Rest In Peace

Alright, I know many of you don't wanna hear this and I don't want to believe it either, but the sad truth is that Mortal Kombat as a franchise is dead! Sure, Midway will rehash, resell storylines and try to make each subsequent Mortal Kombat game like a Virtua Street Tekken Calibur game. Mortal Kombat was good, Mortal Kombat 2 was Mortal Kombat times 10, after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 the gameplay went downhill and it's just not as fun anymore as it used to be. Sure, I love the MK storyline, I think the storyline for MK beats the other fighting game franchises' storyline hands down!!! It's a phenomenon like Star Wars and such!

However, we all know that you can only go so far with storyline alone. There's a reason why games like the Tekken, Street Fighter, and King of Fighters franchises have withstood the sands of time; their replay value, fierce competition, tight knit fighting game community, such as having tournaments at the local, national, and international levels, and a loyal fan base.

For example, I've mentioned at a local fighting game tournament that we should hold Mortal Kombat Armageddon or at least an Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 tournament and people would rather play Fists of The North Star, Guilty Gear Accent Core, Soul Calibur 3, Virtua Fighter 5, etc. The response I usually get it, "It's Mortal Kombat" after I say "why can't we have a side tournament for Armageddon or one of the old school MK games".

In closing, the other fighting game developers better not follow the footsteps of Midway with their Mortal Kombat or they will lose their base too, notabley Capcom. Even loyal Street Fighter fans and hard core SF tournament players are pissed off at Capcom with their rehashing of every possible previous SF game ever made. Where is Street Fighter 4?

What does everyone here from TRMK think?

Well yeah, part of me agrees. Armageddon I already don't play anymore. But I thought it was more because the additional content just was not good enough. Also the air juggling was poorly thought out, generic and boring. However, I still want another MK and I'll still be happy when a new one is announced.

I could not agree more with you in regards to Street Fighter over rehashing and re-releasing the old games, and I think that from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon there wasn't enough progress made on the gameplay. Death traps were a really welcome addition, as were hari karis. Kreate A Fighter was good and is the path of all future gaming it would seem, Tenchu Z anyone? Kreate a Fatality was poor, and they dropped Hari Karis (time constraints my butt, they hardly changed any of the existing kombatants). Konquest isn't really all that fun and outside of Soul Calibur series there have not been many good side quest games in any game (yet they managed 2 in SC3).

Keeping up with the Jones does seem to be the way of the industry these days. MK could go back to 2D and make a ripper like the old ones, but we know they won't. (C'mon Boon, prove me wrong). Could they take 3-D fighting in a direction no-one else has? Aerial combat seemed like a good, but poorly executed idea, I actually was expecting mid-air slugfests, counters and jumping fireball fun. More traps, not just death traps perhaps? Like the acid on MK:DA, that was cool and could've been expanded on. Make the pick up weapons more innovative. Chain throws need to make there way into the series, which yes it does borrow or steal if you must from Tekken and Virtua Fighter, but makes sense, they are supposed to be martial arts experts. Maybe something like super moves need to be brought in?

So whaddaya reckon Juergen, or anyone else, can Boon the Builder fix it?

The main point I was trying to make is that there is not a big Mortal Kombat scene anywhere at all in the world like with Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and Street Fighter franchises. Just look at sites like SRK and Zaibatsu. They outnumber MK forums like 10 to 1. When was the last time you saw a major Mortal Kombat tournament besides at ECC. Even at ECC only like 10 or 12 people signed up for the tournament whereas other fighters had 40+ people sign up!!!

When will Mortal Kombat be at EVO in Las Vegas? I'm goiong to say that it's not going to happen.

Here's what others think:

Well, I think you could attribute some of the drop off to online gaming markets perhaps? I seem to think that since they have made the online modes quite good that there isn't much call to go looking for somewhere else to play competitivly now. But yeah, I haven't seen any tournaments since UMK3.

I pretty much have lost interest in MK. I still love the old 2D classic MK games but after that I don't care for it. I think a lot of people have lost interest. Our boards are dead X_X

Yeah!! MK just went into hiding, trying to recuperate before MK8 comes out. Sometimes the best games need to pull back in order to come out and be the best.

MK will never be dead as long as those who remain are loyal to it!

That said, there are trillions of other forums where they have great discussions about Mortal Kombat, or even something not related to Mortal Kombat, they just have people who have a mind and want to discuss it with other people with minds. Mortal Kombat isn't dead, TRMK is, we've just run out of ideas to talk about. I say that we go the way of MegaMan Matrix, say we're going to update the site, then close it down for two months, only to pull it up exactly the same as it was. That way, we have those who are truly loyal to the site return and be refreshed with ideas, and we can weed out those who were just kind of slacking along.
It's a tough regime, but I think it can work.

I'm not going to say that the 2d MKs aren't the best, I'm simply gonna say get out of the stone age. You know that if the new games weren't 3d, Midway would probably be bankrupt by now. The 3d MKs saved that company's bacon because everyone knows that if another 2d MK was released and NOT on a portable system, no one would buy it except maybe the few people who grace these boards.

Ill always play a new MK, but theres no denying the older games are much much better than the 3D games. But IMO the last 3 3D games werent bad and Deception was very fun IMO, but I doubt it will ever be the same as it use to be. Not dead though, still my 3rd or 4th favorite fighting game.

the new mks doesnt have the same mystery and appeal to it, remember when reptile was a rumor? now it feels as if their just making shit up as they go along. i havnt even played armegedon.

I hate 3D MK. It makes it suck so bad. 2D MK was way better.

its not the 3d that makes it bad it is the developers who do that. in a perfect world, i picture a 3d mk to have close to the same physics engine as resident evil 4. with the stage fatalities involving the same properties, while the actual fatality sequences partake a indigo prophecy mechanic with it involving a combo of presses to complete the fatalities( with a secondary option to switch to classic input mode for old school gamers.).also, i would take a cue from wu-tung shaolin stlye and make it possible for gamers to unlock fatalities to use, upto five. and yes mk shaolin monk did that but not incredibly well, plus they stole it from that wu-tang. next would be the create a character mode.
for that section, i would let that be part sd vs. Raw and part fighter maker, meaning you could choose from an already pre-rendered fatality and moveset, or if you got time, make one from sratch. what do you think people.
