One thing I've often wondered about the character is...well, given that MK canon is that he killed his murderer in the first tournament, what reason did he ever have to return? Not just because he's popular...which is probably the main reason, but... :P

In all seriousness, most "vengeful spirit" characters return to their afterlife or netherworld after their revenge has been carried out in most media, so why does Scorpion continue to fight even after his mission was finished? Is there a decent explanation for this, or is it just... "Hey, he's popular! Let's keep him in the series!"?
 
Well, in the deeper narrative that MK9's story mode portrayed, Bi Han may or may not have been the murder of Hanzo's family. Remember, it was left ambiguous and Quan Chi simply fed him what he wanted to see. Not to mention, wasn't it Quan Chi who brought Scorp back in his wraith form? Perhaps one of the side effects of Quan Chi bringing him back was that Scorp was essentially at his beck and call, hence why he appeared in the tournament again, fighting for Outworld. Quan Chi seems like the kind of guy to pull that crap, lol.
 
Why Scorpion has been around Story Wise (even though the reel reason is for being one of the fan favorites)

Well in MK2 Scorpion came back because he had mistaken The younger Sub Zero for Bi Han, when he realized this was a different Sub-Zero he became his guardian
In MK3 Scorpion was recruited by Kahn and later switched sides when he learned he was fighting against sub-zero
In MK4 they returned to Scorpion wanting to kill Sub-Zero, because of the slightly altered story presented in mythologies. So in 4 Scorpion blames the entire Lin-Kuei which includes the younger Sub-Zero. He finds out it was Quan Chi in his ending and then goes after him
In Deadly Alliance Scorpion is hunting Quan Chi after he escapes hell. he is ambushed by oni however and tossed into ShangTsungs soulnado
In Deception the elder gods recruite Scorpion promising to reserect his family if he hunted Onaga for them
In Armageddon he's just pissed that the elder gods screwed him over and resurrected his clan as hell spawn like him, and like all the warriors aims to reach Blaze for a reward

and now in MK9 he seems just to be tethered to Quan Chi as a servent,
 
yeah in the new timeline scorp is basicly quan chi's B**** right now. hopefully that all changes in the next game whenever it comes out 3-5 years from now.
