How will story mode play?

They have those filler fights for the casual fans who don't want to sit through cutscenes all day. Casual fans have ADD like a motherphucker. It sounds stupid right? Well it's totally understandable.

I could give a rat's ass about Guilty Gear's story. But I need to play through the story mode if I want to unlock all of the music tracks in the game. I'd be pissed if I had to do it by sitting through a story I cared nothing for (not everyone finds MK's story as interesting as you and I) and barely had any fights to break up the pace.

Yeah but the point is, if there are no chapters (or chapters are handled differently), they can jump straight from one non-filler fight to the next non-filler fight. Everybody wins.

Please elaborate. I don't understand what you mean by no chapters.

The way MK9 was divided, characters got "chapters," where they would get 3-5 (or whatever) battles in a row and win all of them. This system has some glaring drawbacks. Some characters, like Jax, didn't have enough quality story to warrant having that many fights. So while the story might have been better served by Scorpion coming back during MK2 to kick some butt, or Liu Kang/Johnn/Sonya in MK3, they couldn't, because their chapters had already ended and Jax "needed fights" that took valuable production time.

MK9 did make two exceptions, for Liu Kang and Sub-Zero, but those were very notable. A looser story structure would give the writers a lot more freedom to give characters the story space they deserve, without being forced to accommodate the chapters. Start the game with three fights of Kano's, then 5 years later give us two more fights of Kano's, then ten years later give us two more. And these last two aren't even in a row!

Hmm,
I feel like MKX will have the same story type as Injustice, MK'11, and MKvDC. Entertaining cutscenes with every character having 3-5 fights while the semi-main has one or two exclusive extra fights,
But it would be pretty epic to have some choices. One day I hope to have a story as iconic as the MKD konquest again.

I think I see what you mean. Don't make every character their battles in a row. Allows for the scenes to feel less forced.

Yup! And if they really can't come up with a way to tie someone into the story, I'd rather they didn't, and focused on the characters that are obviously relevant. Did Sonya really need to fight Raiden? Really? Not every remotely-Good aligned character absolutely positively must be POV.

I think NRS like the story mode that we had since 2008. It's the story mode that they wanted to do for a long time. If you look back during the old news for MKDA when it was under the title of "MK5", I remember Ed Boon saying that MK5 would have a more story driven story that it makes you feel like that you're watching a movie. I remember hearing about that during the early 2000's and we never got it. With the time and money they have now, they can give characters more depth and development.

I hope to have more character development for the story mode this time. In MK9, most of them had none. Ermac, Baraka and Reptile had no real personality to them and they were just punching bags. Reptile in MK9's story mode was totally wasted since he never spoke at all.

So according to the latest interview, story mode has "little quick time events that can change your path".

So maybe I kind of get my wish?

Here is my idea for Story mode IF Liu kang will be in the game
1st off I am not a Liu Kang fan at all, he just isn't interesting to me but if he was to show a darker side im sure he would be alittle more interesting. So if he in the game i would love to have this twist. He either side with evil or rather be of a neutral character. Have him manipulated or choose to side with Shinnok (with anger towards Raiden bc of how things ended with them in MK) and be his champion, but we don't know about it until the end.

In the Final battle against Shinnok, he is defeated and it breaks to a cutscene. In the midst of their celebration Liu Kang walks out from the Shadows clapping congratulating them for killing Shinnok for him as it was his overall agenda. He reveals that Shinnok he had been behind some of the "unexplained" events while they where busy with other events. LK and the Heroes fight all while LK explains his actions to rid the world of the evil but at his own terms. Finally ending with the Heroes beating him. LK dies but is brought back and honored for who he was and his ultimate goal.

I dont want LK to be the Main Big Bad but a Surprise Boss character. This killing him off and making me HAPPY!!!!

Just throwing this out, but the main flaw with the "Split up the Fighters" thing is that the story also served as a jumping off point for players. Getting 4 fights in a row made it easy to learn the new characters, as basically every round got harder (for the most part). I might never have given Johnny or Striker a legit shot in MK 9 without story mode, and they ended up being two of my favorites to play as. Meanwhile I never got used to playing as Mileena, Baraka, or Reptile cause I had little training with them.
