While I agree to some extent with what your saying.. it still holds true about the masses.. no not everything turns out to be gold or a winner as in the case of Modok in MvC3 (still no one gives a s**t about him, lol). But it's the risk and reward thing you have to do. Just look at "the avenger's".. Honestly before Iron Man came out or any of those movies I personally was not a huge fan of any one of those specific character's... and I can tell you that most of my friends or colleagues didn't know the first thing about any of them or really have any interest, and now look at what they've become. It's like everybody is in love with the avengers and they've got merchandise out the ying yang.. The video game industry is becoming more and more mainstream.. and like Hollywood it only makes sense to 'chance' certain character's in order to peak interests and start new franchises.. all of the "Art's" Music/Movies/Media sort of intertwine.. so it wouldn't surprise me that if all of a sudden a certain hero starts to pick up popularity and next thing you know there's a movie coming out, a lunch box, t-shirt etc.,.. Granted, no Nether realm isn't going to single handedly do it but there influence would be felt.. It is a fact that MOST people do not read comics, however MOST of them do go to the movies.. Even when great comics or story's are written the majority of people don't hear about it... until it comes out in some form of mainstream media.. then you get the right company or the right actors or enough money.. and more likely then not it becomes a hit. The reality is that most of these character's already have great stories to them.. and they would make great character's either in games or movies.. it's just no one wants to drop the money on them unless they know they'll be successful...
What generally happens, or could, is that a video game introduces a lesser known character into a "popular" game.. the non comic or majority crowds are intrigued or interested in said new character and it drives sales of there current merchandise ie: books/comics/other media... some writer or director takes note of increasing sales/interest in "new" character.. then if we're lucky since the majority of the source material is probably already been written for the character over the years.. a script gets penned, a good actor/actors who haven't done $**t in a while and a director takes a chance.. and as long as they don't screw with the source material to much or "Hollywood-ize" the script...we get movies, t-shirt, video games, books, etc., etc, and a new franchise is born.. obviously this wasn't an exact example of how this happens just one scenario/explanation..
Not that I give a crap about all the merchandise that can be made from it.. I'm just tired of seeing the same recycled characters over and over.. I would love to see some that have never really been in this kind of media before. Swamp Thing, for example, while I do like him is by no means in my top tier of favorite character's but hearing all the characters that are already in the game I feel he would be such a perfect addition.. He would be completely unique in his looks, fighting style, super etc., He has a really sad and awesome backstory.. and it would stretch the DC license a little rather then bunching it up in the back of Batman's shorts..
