the graphics are amazing. I love the original trilogy too (esp. mk2) but that gameplay just feels outdated. With that being said, I feel if they did happen to go back to those roots, it would only appeal to old school mk fans that most likely already bought this game anyway.

As far as sales go, I want to see how it stacked up to other fighting games opening weeks. As long as the sales are competeable with mvc and tekken, I'm sure WB is happy.

Here are the main factors to answer all your question

1) The economy was WAY better when Mk Deadly Alliance and Deception were released.
2) The games were cheaper back then.
3) MK9 was banned in Australia and Germany.
4) MK9 had a lot of competition on release day.
5) MK9 is still getting its reputation back as more and more people will be purchasing it.

The sales number will pick up, slowly but surely, I know a lot of SF fans and MvsC fans and Tekken fans are purchasing this game. I still think over half a million in 1 week is awesome. I dont see why WB would be disappointed, And another thing is that when MK10 releases MK's reputation will have came back and MK10 will be the bigger seller. It will be bigger faster and more polished gameplay. MK9 is MK's real entry back into the series. Give it some time.

But i feel like you are underestimating the popularity of Portal a bit

Nah, I don't think he is, tbh I'm suprised Portal 2 sold that many copies on console at all, I fully expected the vasty majority of its sales to be through Steam (which isn't reflected in those figures). Its interesting though that, according to those numbers at least, Portal 2 sold more copies on 360 than on PS3 when PS3 was the system they were doing the big push for with its Steam integration.

As an example, i bought SSFIV way after it was released, because (as someone said) i had lost the "SF magic". Maybe MK needs more time.
Btw, all the economy thing is really something to keep in mind when u compare MK DA and MK9

Whether people like to admit it or not, Deadly Alliance and Deception were great games and they were VERY popular when they were released.

QFT

Also, I loved the original 2d games just like everyone else, but it seems to me like a lot of MK fans are blinded by their nostalgia. They were great games, just not the epitome of awesomeness that a lot old school MK fans say they were.

And tweek86, your not the only one who would prefer a 3d Mortal Kombat, I too would prefer it. But I got to say, this new Mortal Kombat is definitely my new favorite fighting game, even if it isn't in 3d. I'm just so happy that they actually made it balanced and tournament worthy. I hope one day they start another NRS development team, and they work on a MK spin off that is a 3d fighter. That way we can have a dev team that still works on 2d MK games, and one that works on 3d ones. Yea, I know, its unlikely. :(

I don't think it'll be much of an issue, as a general rule PS2/Xbox games of the past will outsell PS3/360 games as PS2s (especially) were cheaper and sold a lot more so there was a larger market, not to mention that games were cheaper back then (new PS2 games in the UK were always £30 if not lower, £10 less than the average PS3 game). I'm sure they'll take all this into account.
