Graphics and gameplay

Why are the graphics worse than Deception or Deadly Aliance? I don't get that. It might still be fun to play but I don't get why the graphics get worse. What about the gameplay? I havent played Shaolin Monks and I know it has those high flying combos, is it kool? It jsut doesnt look fun. Its the oppisite of the rest of the MK games. Don't get me wrong, this game and Shaolin Monks could be really fun. I'm just not used to it.

I'm definately going to give this game a shot. It looks like I might not like some things, but I could me completely wrong. Maybe I need to go rent SM before I judge it.

This is my first post on these forums also. I haven't really been to any MK forums (even though its my favorite series).

I'd say the reason you think the graphics look bad is because all you're seeing is screenshots....I said somewhere else (earlier today too, I think) that screenshots have low quality, just because there's no reason for them to have high quality. Their purpose is just to show what's in the game, not necessarily how flashy it is.

As for the combos etc, I really wish I could help ya, but I still haven't gotten the chance to play Shaolin Monks.

Alright, I'll give that to you, the current Deception/Deadly Alliance screens do look better, but lets not forget that these are early shots of Armageddeon, and the game doesn't come out for another 8 1/2 months or so

exactly midway has enough time to change the whole game with that much time in their hands before it is actually available. Still i'm pissed it's so long. This game will be top 5 of all fighting games

It's really easy to tell these are alpha/beta screens. Notice there are no terrain effects in place and no shading or detail in the costumes or terrain textures. Wait until E3 and we'll likely see more high quality screens (people will probably have newer costume designs as well). Waiting and watching is all we can do at this point, there isn't quite enough information to make drastic conclusions as of yet.

- Every screenshot that is publically released and posted are either mediocre scans, or medium-sized screenshots plagued with jpeg compression. Believe me, crap jpeg compression does make a huge difference.

- For the screenshots that do actually look like crap, it's probably a screen from the Konquest mode. It is using the Shaolin Monks engine, so the texture sizes are smaller than usual and polygons are dumbed down.

- Not to mention the screenshots were taken from the game engine running on a computer, they're not screenshots coming from a HDTV. Both machines output things differently.

Come on Topic Creator.

When they were first shoing pics of MK: DA they looked... Like Crap!

Yet when it came out it was better than we expected. The Konquest mode looks good in one shot of MK:A yet another it looks like crap!

In one picture the graphics look awesome.

I assume you are a newb because graphics aren't everything...

Gamplay, and story are. (except for FPS games)

yeah and, you must play halo 2. because thier fan base calls everyone newbs. Did I say that's all that matters; even once? NO! Go back to playing with your noob combos and getting modded

Since you're both new here, I'm going to warn you now. Don't turn good threads like this into flame wars with your petty arguments.

is it just me or does it look like they are using the Shaolin Monks engine for the fighting part as well?

I was looking at the 150 pics on GI's site, and it seems like there is not much difference graphically between konquest mode and the 1v1 fights. I heard they were using the SM engine for the konquest mode. Has anyone confirmed they are using the DA and deception engines for MK7?

I fully agree

In short don't judge a book by its cover... or in gamer's terms, don't judge games on half-assed pictures. 8)

Uh I play a wide variety of games. (Halo 2 , SSBM, FF, Dragon quest/Warrior/etc.)

I wasn't trying to be offensivve its just... Graphics aren't all that matter. BTW on this site I'm a newb here. On the games I'm not. (I basically know everything about MK, except for info not provided by the creators such as number of pixels needed to make Scorpion) (next time I look like I'm flamming I'll put a warning so you know sorry)

I apologise for that, but everywhere I go everyone go's " ZOMG, no good graphics? This sucks!" Crap really irritates me. (I don't care as long as the game pleases me then I will play it no matter if its just something liek graphics, and or etc. )

But again I think the pics were just a little choppy since most are. I'm assured they will at least be standered at worst. (On page two of the GI section on it it shows Kintoro *SP* that looks pretty good in 3D along with Rain)

I mean when has Midway ever let us down on any of the fighting MK games. (non-adventure) Ok so a little on MK4 but otherwise never. (MK:DA a little but it was still fun)

My take on this would be, graphics wouldn't matter if the gameplay greatly surpasses expectations (aka revolutionary), then the possibly "bad graphics" could be tolerated. However, in general, graphics are a pretty big factor that goes into impressions of a game.

Okay, so I lied.
Shaolin Monks is not revolutionary, however the gameplay is great and we can tolerate the mediocre graphics. But games like, say Quake 4, if the graphics were seriously dumbed down, I'm pretty sure you'd get a pretty crappy impression of how good Quake 4 is. But see, Quake 4 has fairly impressive graphics with a very familiar gameplay, and it ended up being a fairly good game.

Conclusion? Graphics count. Only ignored if gameplay surpasses.

Whether graphics matter or not, I say wait until some better official screens of gameplay and such at E3 then make your judgements. It's still far too early to think about these things.

By the way, Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon all use Criterion's Renderware graphic engine. And yes, Criterion is responsible for the Burnout series. I'm thinking Midway should probably squeeze more out of the engine, I mean, Burnout looks amazing and runs at a blazing 60 fps 8)
