He is the champion of a tournament that no longer exists.
The tournament ceases to be relevant when they go 5 games without mentioning it.
Except when Shao Kahn decides otherwise like in MKII
The 50 year rule still applies.

It doesn't matter. Mortal Kombat should center around the Mortal Kombat tournament.
No more invasions or takeovers, every major event in MK from now on should be centered around a martial arts tournament.
Liu Kang isn't a necessary character. Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion are though. Johnny Cage is my favorite hero and I'm glad he lived. I think Kai and Shujinko have a lot of potential to be the new Liu Kang and Kung Lao.
Actually, Liu Kang is more necessary than both Sub-Zero and Scorpion as far as the storyline goes. Liu Kang is the champ and is a vital char to defeating the big bads in MK as he has done in the past since his skills are pretty much unmatched in earthrealm and apparently Outword.
Scorpion and Sub Zero have their own separate agenda that really does not have to do with the main plot, tbh. Now Sub Zero(kuai) helps to defend earthrealm, as does Cage, Sonya, etc. But Liu is champ and its ultimately going to be up to him to save earth.
So u saying Liu isnt necessary is totally false.
As for Kai and Shujinko?

I have no issue with Kang being the main char and beating everyone, that is his purpose. Just like with Goku, Superman, Spiderman, or any other main hero.My thing with Liu Kang is that DA is my favorite MK game out of them all. Liu Kang dying shocked me, and in a good way. I didnt know who would save Earthrealm. It left a void, but that void allowed so many of the other characters, who were just support, to step up and become more prominent. It also allowed for some good new characters to come along in Kenshi, Li Mei, and Bo Rai Cho (yes I said Bo Rai Cho).
So to me I like Liu Kang, but not in the spotlight stealing role he was in. He had become the Superman of Mk. He was undefeatable and I didn't like that. Honestly an anti-hero role, or a mentor role would be great for him. At some point he had to step down as main hero though. Since he couldn't age as a result of winning MK, they had to kill him.
In all honesty it made Shang Tsung and Quan Chi seem like a big threat as well whereas they had played second fiddle to Kahn or Shinnok in the past.
Basically in a nutshell, I like Liu Kang, but do not think he is needed and his absence actually allows for more growth of many other characters because it seems like the good guys all work together to defeat the big bad instead of just being support for Kang who always beats the big bad.
If you were the creator of MK, it wouldn't have even been released.
