DiveKick!!!

This is actually a real game? Thought it was just a joke! Where have I been in the world of competitive e-sports?

It was initially a real game made after someone made a joke, I wouldn't say it was ever a joke, but it was at first a fun game made for fun between friends, and then Keits ran it at a few tournaments last year. He eventually Kickstartered it to make it into a real game, and then it got pulled after it was purchased by someone.

Fast forward to this year, and his employer Iron Galaxy was revealed as the company behind it and they are making it into a real shipped product. It's still a fun game, but completely redone and will be released on PS3, Vita and PC this summer. (PC users goto www.greenlightdivekick.com to help it get on Steam)

The way I describe it is that it takes the final moment in a fighting game when the two player's lives are both down to a final hit, and the next hit wins. But instead of worrying about six buttons and a stick, all you have is Dive and Kick. So it's super accessible but also deeply complex when you start working in the character differences.

Are the characters actually different? I thought both Dive and Kick both just...dived then kicked?

You are thinking of the early game, where it was Dive and Kick and two other hidden characters.

NOW there are a total of 12 characters, not sure if there are any more or if it's just these 12 in the final list. Each have their own unique angles, speeds, hit box sizes, and special moves (one ground and one in the air, and usable with a built super "shoe" meter). A few other characters have special abilities beyond the special attacks, like MarkMan's Just Frame kick or how The Baz's feet don't do anything but the lightning line he "shits" does his damage.

Been bad at putting this up, but DiveKick comes out for PC/PS3/Vita for $10 on August 20th.

Both PS3/Vita versions can play against each other and cost only $10 total for BOTH. Buy it once get it for both systems. Also if you have PS+ it's discounted as well on launch week to ~$8. Also for those 5 of us with 3G Vitas, it works over 3G as well.

Those getting it for PC, there is a Steam group I setup to find others who are playing it: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/divekickers

Also check out the blog for random updates http://divekickers.com and Twitter account I created https://twitter.com/divekickers
