Are the reveals lacklustre this time around?

Yea there isn't even anything to talk about.I feel that if we are going to get 28 characters then they might as well show us all but 6 of the final characters..that leaves us plenty of room for speculation.I think it may still be to early for vignettes ..we only got 4 or 5 of those last time and I think that was 5 months before the game came out.so they can hold out on those for a bit.

I remember seeing either Scorpion's or Sub Zero's vignette VERY early in the promotional process for MK9. I think it was Scorpion's as I also remember people speculating which Sub Zero was being shown off on the main website. The biography suggested Bi Han.

Scorpion's was the first one out and it was a little while after E3. And yeah, before NRS changed the mini bio to the current one on the MK9 website, it indicated that Sub-Zero was going to be Bi-Han with "knowledge of the future".

not lack luster at all. I think the problem is everyone was looking to see a bunch of classic characters come back from the grave. personally I think it's awesome. MK9 covered all the past characters it's time to move on, and evolve the series. of all the street fighters SF3 is still the best but all the whiny-whines miss and poaned about everything that wasn't there opposed to what was. you people are too stuck in the "glass half empty" mentality and need to look at things in the manner of "the glass half full", meaning appreciate what you have now because as it stands its way better than anything else they have released ever so far. so yeah. suck it up and show some appreciation

I mostly agree with you. The Comic Con absent was frustrating after the E3 aftershow hint but apart from that I like the direction NRS is going with MKX. Ed Boon made it clear that they had no intention to just re-skin the game and they wanted to move forward with the series. I like MK9 and still playing it regularly but I'm also a fan of Injustice because it brought some much needed fresh air and new characters.

And I'm with those who doesn't want a monster starting roster. MK9 has 32 characters and I'm using 6 tops including Liu Kang and Cage but I wouldn't mind if they were absent this time. 24 kombatants + 6 DLCs would be more than enough for me. I'd rather have a roster of 24 well-developed and balanced characters than thirty-something with serious issues.

I'm excited about Ferra/Torr and Kotal, definetely will give a chance to D'Vorah and patiently waiting for more new faces. I want new favorites and new special moves with new mind-blowing fatalities. There's twenty-something characters that regularly made the roster in previous MK games and their fatalities are over-used and re-invented many times. The variation system can spice things up as we can see with Raiden's variations but it's hard to come up with new moves when fans complaining if their old favorite loses a trademark move while gaining new ones.

And I like how people say that the hype has died down then Ed Boon tweets about Gamescom and you can see threads about it at the same instant in several MK forums.

Completely agree. You can only reinvent the wheel so many times before it becomes redundant. Im psyched about a new take on mk. Granted I love the classics still, but its time to evolve and move forward. Mk9 reinvented and reinvigorated the classics so to me that chapter has been closed on a high note. The new characters and art direction are a much needed breath of fresh air and I hope we see more new, original characters with innovative moves and character types. The game will be incredible people just need to approach it with an open mind. Just look at it this way, all the classic characters were new and unknown faces at one point and look how many people love them. This mk is for a new generation and these are the faces that may one day become as popular as the old ones. Evolution is inevitable. I welcome it whole heartedly.

No one was asking for a reskinned MK9.

However, is it too much to ask for vignettes, trailers, etc., basically a rigorous and aggressive marketing strategy that was used to promote MK9?

If MK was to be actually reborn, I'd go for this look, and I'd drop all the talking.
Hearing the characters talk was IMO the worst sh¡t that could happen to the series (guess it all started with Raiden talking in the intro in MK4).

I'd have the story be told in third person, in text, much like the intros and endings in the classic games, alongside cinematics with the in-game graphics.
This makes it seem like the story is told from the point of view of spectators that can only guess about the characters' intentions and motivations.

This is the only way I feel the characters and the game itself could regain the enigmatic, imposing charm in the first two games.

I agree to a point. I think that you are correct when you say that MK should be presented from a "spectator's point of view" that way the characters still maintain a level of mystique. I also agree that all the talking kind of detracted from the experience. Too many personalities were involved and while the story was comprehensive, it took away from the overall experience. I think the best way to approach the MK would be to have a character that sits on the sidelines and observes the whole scenario. Kinda like James Remar's role in "the quest"

Holy shit that's a terrible idea.
Take away every characters' personality? The intros are awesome, something that I've wanted in an MK game for the longest time. It's stupid to have fighters not even talk to each other.

Agreed with BBBLP, once Tekken introduced speech in their character intros, win poses, cut scenes, endings, etc. I felt way more immersed into the game. I wanted that for MK for so long that I completely Fangasmed when the introduced it in MKDC and continued to expand on it further in MK9 and MKX.

Honestly? I agree with their marketing tactics so far. They don't have such a big hill to climb any more, so the levels of marketing they had to resort to in the past aren't necessary. They've released two solid fighting games and there's more all around confidence in NRS. Keeping up hype for potentially a year or more is hard... It'll burn out people who aren't as immersed in the series as much as us. If they keeping on releasing things now, they'll have less to release later, when it really matters.

Hype lessens over time for things you aren't attached to... it's better they increase hype levels closer to the game's release when preorders and stuff like that will be at their peak.

I'd do the same thing.

They don't have to release huge shit though. Just some trailers for the already revealed characters showing off their variations.

Not take away their personalities as in they cease to be who they are, but less of who they are or rather fully flesh out their personalities so they don't seem like cartoon characters like they did in MK9. All it kept reminding me of was a 90's saturday morning cartoon like "sky surfers" or the "Street fighter cartoon". the characterization of characters like " Kano" and "Baraka" and "Sheeva" were horrible. These characters ceased to be conniving and treacherous with their own intentions and became "bumbling" and "incompetent" so in that respect, less is definitely more.

Hopefully MKX introduces a more mature and dark characterization and so far it looks like it's heaed in that general direction. No more "GI JoE vs Cobra" crap like MK9. honestly after playing story mode it lost a lot of it's appeal to me. Now granted I probably expect more out of MK than most people, but I expect that the tone of the combat rolls over into the story.

Exactly.
Also, besides story mode, all the cheesy BLAAARGH-toned taunting before the fights makes them look like B-movie morons.
Especially Sub-Zero and Scorpion seem unable to speak without sounding like "BLAAAARGH BLARGH BLARGH BLAGH BLAAAAAARGH!!!", but mostly all of them speak like "I'm so badass and super angry and I'ma beat you up good", constantly gesturing with their hands.
I cringe at ALL of them.

I know there won't be a shortage of dumbasses saying "well, duh, that's what they're thinking".
To those people, I say go look at some -decent- ninja or samurai or whatever, movie, and see if that's the way the characters talk and act.

Hell, just look at the intros in Street Fighter IV or Killer Instinct.

This is really late, but I love how you put words in people's mouths,

He said it was decent, which means it wasn't a bad game. He didn't say it sucks.

Obvious exaggeration is obvious.
It's sarcasm.
*Sigh*
I guess I should put "lol" or a happy face at the end of all my posts.

My point was that sales figures prove that it was more than decent.

Agreed 100%

People are forgetting that characters got leaked the same way with MK9.
Some MK9 characters were leaked like this Kano magazine leak, some got revealed via vignettes and some got revealed via Spike (Jax and Sub-Zero's klassic MK1 fatality) with Geoff Keiley.
I remember that Noob Saibot also got a gameplay trailer with his brutal X-Ray.
Shang Tsung and Liu Kang got vignettes too.
