do the backgrounds suck?

im actually shocked that people are defending that market stage. its a boring design that makes outworld look just like any normal place in earth realm. outworld has always had a unique presence about it that makes it stand apart from earth realm even in daylight past stages have had warm colors while still having that other worldly presence of outworld.

im not getting that presence at all with the market stage in fact if it wasnt called 'outworld market' you wouldnt even know it was in outworld :( (besides the tiger), very plain and boring, the peoples clothing is even plain and boring and the people look bored out their minds. even the tiger thing is yawning and falling asleep coz the stage is that boring.

sorry for wanting better but i believe once a bar is set one should always aim higher and that market stage is like 10 steps backwards.

There are giant beasts and some big spikey contraption things that you usually don't find in earthrealm and since it takes place in a desert what did you expect people to dress like to keep them cool also its a freakin Market you know one of the most mind numbing places to be in so why would you expect people to be surprised or alert

Outworld is not just a cesspit of corpses and with beautiful scenery here and there. It's a world where people live.

In my opinion, the market place is a good stage because when you think outworld, you think "EVIL," but it kind of shows that the world is not so black and white. Not everyone in outworld is an abomination. In fact, they're not so different to the people of earthrealm. It gives it sort of a relatability - helps us feel empathy for the other side.

Also, it strays away from naive concepts of good vs evil. We don't just want outworld to be destroyed because there is innocent people there.

In my book, that's a good thing. It makes the series less shallow.

I thought Shang Tsung's garden was located in Earthrealm....

Anyway. I would most certainly know that the market was located in Outworld. It had the same look and feel as Kahn's arena in MK9. You've got this crazy looking tiger and other weird non-earthly things in the background. Also, what are you expecting the people in the background to do? They're going about their daily lives and I'm sure it's hot as hell where they are... I mean, what's the problem? Should they all be jumping around and sh** just because they aren't from Earthrealm? lol

I had always imagined the Outworld like a hellish limbo.
I never liked the idea that people lived there going about their lives as if nothing.

I imagined Shao Kahn and the Tarkatan as vicious creatures whose only purpose was to invade other realms.
I would have never wanted to imagine Baraka having a home and buying his groceries in the Outworld Market, thank you very much.

Do you think all of that is more believable?

Last time I checked, every single culture that made it to the Iron Age had markets.

exactly its a mind numbing boring place. they need to come up with better interesting backgrounds, or at least design a better market something like the troll market in hellboy 2 would fit much better.

and oh i dunno maybe they should be surprised or alert at the 2 guys only a few feet away from them that are shooting lighting from their hands and disappearing through the floor and beating each up into a bloody mess.

This is Outworld 2 guys fighting each other is common hell they should only be a little surprised since the fighting isn't happening on a Tuesday

Dude, we've only seen two three stages so far. Relax. They aren't going to show us the best ones to start with.

Yeah, you've raised a good point here. It takes away from a villain's stature if we're given reasons to imagine that they go about their daily lives with all the same banality that we do. Ha, actually there you go, that must be the new finishing move that Boon hinted about: BANALITY! :P

But back to the Outworld market. It doesn't take me out of the fantasy too much to see that Outworld has trade and a semblance of industry. In LOTR, Saruman represents the corrupting folly of human industry, so it's not unheard of in fantasy to have sorcerous villains with an affinity for technology.

I imagine Shao Khan as a ruthless, despotic shogun. If he even needs to eat (which is debatable since we don't know what sort of being he is, plus it's hard to imagine him taking a casual dump on his skull-encrusted toilet reading the Outworld Times), I don't imagine he'd be picking up his weekly groceries at the market. His army has access to portals. They've pillaged countless civilisations to bring their lord and master tribute. Whether that be food or (as we see in his MK9 win pose) scantily clad sex slaves.

You know with this criticsism with the Outworld Market I'm surprised no one said anything about the Koliseum since it looks like a normal arena, with all of yall expectation I'm surprised no one complained about the lack of magma or purple skies

Well you're always welcome to play a different stage, that is why there is more than one.
And the majority of people I've seen discuss it, actually like the stage. So saying this is 10 steps backward is hard to agree with

Have you not played Deception?
It shows that Outworld is not complete chaos.

And Kahn is obviously not the death to all beings overlord that most of you seem to think he is. It's evident in MKII, he has an entire arena filled with people cheering and having a great time. He isn't Onaga, who just wants to pretty much consume everything that exists.

Nobody imagine Sonya Blade go to water closet or cooking, but she's a human and don't have the choice.
Baraka is a soldier in outworld army, he doesn't need to have a home or go to market.

Remember MKD Konquest mode and the village of Li Mei, it seems pretty normal, no ?

Outworld is an entire realm, it's not like some small isolated area...who says there can't be different races, cultures, societies, etc...without Shao Kahn ruling who knows what life would be like there.

Outworld was at it's best in MK 2 where it seemed very dangerous. But then the dark outworld vibe was raped by Li mei and her story and Deception destroyed what was left. So the Market isn't that bad today.

I love the market stage, I always have liked those kinds of settings in games, and in my opinion it hella fits the MK universe.
