Mortal Kombat 1 General Discussion Media Thread

NRS are too busy bragging about MK1's 8 million sales on X to care about what anyone else thinks. Which is a very strange flex considering Khaos Reigns poor sale numbers was the reason WB pulled the plug on MK1's future DLC in the first place.
They can brag all they want. They are still less successful, than SF6 which sold less copies, than MK1.
Barely any player retention, no cultural interest, manufactured hype. Basically sales numbers is all they have. 8 million would be amazing for SP game. But MP? If the person buys the game, plays it for a bit and drops it, then you're doing something really wrong there.

I think this is just NRS way of advertising their worth to the future shareholders at Paramount and nothing more. The whole thing comes across like ''Please notice us Paramount/WB we sold a lot of copies of our game! Please ignore all those meanies online don't sell or close our studio!'' Sadly I'd doubt NRS are going anywhere anytime soon but it is amusing to watch them squirm.

That's a good point, but I think Paramount will still look at the books. You can sell those copies numbers all you want, but the books don't lie. At this point the movie has to sell like hotcakes, to keep MK IP attractive.

That MK2 movie screams DEI funded nonsense IMO. Unfortunately giant corporations like Paramount still endorse that stupid shit. At least the first movie besides Cole had each character look like their games counterpart. Jade doesn't look like anything from the past games yet casuals fans will still watch it. I doubt It's going to set the world on fire but I'll be very surprised if it doesn't turn a profit. I still think it will outperform that Street Fighter movie but I guess we’ll see.

Oh it is definitely making a profit. Question if that profit will be worth it.

Paramount got a new leadership and MK2 was filmed before Paramount acquired WB, so for all we know, they will just dump all DEI related stuff due contractual obligations and then clean house.

MK games never had longevity.
Yeah, but back in the day, they didn't try to be relevant in Esports. You need longevity for that to work. They got Single Player devs, make Multiplayer games.

They seriously need to change NRS for someone else or sell at least MK creative license, so others can make games. Not like consistency matters to them.

I doubt Paramount are that invested in the MK 2 movie since It's not their money but (like you said) WBs left overs before the merger. Paramount spent over 100 billion to basically pimp out Lord of the rings, Harry Potter and all the other much bigger properties/business WB owns. MK as a ip is a small fish in a giant ocean to them. Again, the best we can hope for is they don't start butchering the games division to make room for all this other dumb shit. I'd be very surprised if the games division somehow comes out of this merger unscathed.

To be honest Mileena and Kitana surpassed Sonya, as Sonya didn't have much to offer story wise. Mileena and Kitana have the entire sister/rivals thing going, which like Subzero/Scorpion, makes people more invested.
I've said this for a while and people will end up debating (or trying to) with "Bu-but...Sonya is the MK First Lady" ......as if any of that fucking matters.
The characters that they needed to get into that CGI trailer for MK1 to get people interested in getting pre-orders are Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana & Mileena......and Johnny Cage "leaked" via the JCVD pre-order.
Everyone else on that roster IS and HAS been swapped out in at least 1 game (or more) from MK9 through MK1.
No matter whose fucking feelings that actually hurts.
Sonya is one of my favorite characters, but they have completely butchered her with MKX/MK11. She is a complete waste of space now. But again, NRS has a talent with ruining characters.
I don't have any dislike or discontent for any of the characters, but people need to get it through their skulls and understand that if it isn't those "8 holy grail characters" that NRS has deemed must-haves then every other character isn't guaranteed just because they appeared in MK1 (Sonya & Kano), MKII (Jax) or MK3 / UMK3 (Kabal, Nightwolf, Sheeva and Jade).

As for TrueUnderdawg. Well you see... he has INSIDER information according to him. So he got told all of the sweet details. Which is true by the way, as we both actually share the same source. He is a 2nd cousin to Harvey the Rabbit.

Overall MK fandom is toxic, cause there is no unifying force and NRS favors Yes Men. We are left with this clickbait guys, that conjure smoke out of nothing.
Which is why I don't give a flying frog's fart for most of them.
Dynasty I can stomach because he's not necessarily a yes man, but for the most part whenever I hear of MK YouTubers my first thought is usually "Not these assholes again."
As far as I am concerned MK is finished as a franchise under NRS. Next MK has to deal with negative sentiment from both MK11 and MK1, so it has to be perfect at this point. Balls to the wall. Content, story and everything. Which it won't be. They cannot salvage the story of this New Era as they already run out of space to raise the stakes. "ONAGA HAS ARRIVED! OH NO! He is threatening... he is threatening... hmmm... fabric of reality? No, already had that. Timeline? No. MULTIVERSE! Oh wait we already had that, too. What is bigger, than the Multiverse?" so they better chance would be rebooting AGAIN, but nobody wants ANOTHER reboot, unless it was perfectly executed. Which it won't be.

To anyone saying "But you don't know! What if they do it right this time" Brother. Same people that made the decision that lead to MKX/MK11/MK1 story writing and gameplay decision (that got worse over time mind you), will be making the next MK. Exact same people. It would be insanity at this point to expect the exact same people to produce a different result.
I don't know if it's finished, but I do know that as far as the MK franchise goes and NRS (in general) goes that MK1 was the last vanilla day-1 game that I ever get from them.
MK1 got better........but it took them 7 months after launch in April for the Ermac update, so I have no reason to want to ever bother the next time around until the XL / Ultimate / Definitive / Your mom's asshole & the kitchen sink version comes out.
The only thing that would ever make me even consider getting another game from them at launch is if maaaaaaaaaaybe it was a TMNT Tournament Fighters type of game or DC vs TMNT (like the cross-over comics).
There's a snowball's chance in hell of that ever happening, though, so I'll wait out the 10~11 months until that final version is out for $40 and just do that. I don't play online, anyways, and mainly play against friends so I'm in no rush for that next launch.
While I only speak for myself, I'm sure that I'm also not alone on that.

Harry Potter and LOTR are some of the BIGGEST movie franchises.
