Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

Hey, despite the negative vibes going on here I have to say I appreciate everyone's attempts at doing these mock-ups. Both catalyte's and smoke tetsu's attempts are very nicely done. I think Justin Slaughter's ideas are probably the best we've seen so far, and will only improve once he uses catalyte's font. Someone else might come up with something even better.

Smoke Tetsu even if the vast majority of your stuff isn't used, I think your "win dot" is awesome (the original one was even better than the latest, low-contrast one). I'm sure everyone appreciates your effort even if that doesn't always come across in the comments.

I hope everyone keeps up the fantastic work regardless of whether it's considered the "best" or not.

But the win dot wasn't mine... that was Cal's.. so no win for me there either. That's just how his win dots look next to my bars.

I just lowered the contrast on my bar... brushed out some of the shine again and pasted it onto the screenshot.

I'm trying out different faceplate sizes. In his profile pic, its looks pretty huge. In some of the behind the scenes images, it looks a good bit smaller. Personally, I like the bigger size:

Nice... no AMAZING stuff MG... I do think the plate looks too stoney though... it should probably look more like chrome\steel\metal.

smoke.tetsu: Man, if you could put your negative attitude and sound more friendly and humble your material could be seen on different eyes. Please take that into consideration next time you bring some suggestion/idea to the table. I have noticed most people would not give a damm no matter how good it might be if you act like this. I mean, you wont get a md warning because you're not breaking any rule, but your ideas might be rejected without a second thought.

With that being said, I would like to request a second mock up, this time, could you please edit the contrast and everything to your personal taste? Please show us what you think would be best for the project and (if possible) don't make any comments, so we all can see your proposition. I would like Justin to do the same once he have the fonts right.

I think we all should do the best within ourselves to leave our differences aside when making choices and vote for what we think is best for the project. Let's say, maybe at the end Cal's version is the best one of all but we wouldn't be able to tell unless we have something to compare it with.

Thank you sir! amazing work! and I agree, at least for the portrait the larger plate looks best, I think I like the eyesocket on the small one better though, but that probably doesn't matter. If you are unable to get that chrome effect I should be able to give it a shot via photoshop. Can you disable the beveled/embossed effect from the plate itself? So it's just flat on his face?

Again, awesome work man.

@Carz My personal tastes where for it to be shiny. You've already seen it... but basically more like this..

@CARZ: I'm sorry if I come across negative but I am feeling very discouraged at this point. I did remove most of the negative comments from my previous posts if it helps any. Probably too late at this point... oh, sorry.. negative.. can't win for losing!

Also Gojira, maybe you could make the bottom 'very slightly' more rounded and brought in a little closer to his nose? This isn't perfect, just to give you an idea what I mean...

Smoke I don't know how this has become about fairness. It's all opinion really. I agree with CARZ when you make your argument so forcefully it unfortunately (over the internet) comes off like frustration, anger and probably even a little ungrateful. I've always from the very beginning respected your opinion so you don't need to get upset with me. In general I don't think anyone wants this to become about you versus me. The best way to describe how you are perceived sometimes (at least to me) is adversarial.

At this point you've opened the discussion and I'm learning that most people actually agree with you that the life bars can be improved. So as much as I'd like to keep them the way they are, you have in fact fought for and defended your idea. So you've won in that sense. I don't like your execution and if I'm going to make the change, I'd prefer we go in the direction that Justin is headed. You can't equate hard work on something as necessarily making it better. I realize you've spent a few hours on your version and perhaps, Justin spent a few minutes on his. That doesn't change the fact that his version to me looks better for the reasons I've already stated. Effort does not = Better. That first guard that a made almost a year ago took me like 26 hours to create. The new guard I created took about 8 hours to create and looks 10 times better. Also how can public opinion be unfair? I just don't understand that thinking at all.

Also in looking at your latest version you've desaturated everything I guess in response to my contrast comment. But this is what I mean about subtlety. It looks like you almost "blindly" applied desaturation to the entire bar. Now "blindly" doesn't mean I'm taking a jab at you and calling you blind. In the art world it means you've applied the effect to the whole without take into consideration the parts. This did not improve your life bar. Now look at Justin's version. His shadows aren't as dark, thus my contrast comment. His life bar isn't shiny so it doesn't look (I know you hate the word cheap) plastic-like. Even then letters have a more subtle drop down though I still maintain that the gold effect in your letters probably looks a little better.

Too much effort for too little return (to do a full thing creating another full name). Especially for something that's been so (unfairly I would say) panned that anyone elses work is held up higher. Maybe it's my fault.. I turned everyone against it. Seems the more I tried to accomodate everyone's opinion the less people liked it. The more you compromise.. the more nobody gets what they want.

But here's one last ditch effort.. with "less contrast" and a tad less shine as well (almost to the point of severely compromising the design)... so behold what will never be... BTW even with more contrast I highly disagree with Cal that it looks "hand drawn". If anything I think it looks more like CG... I did do most of the fine tuning by hand though.. *shrugs*

lasteffort.jpg

Just to note the colors probably wouldn't have been final and doing it in separate files instead of all in one would help. Yeah I realize the position on the second player is incorrect.. again too much effort at this point for too little return. I already know certain people here don't like it.. no need to rub it in.

If Justin wants to do a mockup it's his responsibility.

Thanks, I guess... but I never said it was. No "reality check" is needed. I am also not ungrateful as you seem to imply. A tad overenthusiastic & opinionated perhaps but not ungrateful. It's not like.. any contribution whatsoever and I would have claimed the entire thing as my own. Otherwise I would have already for the edits I did to the palace guard. Oh no, I'm going to jinx it! ;)

Okay... now you're gonna hate me but I don't like your life bar...!!! xD

If I might offer some criticism, I think the yellow border is too tight, and the letters get mixed with the border... also, somehow it does look unprofesional, I don't know exactly why. Mmm, too much black shadow in the borders... the green color looks nice tho, and I also like the winning icon.

Could you edit Justin's version for us to compare?

Aclaratory edit: This post is for smoke-tetsu.

In all fairness the letters touched the border on the original and Cal's remake too... in the original there was less separation between the letters and the border since it was all solid colored... and the letters did overlap the border some. I tried to make the energy bar and letters have more depth to it with the shadowing so it wont be perceived as too blurry. It was in response to Cal saying that the bars in the canned HD remix had more depth to them. I'd say more but I've been told to cut down on this so.. :)

But I second, third, fourth guessed myself to death at this point. :)

I was thinking Justin should make his own mockup. But I did try to edit one up anyway as per request... in the name of fairness and impartiality..

I have to admit I do like his border. I hand it off to him as popular opinion favors his work. No hard feelings whatsoever to Justin. *bows*

I have given this a lot of thought, and I think it's obvious the life bar subject is far from over. Justin's version does look super-rush and I see yet another problem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4AEQisRX1Y

The life bar should take this scene into account; aesthetically, in the original MK1, the font is used in all circumstances, that means:
- Round 1/2/3 Fight
- Finish Him/Her...!
- Scorpion/Whatever Wins
- Flawless Victory
- Time Bonus
- Fatality

All those letters should be done taking into consideration a much needed armony and flexibility, so when you achieve Flawless Victory and do a Fatality, and the whole screen gets full of letters, it wont look bad (saturated) and it will still look true to the original.

Just because of that, I'm starting to like Cal's version a lot more than the other two versions, even when I think it should be improved a little bit more, it still should be used as the base in my opinion. I don't know, I would make the yellow borders bigger, add some more shadow on the inside, perhaps giving some texture to the yellow border and a border to the letters maybe. Eitherway, all attempts should take into consideration ALL SCENARIOS in which the letters are being used and keep some consistency.

@smoke-tetsu: Congratulations for your new attitude, perhaps now you might realize some people here have received various pages of critiques and have been forced to go over and over to review their works, if you want to contribute to the project, you probably still have the chance, the end of the world is not quite here yet see? :)

Gojira, great progress on Kano. The only thing that sticks out, like calactyte said, are his pants aroung crotch area.
They should definitely be lower and more baggy from the knees up:

Here are some more sprites that show this area of Kanos pants (I resized them to dimensions used in this remake)

@CARZ: Well for the time being my edits are still included in the palace guard for example (as well as suggestions I made earlier on). So yeah, the world is not quite over... and I'm sort of glad that what I said caused some examination of the UI whether it truly goes well with an HD remake and whether it can be improved.

Mmm okay, sorry then... language barrier probably (as English is not my native language). It was nice talking to you, and thanks for the mock ups, they were really useful for us all I'm sure.

OK, one last thing though... I'm not doing any further life-bar edits particularly to the one I had been editing all along unless it's really desired and someone can give me a concise (preferably bulleted or numbered) and judgement free list of things to change. Then I may consider it. :)

Until then I hand the floor back over to Cal, or Justin.
