A thought on post 2D characters

Does anybody else feel new characters post MKT had their images hindered because the games were in 3D? I mean 3D MK games aren't looked upon as positively as 2D. Does anyone else think these characters made bad first impressions because the games they debuted in were sub par?

I personally feel this is the case for SOME of the new characters introduced post MKT. I feel characters like Shinnok, Tanya, Fujin, Kai, Reiko, Nitara, Ashrah, Mavado, and Havik have the potential as fan favorites if presented in the right situation.

There are in fact characters that are worthless from this era as well.

Jarek - Kano ripoff
Hsu Hao - essentially the same as Kano story wise and uninspired all around
Drahmin - Wore a diaper
Kenshi - Had potential but ruined as being an Ermac ripoff, this could be rewritten though
Li Mei - Not terrible, but not interesting either
Bo Rai Cho - Comedy relief that Cage should be
Meat - Doesn't need to be a cannon character
Frost - Sub Zero ripoff and not needed
Dairou, Darrius, Hotaru - added nothing interesting to the story, and not interesting characters
Kira - Sonya and Kano ripoff
Kobra - Ken
Shujinko - Boring and steals moves

So anyway, does anyone agree that 3D characters would be better represented in 2D?

You like Kai?
I love you

Yes, I do agree with you about some of the characters receiving hate only because of the games they were in. I believe characters like Kai, Fujin, and Havik would have been accepted better if they started off in the 2d games.

Oh, and I take back what I said about loving you, I just saw what you said about Shujinko

I think it's kinda hard to pinpoint why the newer characters are so widely disregarded. I know they largely seem like copies of earlier characters, but wasn't basically half of the 2D roster just palette swaps?

Yes, but they didn't share moves.

Everyone after them all used fireballs and such.

I think this is why Quan Chi and Reiko were popular, they seemed different and shinned among the "dull" characters.
Quan Chi threw green skulls (Pretty ****ing badass)
Reiko threw ninja stars.

I didn't mind Frost really, she made a nice change. However I hated most characters from MK:DA. Most of them stole moves and it just wasn't good for the series.

I feel very few characters after UMK3 (MK4 game and forward) have the same charisma as the old we love coming from Mk1,MK2,MK3 and UMK3 ..... The "old" fighters are classic, beloved, fan favorite and well known ....

IDK, maybe some designing looks, and the fact of 3D MKs characters looking so weird strange in some cases, not fitting the main idea of the old MKs, all of this can contribute for now the fact we prefer and we are loving the old school coming back ....

I think Havik, Li Mei, Kira and Kenshi "interesting" characters, but , that's all. It's pretty tough to overcome how good and classic gorgeous the old characters are, so, we will have to wait new MK modern games using this pattern of the new MK9, to see if characters from MKD, MKA, MK4 etc, can fit well for the new fan base .....

My faves post MKT would be Quan Chi, Kai, Fujin, Tanya, Hotaru, Dairou, Havik. And I don't really care if they are not in 2D games, because MKD is my fave anyway. I do hope all of these I mentioned will return in the future (we know Quan Chi will).

I freaking LOVE Reiko. He is my favorite kharacter after Shao Kahn. He might take Sheeva's place in my top five. I really do think all those kharacters you name kan do much better in storylinewise. Kinda liked the designs on some of the kharacters. Some of them have really great storylines but they have nothing do with the story itself. I really hope in future games they khange them up. I still like those kharacters. I just wouldn't play with them.

I think another good reason these characters weren't well received was they were introduced in large amounts and then never made second appearances until MKA. They never had a chance to develop. This is something they need to fix with future games, don't abandon a character after one game. Also don't introduce 12 new characters at a time.

Just a note I put this topic in this section because I figured a character from this era would be DLC or in a sequel/future game.

Another person that loves MKD. Kudos to you!

I think if the clones were remade into something unique it would work quite well.

Spoiler:
I think Frost could actually have a place in MK10

Post MKT kharacters of some value include, Quan Chi, Kai, Reiko, Frost, Fujin. I always liked Shinnok, but thought his awesomeness was dealt a major blow when he was playable from the outset in MK4. Took away too much of his badassery. Maybe he'd work better if he wastreated like a real boss kharacter.
