anyone disappointed by Mk? not as hardcore as i hoped, pretty spammy

Alot of people begged for 2D. i didnt. but i for one loved MKdeception. it was pretty deep with 3 fighting styles and amazing production values. MK9 is kind of just OK, the soundtrack is the worst, the armory is the only music i like. the fighters are really tiny, and the stages/sound effects aren't that great. like its not finished. theres just no magic. The biggest complaint, just from me, is that it reminds me of tekken(worst fighter ever, sorry guys). the dial a combo thing they said they weren't going to do is getting spammed like crazy. even if your blocking, your opponent can just keep combo-ing you so you cant move and then dash-jump over you and jump punch combo. its never ending especially with raiden. i think if your fighter is blocking the combo you shouldnt be able to continue the combo. should stop after 2nd hit. it reminds me of the 10 hit dial-combo. i really was hoping for a timed counter move like in MKarmageddon/DOA4/virtua fighter5/soul cal4. lui kang has one. i can get out of players spamming special moves, but the combo spam is just ridiculous. it was skill to counter a hit, but here its all a jump punch-a-thon like mkdc. i still love MK, dont get me wrong, there are some great legit fighters playing it. but man, i need some more depth. Virtua fighter 5 just raised the bar and its like stepping back. any1 can remember a combo, but true skill is countering them with timed precision and if you miss, thats your fault. what do you guys think? Mk9 is a guilty pleasure, but i still go back to VF5(Aoi umenokuji) for my hardcore fix. 2D is just outdated to me. please dont think im a hater, deception is my fave Mk, but this one, while i like it, just feels so casual to me. more for tekken street fighter people i guess. heres hoping the patch fixes alot and balances the game to make it fair. cheers

I know what you mean but for me 2D works better, the reason they look tiny compare to other 3D mk games is first because you can go farther from the opponent and second to see the teleport characters imo and the easy moves and combos make more non fan people to fighting games or MK to enjoy the gameplay but still they can't do the damage of someone with skills in a character. The 3d vs i believe we will see it again soon imo at something similar to SM.
 
That's not the point, Capcom charged for characters that were already made and on the disk. You basically paid to unlock something already made. Skarlet is not on disk. Only her basic model that acts as a placeholder is.

I'm not complaining about Treyarch charging for map packs. More times than not, the packs are worth the price, and its good business. You also know exactly when map packs are coming out, via various promotional tactics. You can't say the same about Mortal Kombat, because NRS find it more effective to "mess" (i.e. lie) around with their fans, rather than keep them properly informed the way that most professional gaming developers do. That's why the CoD series topples everything else in sales.

15 bucks for a measly map pack? I'd rather buy a bargain bin game, thankyou very much. Hell, I could get CoD4 or WaW (maybe) for that much. The CoD series is toppling everything else because of it's simplicity. Since CoD4 it has been close to the same game rehashed year after year. And I mean year after year, because they literally can't take longer than that in between it seems like. Their games lack polish. Look at the Battlefield series for a good fps imo. They know exactly what they're doing. The last CoD that was worth anything was CoD2..
Nrs has always been like that. It's nothing new. It's not like we don't know what we're buying when it all comes down to it. They showed us more of this MK than they have of any other. It's nothing that we're not used to.

It is.. in my opinion.
The only other fighting game that i really do like other than Mortal Kombat is Killer Instinct and Soul Calibur

SF, TK, and VF are just lame and boring to me to be honest
 
That remains to be seen. We are still waiting for the full patch, in order to correct the online lag issues

Black Ops is buggy offline and online both, NRS already wins. The PS3 versionof Black Ops was especially atrocious, IDK how the 360 version is but I know it still has connection issues and hit box issues. PS3 version had terrible hit boxes, lag and awful frame rate drop.

To be fair Treyarch only releases a game every 2 years, they alternate with Infinity Ward.

Since this year they alternate every 3 years because now there are 3 studios working for Activision in Call of Duty, Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer.
 
Casually, yes, it's fun.

Competitively, no, it shouldn't last longer than EVO.

HAHA I love when people say MK wont las longer then EVO. HAHAHAHA There has never been a fighting game that has had this much hype and this many big tournaments all within 3 months of release. This is just the beggining. MK is gonna become on the same level as SF as long as the big name tournament players from SF and Marvel keep supporting it as they are right now, more people are gonna jump ship and follow. And as long as NRS keeps this game updated with new content and game patches then this MK title is sure to become a masterpiece.

That's not the same at all, lol. The only bit of Skarlet that is on-disc is nothing more than a picture and some swaying animations. That is nowhere near a legitimate character. Capcom created these characters before the game was released, locked them on the disc, and then charged people for codes that would give you what you already paid for. There's a line where good business ends, it's when you treat your customers like s--t. NRS may not be perfect, but I take their brand of good-natured goofing around better than the straight-laced bulls--t that passes for professionalism. NRS does what it does because they like interacting with the community, Capcom and Treyarch do what they do because they don't care about the community other than how much money they can milk out of them. I'll take a little bit of concern from the company I'm supporting, personally. Nice to feel like someone gives a damn lol.
 
Original poster is correct on all accounts, except for lamenting the loss of 3d Mortal Kombat. MK9 is unfinished, spammy, and an overall watered down mk/fighting game. People have to realize, ed boon designed this game with purposely cheesy/borderline broken properties, because he wants to attract the biggest audience possible. Why? Because fighting games do not generate big dollars when compared to other genres. Ed boon has stated this in magazines, and Monty Oum has stated this on one of Sebiel's youtube videos.

Ed could make the mortal kombat that most of us want, but he chooses not to.

1. Mk with the basic mechanics of mk2, like, crossup jump kicks that don't float over the opponent like they do in mk9.

2. Or, character specific jump kicks and jump punches, instead of the universal versions present in mk9. Varying JK and JP properties would also ensure that each one would travel at different angles in the air, like the old games had. How can a game have depth if 20+ character's share two identical moves, with similar properties?

3. Or how about solid collision detection? Why must players be subjected to being uppercuted when their character's ENTIRE BODY is visibly on the other side of their opponent? And why does a corner uppercut have to result in a character cartoonishly being launched conveniently out of harms way? Ed boon to the rescue to pluck the hapless noob player out of the corner into safety.

4. Why does every character in mk9 have footsies on the level of mk2 Liu Kang? Old MK is not a footsy heavy game, so only certain characters should have them in mk9.

5. Why would any designer of a mk game decide that Kung lao's spin should , not only be spammable, but also a dragon punch motion? rendering the move broken, spammy, and cheesy. in mk2 and to a lesser extent umk3, kung lao's spin must be used judiciously because the motion is difficult to incorporate and it has moderate startup and A LOT of RECOVERY! Mk 2 and UMK 3 would be unplayable if Kung lao had a dragon punch motion spin like mk9. UNPLAYABLE. If Capcom made a character like Kung Lao his health would be totally ass.

6. Why are there no jab moves with less than 6 frames? old mk had jab pressure, which, could've been tweaked and modernized to add more complexity to mk9. instead, every move is basically 6 to 30 frames long!

7. Speaking of jabs....Why does every juggle only utilize one arm? that looks stupid. Why would anyone decide to do this instead of having a natural looking one two punch, like old mk had, and like every fighting game except mk9 has.

8. Which brings me to the animations: they're horrible. The backgrounds in the game are stunning, but the character models and animations are atrocious. Worst of all they're canned, which means that instead of being able to enjoy a smooth, realistically moving mk game, I have to play a fighting game version of John Madden Warping, Sliding, Clipping football.

9. The BASICS are nonexistent, which is unacceptable. you just shouldn't do what NRS is doing, which is basically to cater to the lowest level of fighting game fan by stripping the game of subtle complexity, just to try to increase sales.

10. Complexities like: small frame jabs, and SWEEPS THAT CANNOT BE UPPERCUTED! (this has never existed in any 2d mk game, but, somehow, in mk9 you can uppercut sweeping characters). Plus, for some reason everyone in mk9 has a good anti-air uppercut. wtf? in mk2 only Liu Kang, Mileena, and Kitana have disgustingly good anti-air uppercuts. Every other character has one, but you have to KNOW the exact spacing in the game to pull them off. It's like in SSF4. Ryu's standing short kick can anti-air at 3/4 distance, while Ken's looks similar, but has a weaker hitbox, thus isn't as good.

11. The game is hella spammy and cheesy, and if you guys can't see that then i don't know what to say. You really think it's ok that a lot of character's in the game can just spam specials like they do? Imagine if Juri or Akuma could just spam dive kick, or if Zangief had Lariat and a projectile and a teleport? Or what if Ryu's tatsumaki was as fast as reptile's dash and had the same amount of recovery?

12. The Spam is there so casuals and 3d fans don't get beat in the game. As is the Slow frame execution, and the worst element ever added to fighting games since X-Factor: X-RAY!

It took you forever to present an argument that in fact is: It doesn't play exactly like MK2 and is different from other fighting games. All those complaints are extremely minor and some of them are purely denial. How can you say the models are ugly, they're marvelous. And the animations are amazing. Also, the spam argument is not valid because although special moves can be really fast, the entire game is faster than before and every move is punishable. Finally, spam is due to the players, not the game.

Oh and the game is AS YOU SAY rather noob-friendly, but it also has a pretty good level of depth.

To further reinforce your argument about this TOTALLY UNFINISHED game, show me one fighting game that has got an arcade mode, a multiple hours long story mode with such depth, a 300 challenge tower, such a big zone for unlockables (Krypt), a model-viewing mode, an online mode that has an classic arcade feel to it, such fan service in the roster and the stages and dedication in balance issues fixing.

Sledgehammer, Raven software and Infinity Ward are all working on MW3. Raven for multiplayer and IW/Sledgehammer for offline modes. I Think that is a recipe for disaster

All I can say is if your playing mortal kombat looking for a realistic fighting experience your obviously insane seriously last I checked fighting Cyborg ninjas and animal like creatures with blades coming out of their arms isn't realistic but thats the point mortal kombats charm comes from its craziness and if you think this mk is lacking depth then I don't know what to say other then I'm glad the days of every character having the same basic punches and kicks is behind us and lastly any competitive game fighting or other can be spamy if the player makes the choice of playing that way. Heck spawn camping in fPS games is a form of spam
