I just realized that the current series of MK games is possibly taking it's inspiration from the Back to the Future franchise, and the fact that Ed Boon mentioned BTTF in press interview for both MKX and MK9 really got me thinking. The storylines are comparable.
Bare with me and prepare to get annoyed----------------------------
In MK:
We open in MK9 with Armageddon and everybody is dead, Raiden sends a message back in time to himself and alters the past, as a result of this the timeline skews off into an alternate where majority of the heroes are dead. The next game opens 25 years in the future, Shao Kahn is no more and Outworld has a benevolent new leader, Scorpion is himan again, all while Earthrealm hasn't been threatened since the Netherrealm War.
...until Kano steals the amulet, the amulet winds up with Mileena who uses it as a weapon, eventually Mileena is killed and the amulet is stolen by D'vorah, D'vorah delivers the amulet to Quan Chi right before Hanzo Hasashi punches his clock, Shinnok is released from the amulet and continues his war with the revenants of the fallen heroes in tow, Shinnok immediately goes to corrupt the jinsei, which all results in Raiden becoming corrupted by dark magic and the fallen remaining as vengeful revenants....the future now looks much, much darker.
Now BTTF:
In the first movie we open with a focus on Marty McFly, a down on his luck high school loser with a less than ideal homelife who only has 3 things going for him- A steady girlfriend, some mad guitar skills and a budding friendship with an eccentric scientist.
Said eccentric scientist, Dr. Emmett Brown, involves Marty in one of his latest experiments- time travel. However, Doc Brown is gunned down before Marty's very eyes, Marty flees in the DeLorean and as a result of the chase, the flux capacitor is activated and Marty is sent by accident to 1955, where he unwittingly changes the timeline that affects his life. When he returns to 1985, he finds a much brighter future, Doc survived the shooting, his dad is a famous author who hires Biff to wax his car and he even has the truck he yearned for at the start of the movie. The future seems much brighter. Doc then arrives, with the DeLorean, and warns Marty and his girlfriend about their son.
(Now here's where the comparisons to MK come in to play)
They go to 2015, where they successfully intervene in the very event that lands Marty's son behind bars. However, Marty buys a book of sports statistics and intends to "win a few bets", Doc puts his foot down, takes the almanac away and tosses it in the garbage. As they walk away, Old Biff Tannen walks out from behind a screen door and pulls the almanac out of the trash, he was eavesdropping in on the argument. From there, Biff precedes to steal the time machine and he uses it to travel back to 1955 where he hands the book to his younger self. As a result, Marty, Doc and Jennifer return to the Alternate 1985, a dark and grim new reality wrought by a corrupt and powerful Biff.

You guys see where I'm coming from? Though absolutely not ripping off BBTF, the current MK franchise does seem to be heavily influenced by the BTTF franchise. So much so that I can almost guarantee you guys that MK11 is going to involve yet more time altering shenanigans, though it definately wouldn't be Raiden doing the meddling.
