Will Story Mode be canon?

In past MK games(in most games actually), it frustrates me that when you play and get an ending, it turns out to be non canon and irrelevant to the story...

I really hope that if story mode is really 15+ hours of game play, that what you do actually has weight to the story. Not everyone has to be the champion of Mortal Kombat or get a good ending, that can be saved for Arcade mode or whatever, but for story mode, I hope the story for each character being told is canon.

Well, according to an interview with Ed Boon, the choices you make during story mode alters the story. So we wont know which ending will be canon or not.

I don't think they've really said much about the story mode other than a few snipets here and there (like the 15 hour long comment, I've heard that too). 15 hours for a fighting game is a really long time and my guess is that you do not play 1 player like the traditional arcade / ladder approach like in previous games. I figure the story mode has you playing every single character as the story unfolds in a very pre-determined sort of way. Ed has been quoted saying there are no fatalaties in story mode. Makes sense if you are going to be doing 15 hours of fighting it doesn't make sense to fight with a character at some point that you've technically already killed in a previous fight.

I could be wrong, but it sounds plausible and also awesome to me. Give us a long story mode, lots of cut scenes, and make it a very linear path so that the story detailed with a solid and obvious foundation for moving forward. I'll be very interested to hear the rest of the details on story mode as they are announced.

You sure Story mode is a seperate thing from Arcade?

I was under the impression it was the same thing....

I suspect the main story mode will be canon otherwise it seems a bit of a pointless mode. I suspect only a couple of arcade endings will probably be canon although they might all be, which I'd prefer!

Curious, I hadn't heard that. I wonder if it's sort of a combination of what you said and what I said. With no fatalaties, it's possible the story can unfold a little differently in the middle as you play through it. Maybe to give more replay power for multiple playthroughs. But hopefully the ending will be the same regardless of what happens in the middle because I'd really like to see a known story line take shape to move us forward with these "2nd generation" of MK games.

Nope, I'm not sure... can any of us really be. But it sure seems like it. We know there are tag team matches, the challenge tower, etc... so it sure seems like the STORY mode is a completely seperate deal. And like I said, my opinion is that you won't always have control over who you fight or who you fight with. Sort of a way to let you experience all of the fighters and getting background/story info on everybody instead of just the characters you like. I just think it's going to be something completely new and different, but they are still giving us the traditional arcade style ladders too. (probably standard and tag team ladders)

Hasn't Boon being saying recently that you alter reality by going back in time in the story mode? Heh-heh.

It would be awesome if possible choices carried over into MK10 through saves like in Mass Effect.

I think we are reading too much into what Ed said. All he is talking about is how this is the original MK cast and "timeframe", but the whole back in time thing will make things turn out different this time. So they (NRS) are able to change the story to playout differently this time w/out it completely ruining what happened in the previous games. Time travel is nifty that way! He did not say anything about the players changing the course of the story based on their actions... at least not in that video.

I'll add some deep thoughts about my opinion of story mode and why I think it's completely seperate from the arcade ladder that will also most likely be in the game.

So this game has all/most of the characters and stages from MK - MK3. I really think the story mode takes us through the long journey of each tournament MK, MK II, MK3 and it sort of "holds our hand" as we go through each one. I think we'll play through the original MK tournament where Goro/Shang are eventually defeated and I think we'll see a similar chast of characters in this part of the story... but I think it will be a linear path and we will be presented with the end game scenario. The story mode will then progress into the MKII timeline and we'll see the familiar Outworld MKII levels and also be introduced to new characters that weren't in the first part of the story. I think it plays out this way all the way through the end of the MK3 events, with new characters and environments opened up all along the way. And in the end it will all be the big grand (15 hour) story that NRS wants us to see.

One of the main things I have to back up this theory: The cinematic trailers

Sub-Zero: Scorpion says: "You are not sub-zero". Sub zero: "My brother participated in this foley, I fight for his honor"...they are in Kahns arena when this happens... perhaps Scorpion kills the original sub zero as part of the first tournament story line... he is then questioning this "new" sub zero in Khans arena in the 2nd tourney. Why not? Sub-Zero is admitting his brother participated in the tournament... Scorpion knows this isn't the sub-zero that he once knew....

Scorpion: "This is where I was reborn... this is where you will pay". It sure seems like he is talking to somebody that should know he was once dead... the original sub-zero would know that and it also supports my theory from above!!! Makes perfect sense to me that he would kill sub-zero here and then question the new sub zero in the MKII tournament!!

Mileena: Johnny Cage asks: "What are you doing out here"... "Looking for a new playmate". Seems to me like this is where Mileena is introduced into the game cause Johnny isn't sure who she is. Looks like an MK3 stage too, so maybe she doesn't come into the story in MKII anymore.

Besides the cinematic trailers, we see some other things like Kitana chained up in Khans arena instead of Sonya / Kano as it was previously. Very plausible this is done on purpose and that she will be introduced sometime during the events of MKII or perhaps in MK3.

Surely I'm not the only one that thinks this is all possible... seems very likely from what I've seen. The whole time-travel thing has really opened up all possibilities and they can really do so many things here. But all in all, I think I'm right when I guess that we will see a very static story line that introduces characters/places/events in a very linear fashion that follows the same premise as before, but with lots of cool twists and additions along the way. I'm super pumped either way!!!!

Excellent post The Aggie, but don't forget Noob Saibot's trailer, with the fact that he will need to meet his brother even after he has died after MK1. That will take some time to get through, definitely.

Yeah buddy, I didn't even get that far in my other post. In Noob's cinematic trailer I think he says, "We share blood... we are not brothers!" This is in the MKII forest level. To me it makes perfect sense that Sub-Zero is killed by Scorpion in MKI... Sub-Zero turns into Noob at some point after... as events progress into MKII, the new Sub-Zero enters the tournament to avenge his brothers death... little does he know that he later meets that very man in the form of Noob Saibot!

One thing I haven't even considered here... perhaps we'll even see Sub-Zero kill the "not dead" version of Scorpion in the first part of the MK trailer. The whole cinematic with Scorpion talking to (perhaps) Sub-Zero about being re-born would be even more awesome as Sub-Zero faces the very thing he killed.

Complet awesomeness. I think we might be on to something here. I hope I don't get my heart set on something really cool like this only to be let down by a completely generic story arch. With the attention to detail they've given everyting else, I really don't think so. I think we are in for a real treat.

Sorry for the long posts, but I wanted to show the detail in what I was thinking and to also get back to my original point... I don't think the story is something that we will change as we play through it. I think we'll be thrown into pre-determined fights and cut scenes that lead us down a specific path. From start to finish we will play every character, visit many locations, and see lots of cut scenes. Here's hoping at least!

I think we're getting a more indepth look at what happened in the story during MK1-UMK3. I mean all of the stuff we seen was basically text and no real showing, but now we're getting a first hand experience of what happened, with a few twists and turns.

I hope that doesn't happen, because it would take away some re-playability of the game knowing that the end will be the same.
I agree, I think all the endings for each character shoudl be unique, and it wouldn't make sense if you are playing as a character defeat all the bosses and then it says "Lui Kang defeated Shao Khan and derp derp..."
I would like to know what happens when character x wins, and then we will find out what the true ending is in MK10, hopefully some aspects of each characters ending are incorporated into the cannon.
