Due to Smoke and Sub-Zero being teamed up in MK9, I hope they incorporate something in the plot of them trying to convince Noob to re-join the Lin Kuei. That, or something along the lines of Scorpion relentlessly perusing him after learning of his reincarnation after slaying him.
Some new Oni similar Moloch and Drahmin would be nice as well.

Ed Boon didn't confirm that all of the stuff in MK4 wasn't completely not happening, though, so some MK4 characters are still very possible.
Actually, Ed Boon said that the story was going to be a mix between a continuation from MK9 and a new original story.
Some of those character from MK4 are still possible.
Not everything in MK4 has been erased, but some of it has.
I expect a mix of a few familiar characters with brand new characters.

Shinnok may very well not be the boss. Perhaps he's not done with the whole puppet master thing. He may be controlling the events of this game as well. Which I would be perfectly fine with. Anything to make Shinnok seem more crucial to the overall plot. He was severely underused in the originals. Reduced to a wimpy boss fight, which is insane considering he is a fallen God.

I've said this once and I'll say it again, going by the MK9 story mode, nothing has changed other than Shao Kahn not being the victor during Armageddon and a couple of heroes dying. Not even Armageddon has been averted, strictly speaking. If they wish to do something brand new, unless they explain logically why the events of MK4 onwards doesn't happen anymore, it would be nothing more than a lazy cop-out. If NRS wishes to distinguish itself from other fighting game developers by providing a story mode, they got to take it seriously. I for one, wouldn't be interested much in the future games hereon if they go the lazy route. I would much rather prefer post MK3 characters returning in new/developed iterations, most of them have got potential to be as good, even better that the characters pre-MK3, believe it not. I wouldn't mind a couple of brand new characters, but not at the cost of the post MK3 ones.
I would say yes to Sektor, cause he would be leading the Lin Kuei now. He would possibly help Shinnok in taking over Earthrealm.

I doubt that many characters will be brought back to life, most are going to be replaced by completely new ones.

Yea, I guess besides Liu Kang and maybe one of the Sub-Zero's, we won't be seeng that many return. Then again Ed Boon did mention something along the lines of dead characters not confirmed to stay dead in twitter, so we may see a few more.

Raiden is the undefeated champion of mortal kombat. after the earthrealm invasion he lost faith in mortal's ability to do what is necessary in the face of total annihilation. he will test those that prove worthy in mortal kombat, only if he is defeated will his faith in humanity be restored. duuuuuurrrrrr fanfic!!!

I agree. He has been conniving game after game. Its time he gets what's coming to him. I like him but he needs to go. Still would like him playable in mkx dont see why he wouldn't be. Also he needs a new garb. He's been wearing the same attire since MKDA

I would definitely like to see
1. Scorpion and Sub-Zero- An alliance just to break up the monotony of them being bitter rivals, especially in both their endings it was revealed Quan Chi was the true enemy.
2. Sektor & Cyrax- I would like to see how details of their separation come about or will they remain together. As of MK9 they are still a team in Story Mode. (excluding the ladder endings)
3. Nightwolf- I just want him back because he was pretty badass in the game he was Raiden's Right Hand man. He can easily be brought back since he worked so closely with God's and Spiritual stuff.

Ok so I think.. After MK2011...
Part 1.)
Raiden, while he was able to trick/defeat Shao Khan, did so at a great price. Pretty much everybody was killed and earth realm did manage to get invaded.. even if it was brief. I think the Gods look down upon Raiden and strip him of his powers and replace him with Lui Kang as the new God and protector of Earth Realm.
Raiden becomes mortal.
Lui Kang's first order of business is to bring about peace to all realms, and in his mind the only way to do that is to annihilate all those he deems "evil". Starting with Quan Chi. Lui Kang finds and kills Quan Chi.
Shang Tsung along with the other souls trapped in the Nether Realm under Quan's control are freed. Shang out of pure hatred and vengeance find's Quan's spirit and consumes it.. creating a Hybrid character Shang Chi or Quan Tsung or whatever..
Shinnok needed Quan's sorcerer ability to return from the Nether Realm. So he contacts "Shang Chi", but he refuses to help.. "Shang Chi" realizing his own powers now that he is uber powerful, wants to become ruler of the Nether Realm and invade Earth Realm once and for all.
Shinnok does the unthinkable and gets in Contact with Lui Kang.. tells him of the new "Shang Chi" character and his plans and that Kang will need help. Shinnok tries to convince Kang he will need the help of another God to defeat "Shang Chi" and his all powerful Nether Realm army. Lui reluctantly and cautiously agrees as he feels Shinnok would be able to do what Raiden never could. Shinnok and Kang become the new DA.
Everybody hears about the new deadly alliance and simultaneously shit's theirs pants.. almost in unison.
Sub-Zero goes looking for Scorpion to find out what he knows of everything that's been going on in the Nether Realm and to offer a truce so that they may combine their forces in defeating these new massive threats. Sub-Zero points out that Scorpion was able to capture Shinnok and return him to the Nether Realm many moons ago. Scorpion agrees to join Sub-Zero but... first beats the piss out of him just cause he hates guy's named Sub-Zero and pretty much like everyone else has lost track of which one this is but knows one of them is in need of a severe ass whoopin'.
Subby and Scorp become the new Double Dragon team.. High Five's and cheesy one liner's follow after every fight.
Everybody searches out Raiden in search of guidance and what to do. They find him homeless behind a Walmart. Raiden explains his situation and that he is virtually useless now. However he does know of someone who still considers him a friend someone that may be able to help....
Raiden and the Earth Realm warriors search out and find Fujin. However Fujin tells Raiden he can not give him back his powers as he is forbidden by the Elder Gods and would suffer a similar fate if he were to do so... but tells him of another who may be able to restore some of his abilities.. someone who would be powerful enough and has the ability to copy and learn the moves of his combatants... Fujin tells him where to find Shujinko. Fujin also tell the warriors that he will join there cause and take up Raiden's position in his absence.
Raiden goes off to find Shujinko and seek his help.
