Okay, so here's the main thing the next MK movie needs: it needs to completely disassociate itself from Mortal Kombat 4 and before!!! Those games are now becoming 8 to 13 years old. Most of the mainstream audience has forgotten about them. It needs to focus on the Deadly Alliance. It's fresh, it's contemporary, and the Shao Kahn story was done in Annihilation. Forget him, forget the cyborgs, forget the Outworld invasion. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung! It'd be an easy transition from the first movie to this one (if that is indeed true from what you said).

I say g with MK4 actually, you can use it for a further movie based on MK 5 and possibly 6 later. That way you can set the scene for it and make it better. Skippy ahead and leaving out MK4's story content I don't think would be wise. Cause then if they wanted to in deed go onto make another movie, a fourth one, skipping over so much story line would leave too much room for plot holes.
Anyway thye properly wll go into no.5 in this movie. In the end of MK4 Raiden becomes a elder god. In MK5 he drops it to be th old self he was. If they put that in th movie, its a good cance they will continue on with MK5 plots.

i think that the new movie should folow the storyline of MK2 and so on..
no shinnok, no cyber ninjas, just MK2 stuff! you want cyber ninjas? they should be in the 4th movie, shinnok in the 5th, the deadly aliance in the 6th and so on!
