Thanks for the critique guys, I'll make some changes.

I have two lights in front and to the sides actually, If I make them too strong the GI becomes washed out and looks like a solid white mass...
 
You can mix standard max lights with GI lights to get the desired effect though it slows down render time. Mess around with the standard max spotlight and you'll see it allows you to "paint" with the light.

I don't know what GI lights are but I'm pretty sure he meant "gi" as in the clothing.

there's a really easy way to get gi with just one vray light setted to dome

It may be the angle but it looks much better than your render of ending 1.

That looks great, I just would add a stronger light on the left side of his face an on his right fist, can you make that last one just to see
 
Looks great but the face lacks texture. No skin pores, it looks a bit painted. That is one of the things MrMos3s retains in his portraits.
 
Mrmos3s tomorrow I will upload both ending pics, do you think you can work on them so we can have both pics done for the next week
 
uKER, looks fantastic!

Maybe add some high lights from the left to his face and hand, and try to simulate the shading of the hut.
