Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

I am also not sure what to expect about going forward to NRS like that, but best of lucks.
I guess anything over a C&D can be considered good, right?

here we go again, here are some changes, thanks uker, fixed a little the lighting so it matches the sprites but still looking more realistic, cause I don't really think we should match the same sking tone from the sprites

Much progress on Kang arq, congrats. Looks really good. Here's original sprites slowed down a bit, and upscaled for this project for you to compare body movement:

Man, that's awesome.
I mean it.
The hip's and shoulder's rotation is great. The range of motion in the arms is also looking great.
Also maybe it's just me but the pants look much better.
You should be proud.

Now I'd only:
- Make him not thrust his head forward when his right foot steps forward. If you keep the head where it is when the right foot steps backward, I think it will be perfect. His head should only move up and down.
- Also make his right hand keep the orientation it has when his right foot steps backward. In your version, when the right foot steps forward, his hand rotates around the wrist and gets hinda horizontal. See the GIF la_luna posted, and observe the hand's angle remains constant.
- Make the bouncing of the left foot so that it goes up to the same height on both jumps, preferably equalize them to the biggest one. Having one more pronounced than the other is kinda distracting, as if he was limping.

Again, mighty props, man.

Nice, that looks much better...

I notice he's putting too much force when he twists his left shoulder away from the camera...you can see his body snap, almost like he's losing his balance. Do you see that? I watched it while zoomed in so its easier to spot.

Kangs stance is probably the most difficult one to animate because of the fluid-style movement that is distributed throughout his whole body. The work you've done so far is incredible, i'm amazed that this is your first character animation.

There is also an error with his hair / sideburns, they're hanging down to his neck...you might need to zoom in to see it.

Sorry but I don't think getting it licensed is the best route to go... First of all I thought that this project was purely for a FAN created version of the game purely for the love of the game. Yes money I'm sure would be great for you all, but lets not get greedy, because if this DOES get shut down, then all the work thus far would be for nothing at all! Keeping it "fan art" protects you to an extent. Don't get me wrong you ALL you deserve to be paid for your skills, but THIS ( in MY opinion) isn't the venue. If you want money take donations, believe me, people who see the work can appreciate the efforts and WILL donate. What's the difference with kickstarter and just taking donations? You don't want to mess with Warner Bros they WILL shut you down, even if Netherealm Studios doesn't have a problem Warner Bros trumps them and they don't mess around with copyright. Just my 2 cents, I just really am looking forward to playing this game , it would be a real shame to have it shut down. :( Please just think about it....

and I still say all that knowing that I would kill to have this game ported to actual Jamma Arcade hardware... I would absolutely add this to my all in one machine knowing that it will never happen.

Now that you mention it, yes, there may be something.
arq_hawkin, is the shoulder moving relative to the body there?
Cause I don't think it should.

And BTW, I agree 100% with falconsfan.

The second money changes hands without permission we get shutdown. We can't take donations as far as I know. I wish I knew how similar fan art projects were shutdown. Is that even legal? I mean they probably could have ignored it and continued but if they took donations I think they would be shutdown. The reason I am doing this is progress will be terribly slow otherwise. I can see no other avenue.

Wow! Liu Kang is awesome! Guys, you're wizards! If you'll make MKII with such patience to details - you'll make my dreams come true! :)

Its exciting to see all the progress that have been posted so far. Very cool. Liu is looking great. One thing that looks off to me is that he looks like he is not bending his knees. Liu starts of with knees bent a bit, straightens his posture up halfway, then bent knees again.

Also, I think some of the spring in the pants can be taken away some. It looks like he's wearing silk. His pants is probably a heavier material, and wouldn't have as much bounce.

Is good to see you back gojira, about liu, i can make him look more bended knees and the cloth I really like it like that, I've always wanted to see a video game with this kind of cloth and hair animation, is a shame I had to drecease the hair motion, and now I guess i will have to decrease the pants animation aswell, if you guys wants so I will do it, not because I want but because the majority want it

the maximum would be playing it on ps3, xbox360, but also would be a pity the project be vetoed by NetherRealm studios, but it never hurts to try!!

I have Cage's new sprites working in mugen now, with the turnaround and fight stance.

The switch isn't too noticeable when the whole stage is moving, you have to look closely to notice the flip.

@bbyoshi147, The cloth is modeled, but if you want to try a cloth sim, I can set that up for you. Maybe the base mesh is good enough for that, but I'll need to add a body for collision.

@arq_hawkin, You are doing so good, very impressive, you learn fast!

That's it for tweaking I hope, trying to move along here...

I blended the abs, to stay with the sash more. The only problem I have that's making it look disjointed, is the hanging parts, because they are linked to the first bone of the spine, and the bone doesn't blend with the skin position.

The only way to fix that, which I can think of is to use a regular bone, not biped, and lock it to a vertex on the belt, instead of linking it to the skeleton.

@bbyoshi147, since you work with Mentalray a lot, I wonder if you have some ideas for getting rid of that flickering? Best I can do now, is increase the samples to 4/64, and re render any frames that come out too light.

NRS has been aware of this project since the very beginning.

@calactyte, I would agree with you, I think your playing with fire.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many, many ppl have contributed to this project in some way.
I doubt you could get everyone to sign contracts. This is better
left strictly as a fan game. even if that means it will take 2 more
years to finish it.

1) We will be shutdown and told to stop working on the project immediately.

^This sounds great if it all goes well, but I'm interested have these EVER happened to a fan made game that's using someone elses intellectual property:

This is a legit question, because I don't know. If someone can name a project that ended up well, that the company actually allowed progress and participated in some way.

Unfortunately, I know few of these:

Streets of Rage 4 and My Little Pony fighting game first come to mind. The latter was even voted for EVO or something like that, before it got cease and desist.

I am honestly emotionally attached to this project, even tho' I don't have skills to contribute much to it or be part of the team, I'd be the first to throw money at kickstarter if all goes well. Good luck guys.

Recently, a thread was made on Event Hubs about this community program of MK HD Remix, and people seemed very excited. That's where I first heard about the My Little Pony game (Fighting is Magic) that you're talking about.

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/apr/01/fan-made-mortal-kombat-1-high-definition/

Unfortunately, Hasbro's lawyers shut down that project, and the team continued anyway--but removed references to My Little Pony characters, and just made up their own. Unfortunately, I don't see that as a viable solution for a project like this.

That being said, if anyone has inside contacts to WB/NetherRealm, I would really appreciate you sending them to me.

From the days when I did events and stuff for MK Online, I can tell you that Midway was tough to deal with (once even threatening to confiscate cameras if they were used to record footage of MK games). I've never dealt with NRS/WB. Hopefully they will be easier-going.

As Tom said, the actual MK team is aware of this project. I don't think that gives them much clout with the legal team, but hey, it's a step in the right direction.

Terrordrome immediately comes to mind.

I also continue to hear that NRS is working on their own HD MK game.
I have no idea if its another attempt at an MK 1-3 HD Kollection,
or something completely different.

All I can offer you as piece of mind is simply...
MK MUGEN and its various projects have been
around for years. And while this one seem to
be amazing, its not the 1st MK fan game. And it
should be noted in the "old" days of MK Project
the sprites and sounds were ripped from actual games.

And not to sound negative or anything, but this is just
another MK MUGEN fan game. I fully agree that it is
amazing and leaps and bounds above anything like it
that came before it. I just fear that if it gets a professional
studio label slapped on it, that that will change the dynamic
of what it actually is.

Hi Tom,

But I have. I've kept track of every change and every contribution and reached out to everyone. All have signed contracts or have agreed to sign them. It is really a much smaller pool of talent than you probably think it is. I've even reached out to those who on contributed for short time and then disappeared. Jarvis comes to mind and he has already signed on.

I want to first say, I'm not arguing with you. You seem to have an inside track on these things and I respect that. I wonder why NRS won't respond to me. Very strange. Even just to say, "shh, we will look the other way so you can complete this project but please don't try and sell it." I mean, it would be nice for them to warn us directly before lawyers get involved.
