*My Story* MK9 Awareness - What Blew My Mind !!!

*fairly long post*

Ok, first a little backstory. With my studies lately I haven't really had time to socialize and go to parties much which is why I hadn't really had much contact with a lot of other people (friends, fellow students, etc.) The occasional beer with my best buds on the weekend, then back to studies, that's it. Tonight, however, I was completely thrown off by a simple realization. I had no idea how many "casuals"/non-hardcore gamers/people have no idea whatsoever Mortal Kombat is even coming out. Here's the event from tonight that literally blew my mind:

Our university department (software engineering, i.e geekland) organized a LAN party in the evening in 2 of our pc/robotics labs and we had 2 giant projectors always showing some gameplay from different PCs around the 2 halls. We had a good 100 people show up, good advertisement and all that jazz. I was in charge of 1 of the screens since I didn't feel like gaming myself; first I streamed some of the StarCraft 2, League of Legends and Black Ops games going on, then some music videos, whatever kept people happy ya know. I even "casted" some wager SC2 game, weird stuff like that. Anyways...

Around 1 am we still had a good 50 people there (we usually end the even at around 4 am) and I had just stumbled upon one of the MK streams with story mode on my laptop so I decided to stream it for a bit. A few guys in front turned right around and the expressions on their faces told me they had no idea wtf was going on on that huge screen in front of them. So I cranked up the volume to the max.

Lo and behold, everyone pretty much dropped what they were doing, it was right when an X-Ray move popped up too. I invited everyone to come by to witness the revival of one of the greatest fighting franchises (or some hype-building thing like that, I don't remember exactly). People literally paused their games to stand up and move closer to the screen since the crowd was getting pretty big. Now I had to explain to pretty much everyone that MK was getting a reboot, that it was coming out next week and that it had made a lot of changes in order to make it fun and accessible to everyone. Keep in mind that we had both casuals and hardcore gamers in that bunch.

Anyways, people were literally blown away. Many just picked up a beer or a pizza slice, took a chair and started watching. I left the stream on until the end of the event and everyone was talking about it. Many mentioned they might pick up a copy at release because the game looked too good to be true. We decided that next semester (this was our last LAN for the winter semester) we were definitely going to look for sponsors in order to buy 2 consoles and have MK available. I mean, hell, if the guy in charge of the budget was so impressed he approved it immediately, the game must have done something right. I believe the word is...sensational. I'm talking about the intial effect it has on the audience - the X-ray, the fatality. Good stuff.

All this leads me to believe a lot of people have no idea what the new MK is all about. They probably heard that "hey, that old game with fatalities? yeah, it's getting a remake, who cares right". Show people the game exists and you'll be surprised with the results.

This is why I think...nay, I KNOW we need to spread the word of KOMBAT and let the world know it's coming. Tell your friends, tell your co-workers, tell that old lady chasing her cat on the street. Even those annoying girl-scouts that try to sell you stale cookies. At the very least you'll scare them away from your house for good. ;)

Talk about a long-arse story, but I believe you already know I take my time to make sure I post only the good stuff for my fellow favorite forum-goers :)

Long live Kombat!

I think the reason WB didn't make commercials [aside from Game Stops] is because they already paid a lot bringing NRS from Midway's huge debt. Along with paying for a huge budget really makes it hard to make a bunch of advertisements that'd cost additional millions.

Probably gave GS the Scorpion Klassic skin in exchange for advertisement issues.

Yeah, unfortunately sometimes average games get a ton of publicity while great games like MK only get a few internet commercials. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, though, and shouldn't be underestimated :)
