How does one remain patient?

So, a few months back I was being a fanboy and picked up Marvel vs Capcom 3 because honestly? I'm a comic book junkie and a little addicted to Deadpool. (This sounds off topic but it leads somewhere relevant, I promise.) This may have started my love for fighting games. After that I picked up SSF4, and then more recently MK9. Now, in every one of these games I find out that you spend most of your time in the training lab. My problem is this. In the other games, and now MK9, I lose my patience quickly when moving from the training lab to the game. I try to perform the same combos I had just practiced, but either I fail to start them or I am literally moving my joystick waaay too much in the heat of battle for anything to register.

My questions are, do you have the same training-to-action problem? And if yes, how do you remain patient? Is it that I'm new to this style of game? Do all new players have this issue?

Thanks for any responses you may have, I appreciate anything.

((Thanks for the move admin.))

What's happening is this...

you learn a combo, you are really focusing on the aspects of this combo. once you believe you have it down, You think you're ready to face a real opponent

what you don't know is that you trained to execute your combos under absolutely no pressure, and now you have to execute them while thinking about other things, your not use to this new environment and you'll tend to do your moves at the wrong times because your opponent is doing things your not use to dealing with and it's throwing off your rhythm. and sometimes You respond to late to your hit confirm because your opponent blocked your hits before but this time they didn't and you were expecting the block again.

Also learning combos doesn't teach you when to use them, how to use them, why you use them, and how to mix them up so you keep your opponent guessing.

all you really need now to be honest is to play under pressure, and practice getting your combos off when you finally drill it into yourself enough that when you see a specific scenario that gaurantees your combo opens up, you take it and do it by muscle memory. repeat and play so much that you don't even have to think about combos, they just come out and punish what they are suppose to punish automatically, so all you have to think about is your opponent's thought process and decisions.

So in short...

KEEP PRACTICING AGAINST LIVE OPPONENTS IF YOU ARE DOING YOUR COMBOS FINE IN TRAINING MODE.

Also fresh out of training mode creates bad habits when you go online RIGHT after. Because you'll tend to want to land those combos you just learned so you end up playing "your character" when you should be "playing your opponent"

I have a similar problem in ssf4, its hard enough to do a lot of damaging combos in the training room, sometimes it felt impossible to attempt online. As for mk9, I tend to drop the last few consecutive hits on Shang Tsungs combos. I can definitely relate to your situation man, you're not alone. :(

@Critical-Limit

Thank you for this, the deep explanation is greatly appreciated. I will think about this while playing.

No problem man, if you want you can send me a visitor message anytime with a question i'll do my best to answer. Then again making a thread could help other people, who have too much pride to ask, or don't think about it.

Critical-Limit hit the nail on the head. What helps me is after I get a combo down, I turn the Fight AI on in Training mode and try to see where I can actually integrate it with a live opponent without having to worry too much about health loss or round times.
