PS3 vs 360 Versions/Controller

Okay, so despite a few (relatively) minor gripes, I have to say that I absolutely love this game, and it does, in face, trump the original Dreamcast release of Soul Calibur for me in terms of fighting games, which was my previous favorite. However, the problem I have with this game is version specific...

Pulling off moves, like flameport with scorpion, using the 360 controller is absolutely ridiculous. Half the time it just does a low kick and nothing else. Also, the buttons are terrible for this type of game. The D-Pad is also basically useless...

Because of this, it's made me think: should I just go get the PS3 version? I have some games to trade in anyway, and gamestop is doing a "25%+ trade in credit towards MK" deal right now. So, if I trade in my 360 MK and my other games, I might only lose a few bucks from having bought the 360 version.

The real question here is, though- is it worth it, or is the PS3 controller equally crappy for fighting games? I become so frustrated with the non-responsive 360 controls that I'm considering just buying a freaking fight stick to play this game properly.

So, what do you think, is it worth switching over now? The PS3 version seems like it would have better controls, +Kratos is a nice touch, but I'll lose a little cash in the process. What do you all suggest?

PS3 controller D-Pad is far superior to the 360's. I'm having to resort to buying the upgraded 360 controller. Maybe thats worth a try before losing a shit load of money trading games.

I've yet to have a horrible problem with the 360's D-Pad while playing the game. The only time I notice is when i'll be crouching and trying to upper cut and just do a projectile. But for fast movements like fatalities or special moves I have no problem. Doing a down forward down Y works spot on for me. I could see the PS3 controller being a bit better but the D-Pad is so tiny I could see myself messing up with that also.

i was having problems with delayed timing, comfort, and overall button layout playing mk9 with the x360 controller. no matter how i configured the controller, it just never felt cozy and i had to often input moves several times for them to go off. i only own an x360 and i feel the standard wireless controller is great for other games, but it SUX for mk9, and likely other fighters, too. people who say otherwise are just fooling themselves, or do not want to say a single negative thing about x360. that said, there is a relatively cheap solution which is the marvel versus fighting pad by pdp. the difference is quite big compared to using the standard x360 pad. here is my post from another thread concerning it. x360 users who want a better experience with mk9 this is the controller to use. oh, also, the gray "new" wireless controller for x360 with the pop-up d-pad is just as bad. do not waste your money thinking its gonna give you a better mk9 experience. the d-pad can pop off, or snap off, and the alleged new design for the d-pad is slight, at best, if at all. it looks sleek and cool, but its just a slightly altered standard controller with a forced plug n play kit bundled in.

Greetings. I also play Mortal Kombat on the Xbox 360 and had been using the standard wireless controller that came with the 4gig Xbox 360 released last Summer. Let me tell you that while the Xbox 360 controller may be great for other genres of games, it is terribly unresponsive, inaccurate, and uncomfortable for fighting games. The back of my hand began to feel quite sore after two hours of playing Mortal Kombat 2011. Performing enhanced moves where you need to hold down two buttons to perform is very uncomfortable, and some moves required me to enter them at least two, or more, times for them to go off. This cannot happen in a very fast fighting game, such as Mortal Kombat. I tried several different button layouts, but each seemed worse. However, there is good news for Xbox 360 owners who are playing Mortal Kombat. I did some research and picked up the Marvel Versus fighting pad. Let me tell you what a difference this gem of a controller makes when playing Mortal Kombat. I do not like to use arcade sticks, even though they are the standard for advanced gameplay in fighting games, and far prefer a gamepad. This Marvel pad combines both an arcade stick and a d-pad into one genius solution. The bigger, more responsive face buttons are a treasure, too, as are the shoulder buttons, which are far more comfortable to use than triggers. The start and select buttons are on the top to prevent accidental pressing during a hectic fight, and the two extra buttons on the face of the controller are much better for throwing, stance changes, etc. The controller is well built, though the simple white paint on the buttons apparently can rub off with finger oil over time. The Marvel art on the controller does not rub off, though, and the controller is light, but very sturdy, and smaller for comfort. It may look oddly shaped, but for my large hands it felt like heaven. The response of the digital triggers in the direction stick is fantastic. I cannot praise this controller enough. Oh, being wired is the way to go. The response time of a wired controller over wireless is easily apparent. Even if you do not like Marvel comics, and are not a fan of the art design on the controller, it is worth every penny for anyone who plans to be a decent Mortal Kombat player, and intends to pull off the 40%+ combos on a regular basis. I am sure experts will argue that it is a gamepad, there is no way it can compete with an arcade stick, and perhaps nothing can ever beat an arcade stick, but the combination of the arcade click triggers and d-pad feel on this controller is the best of both worlds. I highly, highly recommend it for anyone who plans to do more than shoot an ice ball, then uppercut.

Here is the link to the controller http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/acc...ntroller/90035 and here is a video review of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsNLj6zHsLw

I hope this helps Xbox 360 Mortal Kombat fans who either cannot afford/find the arcade stick, or those who prefer to use a gamepad for fighting games.

i'll tell you the truth (and not becuse i have Xbox 360) i played with both controllers, the Xbox's one and PS3's one, and i gotta say that for me the Xbox one is FAR more comfortable than it was for me with the PS3's one. the PS3's controller is too small for my hands, and the triggers are really uncomfortable...

I can play the game with the 360 controller just as well as with the PS3 one. It seems to be person to person though.

The D-Pad on the PS3 is far better though. In addition from being a far cheaper single molded piece, the D-Pad on the 360 is just horrible for any game that requires precise directional input.

xbox has those new controllers where you like...turn the dpad and it makes it better for fighting games. but i think the ps3 controller is way better for fighting games. (i havent used the new xbox controllers tho)

I got big hands, I honest to god hate the d-pad on it. Perhaps i hadn't noticed before because I've never dedicated this much time to a fighting game on the 360. I played MK in my brother's PS3 and it's a world of a difference.

it is an absolute gimmick. i hope no one falls for this. the pop-up d-pad is the same shitty d-pad from the standard controller with slightly curved plastic. and in the pop-up position it feels frail and it can just snap off.

Does this transforming dpad actually work any better at all for MK? Im trying to find the perfect controller for xbox and currently im contemplating getting a converter so i can use a ps2/3 controller haha

I am getting the transforming D-PAD it looks as MUCH better then the original controller. All reviews factor in saying it is identical to the PS3's controller in the way it feels and performs.

If anyone actually gets it, would you mind posting a review with respect to it's performance in MK over the current x360 controller? It would be greatly appreciated as I'm sure there's a large number of members contemplating getting it.

I think it's such BULL that MS forces you to buy a play and charge kit with the controller just to raise the damn price. 64 bucks.....

btw mortal kombat rarely requires PRECISE directional input i mean for D,B, i just do a quarter circle motion on the d-pad. and to me cricle motions on 360 are so much easier than on ps3.

Immediate directional changes are fine, I mean, I've been doing that for almost 2 decades in MK, but for some damn reason (maybe its the massive rust since I haven't played MK this much in such a long time) I simply despise the D-pad on the 360. Sometimes I'm trying to input something like U, D, B and I get something completely different. My gripe with the single piece D-pad is this, if you want to give 360 degrees of motion, then isn't that what the analog is for? the directional pad was intended for U,D,F,B; we can adjust transitions via swiping as you mentioned. Perhaps I'll work my way around it the more I progress, but its just an added obstacle for those that share my opinion.

It is a well known fact that the D pad on the xbox 360 is utter garbage. A lot of people have various theories as to why this is. Some say that it's because Nintendo holds too many patents on the best D pad variants. Same thing with Sony. The ONLY way to fix this issue, is by modding the hardware in a 360 controller.

There are videos on you tube that explain how to do it, and while it takes about an hour and a half, it is well worth it. The main issue with the 360 D pad is that it is unresponsive. There isn't a nice snap back after you hit one direction. So after you press D, getting back to center before you hit L, R or U is difficult. The mod inserts a thin plastic disc(from a butter container or pringles can) under the grey mechanism. If you do it properly, the result will be a snappy, even GOOD D pad.

There is another mod that should be performed at the same time. That is, once the controller is taken apart, you need to shave the lip down in order to prevent the sides of the D pad disc impacting the border. Anyone can tell that it hits it. Just press left really hard, listen to the sound, then press right. They're much different, because one side stops much more abruptly than the other. By sanding down the inside of this ring(and even cutting it down with a knife) you can make your controller whole.

If you're unwilling to void your warranty, please be advised that the "upgraded" D pad is the SAME D pad. It's every bit as unresponsive and STILL impacts the side ring. Please don't waste your money. If you still need a controller, I suggest a fight stick first, and a third party controller if it's all you can afford.
