Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter..R.E.S.P.E.C.T...

I'll start off by saying that I suck at SF. I've played all iterations of it, and just haven't been compelled to really learn the controls. However, I understand the people that love the game. It has remained successful by (mainly) sticking to what the fans liked about the first few games.

MK has taken risks that have left fans of the original games disappointed. Thankfully MK is back on the right track and maybe it will become a more respected fighter once again. I doubt that the SF purists will consider MK a top-tier fighter, but that's their choice.

Thats what I also like is that NRS is willing to take risks and try new things even with Kharacter designs look at Shredder Sub-Zero I loved him but alot of people hate him thats just an example but they do try new things and ive always liked that about them

I've already talked about the "respect" aspect of this discussion, but let me go in a different direction.

I'm a big fighting game enthusiast. I'll try to learn all about and master new good ones when they come out. MK has already proven through its engine that it is worthy of being a tournament worthy fighter but in the end the game's balance between the characters will make or break it. "I" don't play unblanced fighting games. And as much as I love MK I would stop taking it as seriously if it was an unbalanced mess.
Thankfully I really doubt that will happen. But if it does, I'm dead serious about forgetting it and just sighing and thinking about what could have been.

I whole heartedly agree with this.

I hear a lot of the Capcom fans question why story and character development are important for fighting games. Here is my reduction ad absurdum counter argument. Would anyone be interested in playing a fighting game with the perfect fighting mechanics, flawless, but the fighters were for example, Big Bird from Sesame Street and the Pillsbury do-boy in a stage that is the Discovery Zone where kids used to play back in the early 90's? My point is that story and character are important otherwise its hard for people like me to have a major interest in investing time in the game. For example, thats why i haven't touched Marvel v Capcom 3 since it came out. There is no context for me to take seriously and invest time. I just literally don't care about the characters except for the x-men, and even then, it kills the mood when I have to fight a japanese school girl in this weird green machine thing as wolverine.

Same applies to Street Fighter but the charcters are better, hence why i'm halfway decent at the game. Soul caliber, I actually used to be tournament caliber for that game. The ambience, music, attitude of the game attracted me.
