DLC - NRS getting lazy with quality/details?

skarlet not having an alternate costume isn't as big of a deal as the rest of your points unless you're playing skarlet mirror match. otherwise all good points.

I still hate that Smoke had to die. All that work revamping him and saving him from becoming a cyborg, and you still kill him off?

DLC costs time and money and NR does not have infinite resources (no developer has). You want a character to have some dialogue? Gotta hire/pay a voice actor. Want more costumes? Designer needs more time/

Keep in mind this is all extra in terms of dlc. The major/important things in fighting games are stuff like a character's moves and their properties and that's what the developers spend most of their time/money on. For example: Kenshi could have some really kick-ass character specific dialogue, a dozen cool costumes etc but what does it matter if he ends up having a crap move set?

Unless you want to pay an extra 5 bucks (developers are not a charity!) and wait a couple more weeks (potentially months) for your character dlc, you're going to have to drop your expectations a little bit.

Depends ..... let's say that MK 2011 sold 1 million copies ..... let's speculate numbers here :

half million fans decide to buy Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain and 4th character .... total, 20$ ......

If all the half million pay for that, you have, DLC profit of ..... 10 millions dollars ?

For develop extra half dozen lines of dialogue for each one, with an alternate costume for 4 characters, plus spots in Nekropolis and some stats, so, NRS could spend so much on that ? 2 million dollars ? lol !!

Actually on this point, the screams/grunts of Skarlet are done by the same voice actress who voiced Sonya. I'm sure NRS had the time and money to tack on 30 more seconds to utilize that actress' talents to create/record a two second battle cry. Besides, if you look at the game's credits, one person can do multiple character voices, so hiring someone is a moot point. Considering the intros are mere seconds, money/time is certainly not an issue with WB's financial war chest behind the scenes.

Skarlet's alternate costume was out there in the pre-release videos, so it was planned. Was it canned due to time constraints? Quality issues? Thought of as another way to make more money or get more publicity? Who knows, but whatever the reason, it seems like the development team is getting lazy; a perception if anything.

While I agree this is all "extra", it is and it isn't since they were promoting DLC before the game's official release so it's not like WB said, "Oh hey, come up with more characters...now and you've got a month per character." after the game was released.

In the end, all I am saying is, the DLC seems to be rushed out the door quickly like unwanted in-laws just to make a quick buck which is a disservice to the game and fans. Do I expect perfection? Absolutely not and thank God the characters have great skill/move sets and are balanced, but given the time and effort they put into the game overall, I expected a little more polish with DLC to make it as seamless as possible. Especially in lieu of the fact that the imperfections are rampant, albeit not game-play-affecting, one would hope NRS would correct them.

I just fear that DLC will make this game a little less shiny and new, if you get my drift.

I think as a character Skarlet is really well designed, which is the most important and hardest thing. She feels balanced with a unique move set. It's a shame she isn't as well handled in regards to her out of match presence, but it could have been worse. I do hope this is something they rectify with the next few releases though, at least providing a way to view stats and endings.

They may not have promoted any dlc before the release, but that doesn't mean they were not pressured by WB. They very well could have. But ya, I can agree with you. I would assume they feel okay about rushing things cuz they can patch it later.

LOL @ getting -Repped for having a difference of opinion on Cyber Sub-Zero.
I forgot that this is TRMK, and I'm not allowed to have an opinion.

Heh, I remember being neg repped twice by the same person for 2 of my responses in the same thread (it was for the same reason, too; apparently I need to "shut up my pathetic fanboy crap").

How is that even possible?
I thought you had to spread rep around before you repped that same person again.

-Safeties disabled, sickening fanboy obsession engaged-

The Nekropolis slots, you definitely have point with and it's what a good 70% of users think as well... while the other 30% just doesn't give a sh*t.

I am totally in that 30% bracket. When I had this game on Xbox I had an OCD obsession with unlocking everything. Now I could give a rats ass about the Nekropolis. I'm either in training mode or online mode, that's it. If I want to see a character's ending, I'll go to the Mortal Kombat wikia.

Though I completely agree with you that aesthetics should not be the primary concern for playing a great game, they are and always will be the secondary attraction. When you love a character in Mortal Kombat and have played a thousand matches using said character, you're eyes and imagination tire of seeing the same 'ol thing. Hence the love of alternate costumes. This love of aesthetics is actually a major driving force behind many games such as MMOs. Technically we could all be playing as Boon's stick figures as long as the gameplay was intact, but where some are auditory driven, many are predominantly visually-driven and love to SEE many flavors of their favorite characters.

Then you got to figure what happens when that 2nd or 3rd costume starts to get boring too. It's like an endless cycle, and if you allow your eyes to strain everytime you pick the same costume (or two) over and over again, then eventually you'll never have fun with that character and have to move on. When I'm in a match I hardly have time to admire the aesthetics of my character, the level back round, or the guy I'm fighting for that matter. Albeit the level designs and backrounds are amazing, I can live without seeing chains in the backround of Kahn's arena, or seeing Skarlet's (or my own character's) backround. I've played 100 games since the DLC release. I've picked MK3 Sektor everytime, and I'm still not tired of seeing it. :D

They think that us, fans, can be 100% satisfied and accept, smiling, all these flaws, some minor, some serious / severe. OMG !!

You don't like it, don't buy it. You are perpetually forcing yourself to 'complete' the game by downloading these characters, and then accuse NRS of thinking of us all as stupid, self-satisfying fans (like me I guess you can point out) when you feel like their DLC doesn't quite deliver on it's promise. Again, I could care less about costumes and nekropolis spots, the only thing I want them to fix is the online coding and lag issues online. If they can make all the characters balanced, then that's the only other thing I care about.

MK vs DC was the turning point. Say what you will, it was a markedly better game quality-wise (forget the lack of gore, online issues etc) than say, MK Armageddon. WB saw the value in MK and knew it could still be a success if under the right management and used MK vs DC as a test bed on what "could" become of the franchise in terms of quality.

MK vs DC was garbage. There should be no such things as MK - the gore, and the fact that they tried to mix a super hero universe (which in my opinion has no place in the MK universe) just shows that they wanted to cash in on the franchise name rather than make a quality fighter. Thus MK 9 showed up and I couldn't be happier.

The cash flow doesn't work that way, unfortunately. The publisher (WB) gets a pretty huge chunk of money, and when NRS gets their piece of the profit, they don't just pay everything off in one big chunk of money. xD Like "Oh, we need to fix these problems. Here's a 2 million dollar check from our DLC profits." Everything gets evenly distributed over time, to every employee. That's why things get fixed over time and not all at once.

Agreed....:D

I've had people do that to me. Just PM a Moderator and let them know, and if someone is neg repping you for a stupid, immature reason, they'll take care of it.

The lack of an alternate for Skarlet doesn't bother me as much as no Nekropolis spot. There's just no excuse for that as far as I'm concerned. I'm also peeved she has no victory pose in Test Your Luck either. I don't mind she doesn't talk as it fit her personality well imho. Kenshi and Rain I'm sure will be the same sadly. I really do hope they get patched either via update of in one of the compatibility packs.

Some of you are never satisfied.

The online is (for the most part) fixed. We're getting free alternate costumes (save for the initial bundle). We're getting DLC characters in a timely manner, and with a good timeline. What more do you want/need?

Who freaking cares if Skarlet doesn't have an alternate costume? That doesn't detract from her story, or her fighting techniques. I don't care if CSZ has an alternate costume or not, seeing as though I don't even use CSZ.

The big problem with the game was the online. It has now, for the most part, been fixed. We're still getting a good amount of content, and there might be even more content in store beyond the summer season. Quit whining and complaining, and enjoy the freaking game. This minor crap doesn't matter in the grand scheme.
