Roster Speculation

CBZ should have been nothing more than an alternate skin for Sub Zero using the same moves with different visual effects for them. Giving him an entire roster slot was terrible.

Agreed, again.

I've stated before that CSZ could have easily been an alternate for human Sub-Zero, the same way that human Sektor and Cyrax were alternates.

I feel like adding Rain to the "useless to the story" category is a little unfair as they purposely chose to leave him out. I'd have to see Rain as an established character and part of the story before I could say if he was useless or not.

The problem with that is that Rain's story is tied to Daegon and Taven, so I don't see NRS developping him without including his two brothers. They could have him aid Shinnok's conquest of Edenia, like Tanya, but then don't expect him to have any impact on the storyline besides being a low level goon jobbing to the good guys.

As far as I'm concerned, I agree with Marcelino, I wouldn't want to see the post MK3 characters forgotten. Sure they sucked --for both gameplay and story purposes-- but let's be honest here, so did the original characters in those games. In fact, if the pre MK3 characters debuted in the post MK3 games, I can almost guarantee that people would have found them forgettable, Sub Zero's invovment in the post MK3 plot was laughable, they took away Kabal's most noticable feature, his speed and gave nothing to replace that. So yeah, some could really use a second chance away from these crappy games.

Rain may be Taven and Daegon's half brother, but they don't need to go with that relationship to make him useful to the plot. They don't even have to mention Taven and Daegon ever again if they really don't want to. The series was rebooted. There's nothing telling NRS to revisit every single past storyline within the MK lore.

I disagree because I hate using MK9 Subs. He's slow.
Cyber Sub-Zero was my way of getting my Slurpee on with the quickness.

Fully agreed. I'd rather them never mention taven and daegon or Armageddon again.

Sub-Zero could have been given the speed of Cyber SZ, with CSZ being an alternate costume.
All that NRS would have had to change was a few animations for human and cyber's special moves, but it was totally doable.

In that case I would say, make Sub Zero a faster moving character while also making his cyber form an alt. lol I don't know... It just really burns me up that one character took two slots.

Eh, they took one very popular character can gave him two different play styles.
MK9 Sub-Zero had the variation idea before it was cool

Cyber Sub-Zero don't take a slot. If CSZ didn't integrate the roster of MK9 and was simply an alternate, NRS didn't create an other character to replace him.

This.

I thought we were done with the same character taking up 2 slots in Trilogy.
It's bad enough that we had 2 Sub-Zeros and 2 Smokes on 1 roster, back then.

They didn't need to replace him, which is the point that your missing.
They didn't replace Cyrax and Sektor when they turned cyborg, and they didn't need to replace Sub-Zero, either..

You don't know that. Just as I don't know if he replaced a character. Personally though, I feel like Rain would have been on the roster if it wasn't for CBZ and Quan Chi. The game was all about bringing back characters from the original trilogy and yet Rain was the only one left out. I feel like they removed him in favor of those two hoping no one would really care.

They were wrong. lol

What if they gave human Sub-Zero CSZ's fighting style entirely? It could work, I think.

Like I already said, Rain was never going to be in Mortal Kombat 9. They drafted the story LONG before they made the character models. Meaning they knew who was going to be in the game as they were writing it down on paper. They decided that Rain had no place in the original trilogy, and they were right. He never even became relevant until (what was supposed to be) the final game, Armageddon.

Although the Cyber Sub-Zero arc was a miss, it could have been incredible. One of the biggest "What-if"s in the MK mythos, was "what if it was Sub-Zero who was captured instead of Smoke?" Which is honestly a hell of a lot more interesting than Rain imo

Rain isn't established enough to where I can say one character is more interesting than him. He can be awesome if NRS just puts some time and energy into him. And considering he was in the original trilogy, I feel like he most definitely deserved a spot.... Love him or hate him.

At least he was pushed out as DLC. Though I'd rather he be in before CBZ and Quan Chi as he is more deserving of a spot being a classic character in a game that promised to bring back all of the original players back before it was even released.

Man.. you guys are spoiled lol.

Subzero took 2 slots.

Blazblue, Saya takes pretty much 4 slots. it's funny because it has like 23+ selectable characters. But I'm pretty sure only like 17 individual. They have a lot of character repeats with different styles/forms.

Saya
Noel Vermillion
V-13
Nu-12

are all pretty much the same character >.>

In mortal kombat they only did it with one character.

Araknyd if you're looking for NRS to cut corners to make room for an extra character.

Would you have been fine with 2 character Subzero slots. IF say Cybersubzero had all the same normals/specials. (maybe 1-2 changed specials)

Just changed a bit via speed? safe? unsafe? ect ect.

If you've ever played smash, Think Captain Falcon and Ganondorf.

Ganondorf is a clone of Captain Falcon, he shares like 90% of his moves but plays nothing alike.

Rain has no story to him though. He's a nobody, and if Ermac was never in Deception, then I would have said boo to him too. But they deemed Ermac important enough to give him an important role in the game.

There is no way you can honestly say that Rain should have been in over Quan Chi, one of the most important characters in the entire series.

Well... Okay. Not over Quan Chi. But definitely over CBZ. And I say that as a fan of both. I just hated that CBZ got his own spot on the roster. Him and human Sub Zero should have been mixed together as one (when it comes to play style) and then have the cyber appearance work as an alt.

See now I disagree on that too.
I feel like it would have been a waste of potential. To make such an iconic character into a cyborg, and then change nothing about them but their appearance?

Why turn him into a cyborg, but leave out abilities like bombs, teleports and self-destructing?

Well, some of normal Sub Zero's moves could have been visually changed to better suit a cyborg. But I guess when it comes to this we're just gonna have to agree to disagree. I love CBZ, but hate how he was included over Rain.

Ugh. I'm too tired for any more debating tonight. lol
