Back to the Kombat- I just realized something.

I just realized that the current series of MK games is possibly taking it's inspiration from the Back to the Future franchise, and the fact that Ed Boon mentioned BTTF in press interview for both MKX and MK9 really got me thinking. The storylines are comparable.

Bare with me and prepare to get annoyed----------------------------

In MK:

We open in MK9 with Armageddon and everybody is dead, Raiden sends a message back in time to himself and alters the past, as a result of this the timeline skews off into an alternate where majority of the heroes are dead. The next game opens 25 years in the future, Shao Kahn is no more and Outworld has a benevolent new leader, Scorpion is himan again, all while Earthrealm hasn't been threatened since the Netherrealm War.

...until Kano steals the amulet, the amulet winds up with Mileena who uses it as a weapon, eventually Mileena is killed and the amulet is stolen by D'vorah, D'vorah delivers the amulet to Quan Chi right before Hanzo Hasashi punches his clock, Shinnok is released from the amulet and continues his war with the revenants of the fallen heroes in tow, Shinnok immediately goes to corrupt the jinsei, which all results in Raiden becoming corrupted by dark magic and the fallen remaining as vengeful revenants....the future now looks much, much darker.

Now BTTF:

In the first movie we open with a focus on Marty McFly, a down on his luck high school loser with a less than ideal homelife who only has 3 things going for him- A steady girlfriend, some mad guitar skills and a budding friendship with an eccentric scientist.

Said eccentric scientist, Dr. Emmett Brown, involves Marty in one of his latest experiments- time travel. However, Doc Brown is gunned down before Marty's very eyes, Marty flees in the DeLorean and as a result of the chase, the flux capacitor is activated and Marty is sent by accident to 1955, where he unwittingly changes the timeline that affects his life. When he returns to 1985, he finds a much brighter future, Doc survived the shooting, his dad is a famous author who hires Biff to wax his car and he even has the truck he yearned for at the start of the movie. The future seems much brighter. Doc then arrives, with the DeLorean, and warns Marty and his girlfriend about their son.

(Now here's where the comparisons to MK come in to play)

They go to 2015, where they successfully intervene in the very event that lands Marty's son behind bars. However, Marty buys a book of sports statistics and intends to "win a few bets", Doc puts his foot down, takes the almanac away and tosses it in the garbage. As they walk away, Old Biff Tannen walks out from behind a screen door and pulls the almanac out of the trash, he was eavesdropping in on the argument. From there, Biff precedes to steal the time machine and he uses it to travel back to 1955 where he hands the book to his younger self. As a result, Marty, Doc and Jennifer return to the Alternate 1985, a dark and grim new reality wrought by a corrupt and powerful Biff.

You guys see where I'm coming from? Though absolutely not ripping off BBTF, the current MK franchise does seem to be heavily influenced by the BTTF franchise. So much so that I can almost guarantee you guys that MK11 is going to involve yet more time altering shenanigans, though it definately wouldn't be Raiden doing the meddling.

But in all seriousness, the Back to the Future influence in MK9 and MKX is so obvious. I can't believe most here haven't caught on to this yet. BTTF2 is an obviously huge influence on the current MKs with the timeline altering and it's dystopian results.

Once history is changed then a new timeline is create. I think the old timeline is now long gone since I remember Raiden mentioning that Shao Kahn end up destroying everything in the universe after he becomes the ultimate winner of Armageddon. I don't think it's like DBZ where you can use a device to travel to different timelines.

Kitana's ladder ending implies the old timeline still exists, but we'll have to wait to see if that's canon or not. (It's possible ghost-Jade is showing her false images, too, in order to manipulate her.)

As for the OP, I like the theory that Shinnok also was able to send a premonition back in time to better prepare for his invasion -- hence Quan Chi's stronger presence in the trilogy events and ability to be one step ahead of Shao Kahn in a way he never was in the original timeline. If that's the case, Shinnok was already the Biff of the equation.

I caught on the second I played MK9's story. It also made me think about Terminator also. I thought it was a very, very clever way to reboot the series without scrapping the old timeline.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!!!
I'm more annoyed at the fact that people are bringing this up again, even though I brought this up during 2014, and this should have been an "I told you so" moment for me, to all the people who kept arguing this with me back then.
I posted about this very same thing and I caught onto this WAAAAAAAAAAAY back in E3 2014, since I'm a huge Back To The Future fanatic, collector and nerd of all things Back To The Future and DeLorean related, but people kept f***ing arguing and debating with me back and forth back then that MK9 and MKX don't have influence from BTTF, when they clearly do.

Ed Boon even made 2 references to MK9 / MKX and Back To The Future, but apparently people are oblivious as hell to such things, or they choose to be ignorant on purpose.
(Btw, I'm not specifically calling YOU out on this the_pathfinder, just speaking generally.)

But then I'm the asshole for pointing such things out.........

E3 2014 TRMK interview with Ed Boon said:
TRMK: What can you tell us about the storyline at this point?

Ed Boon: The timeline for Mortal Kombat itself skews, it does a Back to the Future thing. This story is not just this linear continuation of the story.

Hmm........ I wonder where this could have come from?

(1:00 mark of the video below)

2nd interview of Gamecom 2014 where Boon mentions an "alternate reality" in MK9 / MKX.

The Kombat Tether:
Given that this game begins shortly after the events of MK9 and spans about 25 years, without revealing too much, is it safe to say we could see events from MK4, Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon reimagined?

Ed Boon:
There might be similarities but we are certainly not going to just follow that story because when you think about it, this is kind of like an alternate reality and anybody who looked at MK9 will know we kinda retold the MK story but events had changed, people had died and so you're probably not just going to see MK4 through to MK8 played out you know.

That's what I believe in too. Shinnok in the original timeline didn't die since he send out a clone to fight in the battle for Armageddon. In MKX, Shinnok could have been like "You're not the only one who saw the future Raiden. I saw everything myself when myself from another timeline send me visions of the future". It can explain why the NR invasion happen sooner then later in the new timeline. In the old timeline, MK4 mention it been 10 years since the events of Sub-Zero: Mythologies and SZM takes place two years before MK1 (Scorpion's bio in the old comics mention it been two years since he died). MK4 in the old timeline most likely takes place 8 or 9 years after MK3. However in the new timeline, the NR invasion happens two years after Shao Kahn.

Yep.

As they never contradicted it, I'm just adopting it as headcanon. I wish it'd been an actual plot point, though.

Too is true that this influence on BttF is revealing a terrible lacks of originality from stupid boon and stupid voguel, all with this stupid excuse for make mangy, creepy and stupid and very stupid reboot.
