Greetings all
Well I've been wanting to make this thread to have an idea of how all of you enjoy music in MK and overall videogames, so this goes long:
I've been playing videogames since the Atari 2600 and always found that I enjoyed music in games a lot, since the tiny melody in Moon Patrol, Double Dragon music in the arcades to the obvious great music in Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog games; I've could list dozens of games with great music but this is not the point. Now, MK1: When I heard the oriental themed music I thought it was awesome! perfect blend with the theme of the game. When MK2 arrived I just loved the music; goodness gracious me, the Living Forest music was so awesome and so accord with the arena that I thought that the composer was a genious. (I had a Sega Genesis so when the MK2 port hit the consoles I was very sad that they butchered the songs).
MK3: I loved the music too even though it had the techno groove added I think its okey due to the location of the game story.
Now: Since MK4 I think things started to go downhill regarding music and after that
MKDA, MKD and MKA just didn't had that special music anymore.
Don't get me wrong, Dan Forden did an excellent job regarding composition and complicated harmonic and melodic structures in those games but he lost the catchy and snappy feel that made you hum and whistle the melodies.. right now in my mind I don't have any memorable tune from the later games... and let's not even talk about MKvsDC.
Fast forward to 2011, 15 years later for me, thankfully I fullfilled my dream of becoming a musician and now I can understand the fine work mr Forden did in the first MK games.
For me it has to do with inspiration, it happens to every musician as the first albums are the best cuz they are inspired, they love music and it shows. But then everything changes to accomplish some schedule and stuff.
So, what are your expectations on MK9 ?? Unfortunately I haven't heard any music from this upcoming masterpiece and judging from the infamous annoucer voice, I'm having my doubts regarding how much effort they are putting to sound and music. I'm hoping they prove me wrong!!
Sorry for the extended intro to this thread.
Cheers!
