Why is the camera pulled so far back on regular SDTV?

For some reason on my regular TV the aspect ration is different and the characters are much smaller than in the GDC videos. they reach less than half the height of the screen and you can barely see what's below their feet. Also when you are far apart you are really tiny.

One good effect is that you can see the epic vastness and grandeur of the stage, but I wish there was an alternate camera option to switch to a closer camera whenever I want to.

i think that in the options section there's a way to place the screen however you waant it, you can raise the life bars, and things like that. Take a look =]
 
The game is made for the widescreen ratio so as I notice the farther you're apart from your opponent the smaller you are and you get bigger as you get closer. I actually like it unlike other fighting games which they're always the same size and cartoonie looking

Tried that already, you can't access the audio/ video options (as well as social messaging).

Yeah there's scaling, but on an SDTV even when you're right next to each other you're still tiny (less than half the vertical height).
 
How big is your tv ? Because i did noticed the difference is those videos. Mine looks exactly like the one in the second video, but the first video it looks like he's playing it on a huge tv or something or its on widescreen i don't know but it does look weird.
 
the 2nd video is on a tv that is a flat panel lcd, either 720p or 1080p...you can get a vizio for around $200....also you want to use an HDMI cable, not the original coaxial cables.

Yea thats what i got mines a 37" & it looks like the one in the second video maybe since yours might be a 27'' Jakarta it does that effect it zooms out. Just go to your t.v's menu and there should be an option for you to set it up to full screen or widescreen i think you can even zoom in a little don't know if that helps or not.
 
I know I may sound like an ass here but seriously...Get an HDTV. You can get a nice 26 - 30 inch LCD TV for less than $250 at most places. It's well worth the investment, man. Don't listen to anyone when they tell you "You don't need one!" or "They are too much money!" because:

A: You DO need one. As we advance further and further into what gaming companies have in store of the future of gaming, SDTV's are going to be taken off the market completely. (I'm surprised you can actually still buy them) Everything is HD and everything is going to continue to be HD or better.

B: They are NOT expensive. If it was still the year 2003, I could understand. However, the prices on HDTV's have gone down DRASTICALLY.

I understand how times are tough but save up if you need to. It's going to pay off in the end.
 
people saying him to get an HDTV just shut up. who you are to say him what to buy? you dont know his financial situation. he's not blaming anyone he's just asking if he can fix something.

@dovahkiin - Whenever I see you on the forums, youre either telling off other members, or youre in an argument with one. Chill out, no one was telling him to throw away his old TV and buy an HD one, we are giving him suggestions to benefit him for the future.
 
I found a solution to your problem. Go to Settings> Display Settings> then select Composite/Video instead of having it set for a regular crt tv select 16:9 (it will work) it will it make the Mortal Kombat characters on screen pretty big (a little over half the screen size) and make it more playable. Though the menus will appear squished a bit but makes the fighters far more easier to see.

Thanks! :) I went to my settings, I was already set at Composite/ S Video, ratio 4:3. So I changed the ratio to 16:9, and now even though the menus are squished, my characters are at the perfect height. Only problem is that they are squished in so they look abnormally thin.

I'm going to play around with more settings, but would appreciate it if you guys had more solutions.

Edit: took some pics. They are crappy, but they should illustrate what I'm talking about.

Maybe in the full version you'll be able to adjust the video in the game settings. In the setup menu in the demo it has audio/video but it's not selectable.
