10:46 AM CST -
It feels like the year 2010 just started, but January is about to come to a close. It's been fairly quiet in the MK world until this week with a few little tidbits we'd like to share with you.

Earlier this month MK Universe noticed that one of the MK Team's PSN accounts was noticed connected to the PSN Network while play testing a build of MK9.

Some have assumed it was Ed's PSN account because of the word "Noob" in it, but in fact it was one of the many public accounts created for the "Fight the Developers" night from a year ago. These accounts have been fairly dormant since then, so either this was a planned "leak" or an accident on the part of one of the game's developers.

Also some more rumors of a new MK Movie has been floating around again. This time the new owners of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Warner Bros is in the middle of the latest rumors. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that WB recruited budding screenwriter Oren Uziel to write a reboot of the Mortal Kombat series for the big screen. Uziel has gotten some buzz for his script Shimmer Lake which made the 2009 Black List of great un-produced movie scripts. It makes complete sense that Warner wants to put some money behind Mortal Kombat, in both film and game realms, so we can't wait to see this rumor materialize. If this is true we expect Threshold Entertainment's Larry Kasanoff will be getting some lawyers involved soon to stake his claim in the franchise he abandoned years ago.

What are your thoughts on a Mortal Kombat reboot? What would you like to see? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the Komments!

That reminds me, the company who made the first two films tried to get some dosh out of the MK franchise being sold... Wait I'll try to track that article down. Hang on. Edit: http://blogs.wsj.com/bankruptcy/2009/06/26/mortal-kombat-caught-in-legal-combat/tab/article/ Not where I saw it first, but it'll do.

Yeah, I forgot to check that lol. I don't think Threshold and everyone linked to them deserve anything after the second movie came out. Lets toast to the new rumors and the hope that some silences the last traces of MK:A.

Well, this is something new.

That screenshot made me pee a little from excitement <3 I've already said my part about the movie in another thread. Christopher Lambert or GTFO.

Agreed, I want Mr. Lambert's return very much. But this picture lends much credence to the idea that we will see a fairly polished reveal of MK9 soon. I mean, they have it in playable form already.

Probably making the trailer for MK9 with the ingame models. Hmm...

Ed boon has been more talkative on his twitter.... not that he's saying anything worth anything.

How exactly would any new MK movie be a "reboot"? in the sense it's under new management *and* there's been a gap in production I suppose, but the story line isn't going to be restarted.. it's all based on a particular set of tournaments, using most of the same well known characters. That's it. Until I read them actually announce "Yeah we're re-writing the first movie's plot", it's not a meme to call this a "reboot" /fad killer

Using the same logic, wouldn't Batman Begins then not be considered a reboot, even though it's always been referred to as such? This new movie would be a "reboot" simply for the fact that it wouldn't connect to the storyline from the other two movies. Based on what we know, of course, we can't say that it will absolutely not be a continuation of Annihilation (doesn't the thought of that just make you vomit in terror?), or even the original, but that still seems extremely unlikely based on what we've heard so far. Granted, what we've heard is practically nothing, but it's been a very long time since any rumor about a third MK movie even implied that it would continue the story from the previous movies.

Here's an article IGN did about what they want to see in the movie reboot. http://movies.ign.com/articles/106/1065271p1.html

IGN got Kung Loa and Liu Kang down as brothers (Kung Lao died within the first few minutes (Liu Kang's brother)). Edit: Wheres the in-posting quote bar? anyway direct from IGN's article: Kung Lao: One of the disappointing aspects of the movies is that Kung Lao's role was greatly downplayed. The character died within the first moments of the original film, with his death serving as Liu Kang's motivation for entering the tournament. This time, we'd like to see Kung Lao actually join his brother in kombat. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks proves the franchise is often at its best when these two join forces.

I was just going to comment on that. I guess IGN missed the thousand times he was referred to as "Chan" in the movie. Maybe they just thought that was a hip nickname Liu gave him. I think they only even mention Kung Lao by name once in the movie, and it was just Liu Kang saying he was a descendent of the original Kung Lao.

I can agree on certain aspects remaining the same or changing for a 'reboot' to occur. The "using the same logic" argument in order to prove my point invalid really isn't necessary nor progresses the influx of information ITT. as your second paragraph goes on to both agree and refute my point (well played!) the story isn't out so it's not really worth applying an opinion yet, take my comment more as rhetorical. now that you asked, yes I can still stand on the fence whether Batman Begins is completely a reboot - that is to say it's still Batman, and still his story. Point being, Batman *still* ended up a crime fighter.. Liu Kang will *still* win a tournament. Interestingly, that IGN article says at one point this will be a reboot, so more importantly we see changes (based on their logic, in fact until they even mentioned changing the story that article really wasn't about rebooting IMO) that are positive and well received.

I'm surprised IGN gave it that much hype. This is a site prone to be biased on some franchises. Still gamespot is normally the worst for that, I don't go to either site because of it though. And IGN is getting much better, whereas gamespot remains roughly the same. IGN's mistake though can be put down to a non-fan making a comment on a series. Like me stating I hate Harry Potter in my early days of the film release and never stating why. Now I've seen it I'm in much better mind I hate it because I can list why (and no I'm not listing H.Potter it here in an MK thread).

Can you list in a new thread then? I wanna discuss that.

If I was prepared to do that, they'd be a One Piece topic as well which someone wanted me to get up 6 months - a year ago. I didn't do that, I'm not likely to do this here.

I just love the idea of them doing a reboot of the films!!! I've suspected and known sometime of the coming MK9 game but it's been awhile since I've heard some news on another film! The last thing I heard was that the film would be started in November of 05 and now we finally have even at least speculations and rumors at this point which I truly hope would become reality pretty soon!

if MK 9 comes out it needs to have all the characters like they had in armageddon but each should have their own unique fatality. For the Konquest they should have it like mortal kombat shaolin monks but instead of just lou kang and kung lao you can choose from anybody thats not in the story plot. For just arcade mode they should bring back the choose your destiny from the original mortal kombat games.

I'd prefer not another MK:arm, as nice as it is, that many characters makes them all dull. Too simulair to each other.
