8:17 AM CST -
Earlier this morning, the WB Games' Chicago game studio was relaunched officially as NetherRealm Studios, just as was discovered last April. You can find their new logo and home over at www.netherrealm.com. The page is pretty basic right now but it has an awesome new logo which you can see below.

Along with the new studio name is the information that ninth Mortal Kombat game will be a reboot of the franchise. Basically they are rebooting the series to re-establish "the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style." Here is more on the game from WB's Press Release:
The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series’ mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

The game will also feature some new gameplay features like Tag Team fighting, and all back in the familiar 2D style gameplay like the first three Mortal Kombat games. Not to mention what will likely be the most gruesome fatalities ever seen in a Mortal Kombat game.

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”

Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game modes as well as the most extensive online experience ever seen in a fighting game. Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode” or compete against another team online.

The game will be released in March 2011 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 systems. Here is a look at it's awesome trailer:

Download Versions:
Mobile H.264 Video (iPhone/Android/etc) (14.3MB)
H.264 720p HD Video (36.1MB)
H.264 Uncompressed 720p HD Video (555MB)

WB Games also launched TheMortalKombat.com as the new home to this new game. Currently it just links to the Facebook fan page but I expect that to change as E3 gets closer. The Mortal Kombat Facebook page has also posted a high resolution copy of the game's new logo. It's a whole new darker stone dragon logo, along with a flat red MORTAL KOMBAT type underneath it. This is the logo:

Yup, I'm sold completely just off that trailer! Finally, back to basics and it looks killer. The character designs and levels look so good - I can't wait until March hahaha

Great god. So it's MK given the SFIV treatment then. Well, it looks amazing that's for sure. Maybe Tim might even like it lol. A bit annoyed about the release date though, was hoping to see it by Christmas.

720p HD download link is now active on the story. Edit: This 720p version is highly compressed. Working on finding a better source.

I'm not bothered enough to take stills of the trailer. Sub-Zero almost looks the same. He has the same mask from MKvsDCU. But of course, final revisions always change just like MKvsDCU. Thanks for the HD, Jeff!

On the plus side, guess who's birthday falls in march! I hope it's a nice big expensive collector's edition!

Bloody spectacular! I recognize some of those arenas . The name Mortal Kombat implies it's a reboot to me, but they have arenas from MKII and I thought I saw Cyrax too. So maybe it encompasses the first 3 games.

Kira is filling in for Sonya on the classic arena with Sonya and Kano chained on. 3D on a 2D plain, I'm happy they kept the 3D at this level and that traidition attaires are back in most cases. Though... Ouch... I'm GLAD they didn't show the ending of that Kung Lao fatality. Edit: And not to mention they've timed it JUST right due to the hype with the movie pitch... When all eyes are on MK.
June 10th, 2010 10:49 AM CST - Kurtis Stryker
I like the sound of the new game modes. Co-op arcade? Not bad. I'm also glad that Sektor will be in the game; I will likely use him a lot. But, the whole reboot deal bores me to death; the series is just going backwards story-wise, and bringing out the same characters yet again. There's no progression whatsoever. Nightwolf? Fail. Hopefully, this game does a better job of keeping me interested than MK vs. DCU. Within 3 months, after unlocking a bunch of achievements, I ended up selling MK vs. DCU.
June 10th, 2010 11:05 AM CST - Nic-V
MY GOD! This is awesome man! Thank you MK team, this shall be awesome! :D
June 10th, 2010 11:08 AM CST - docholiday
I'd think that most likely the Short Film people some how knew this was coming and coincided their release with this... or just assumed they'd show something at E3. Either way these last couple of days has me so amped up for MK that I might explode in a fatality kiss sort of way.
June 10th, 2010 11:18 AM CST - Umon Daisuke
Look promising so hopefully it'll deliver. But the release date isn't the greatest given that Gears 3 at the very least is released then, and possibly Killzone 3. Capcom nailed SFIV's release date last year since it was the only good thing in Feb.

June 10th, 2010 12:15 PM CST - Snow
The only problem I have with this is when it cuts to Shao Kahn in the gameplay part, his costume doesn't look like the one in the cinematic. Instead it looks like the same one from MK vs DCU. and yes, there IS a difference. Still, I'm so friggin' excited! Lol, watching the cinematic part reminds me of the animated trailer I made for my MK series, Mortal Kombat: A New Beginning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VazsdzoIQiY

Hey! I'm new here.. Anyways I have one question. They said that they are going back to the old 2d style.... From what I've seen in this trailer, I don't see much 2D... Of course I can be wrong and be looking at the wrong thing. So can someone please explain that to me?
June 10th, 2010 1:04 PM CST - Jinko
First of all, welcome to the forums. The clues are simple really. 1. Take a good look at the arenas. 2. There are no signs of sidestepping whatsoever. We are fairly sure thy WB took the SFIV approach and as of now, it seems to be a possitive one.
June 10th, 2010 1:07 PM CST - Nasty_Freak
In tag team mode, I can't wait to put Mileena, Kitana, and Jade together. I just saw the trailer in playstationlife.net and it was the BEST!!!!!! I want to play as Mileena and I might even want to learn how to play as Kung Lao and do that Buzzsaw fatality. Btw, Johnny Cage is HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOT!!!!
June 10th, 2010 1:08 PM CST - The Bizkit
Thank you, I figured by 2d style they were talking more than graphics... I automatically assumed more like SFIV in terms of graphics, to be more cartooney.

Wow, that is probably the best MK trailer I've ever seen. The 2D mechanics look brilliant and a return to what made MK great! Tag-team is a brilliant idea and I'm really keen to see how it plays :D Character-wise, the roster is looking brilliant already - think I like every character seen so far Hopefully we'll end up with a decent amount, somewhere around 20 - 30 would be cool with me. Loving the old-school arena's too! So can't wait for this game!!

June 10th, 2010 3:55 PM CST - Nasty_Freak
Did you guys know that Kira was tied up in the chains in Shao Kahn's Battle Area, replacing Sonya? You can see her towards the end of the video behind Kung Lao after he does his Buzzsaw fatality. Speaking of the Buzzsaw fatalty, I hope more fatalities are nastier like that. I am definitely crossing my fingers for Mileena to be able to eat up her victim's from between the legs to the face while the enemy is laying on the ground. (I usually think about Kung Lao as the victim in this fatality idea I have for some reason.) Also, I have a strong feeling Jade will return. If she does, I hope she has a fatality where she'd shove her Bojutsu in an enemy's butt, going through the mouth I (usually think about Stryker and Johnny Cage as the victims in this fatality idea of Jade.) Overall, this is what I'm pretty much waiting for. It is like Shaolin Monks but A LOT better. I also hope they have create a fighter mode. My favorite characters that are confirmed: Mileena (in the trailer) Kitana Sonya Johnny Cage (in the trailer) Favorite fatality in the trailer: Kung Lao's Buzzsaw (I hope more of my favorite females have nasty fatalities such as this one.) The characters I'm hoping to be in the roster are: Jade (With her Bo and Razorang) Tanya (With her boomerang and Kobu Jutsu Tonfa Blade.) Li Mei (With her Kunlun Dao.) Nitara (With her Kama.) Sindel Kano (With his knives.) Sareena (With her Daggers and Demon Fang.) New Characters

Game looks great so far! If i was there i would give every one a pat on the back, Nice work! Praise 1. Love the remix of the old arenas. 2. Thanks for bringing Johnny back - I DIG HIS NEW INK! 3. Mechanics/Timing/Combos look hot! Concerns 1. Music not so hot - it's an important detail 2. Could give a little tune up to the fighting stance Johnny cage, Sub Zero, and Night Wolf all looked the same or very close. Maybe make them more unique/dynamic for all characters. Just my 2 cents If i could pre-order it now i would
June 10th, 2010 5:22 PM CST - Snow
did anyone else notice the fact that Shao Kahn looks the SAME as he did in MK vs DCU? If you look at when it starts showing off the characters at 00:37, you'll notice that it's the same costume! the only reason I'm only pointing that out is because there's nothing else to point out! it's almost FLAWLESS!

Its nice to know your not ignored when you point something out in a thread... So someone else posts the same thing believing to have been the first to point it out to everyone else. It kind shows you didn't read the thread. >_< Excuse the half rant, its 23:34 and my mind is telling me "sleep".

Some dreams do come true. I'm gonna go out on a limb and claim this as my pick for best game of 2011. =P Just a bit of a wild guess, but that looks like some sort of new spin on Brutalities, Daisuke. I hope they do something with more detail like that than the needlessly gigantic combo they were in Trilogy.

The only thing I don't like is that it looks like it's gonna have dashing instead of running. (The part where Kung Lao is chasing an airborne victim shows him doing a lounge.) Dunno if I like that.
June 10th, 2010 8:38 PM CST - DCR
I'd prefer a run button over "tap forward twice" myself. I don't know why, but when a dash move is input that way, I'm just not very likely to use it.

O.M.G!!!! Finally we get a glimpse of the game we've all been waiting for, and I must say I am beyond impressed with the way this game is looking. I am loving the combination of 2D and 3D merged into one, the combos look hella awesome, the graphics are stunning, and the characters shown thus far in the trailer look amazing. I know a lot of people are wondering where Scorpion, Kitana, Liu Kang, and others are, and my guess is the NetherRealm studios MK team is going to be revealing them overtime through new in game footage or high resolution renders the same way they revealed the MK vs DC roster. I'm looking forward to finding out about the new in game mechanics, by the looks of things they did not adapt the free fall Kombat from MK vs DC, but that shot of Johnny Cage landing blows on Sub-Zero that actually show up like an X-Ray, showing the internal damage being done, look like an updated version of close-kombat to me, that or (as someone has already stated) an updated version of the Brutality finishers. I really hope that they have given Reptile his human form back for this game, his raptor like appearance in last few titles hasn't been my cup of tea. My only complaint at this point would be the release date, because I was so hoping to be able to play the game at least sometime this year, so I'm kind of bummed about that. March 2011 seems so far away, especially when you're waiting impatiently for something as awesome as MK to be released. Nevertheless I'm sure they will be fine tuning and making the game look its very best during the time period between now and the release date. I can't wait for this game! And I can't wait to see what Kitana looks like!

I counted a total of 13 characters in the trailer. Beginning with Shao Khan, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Kameleon, Nightwolf, Mileena, Sektor, and Kung Lao. Then in the pit background stage at approximately :58 secs you can clearly see Deagon and Reiko fighting. Then in Khan's Arena stage at 1:00 minute you get a glimps of Li Mei, and then at 1:06 minutes a shot of Kira.

More to the point, it'll be competing directly with Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which is perhaps the worst thing it could possibly do. And whoever mentioned Li Mei and Khameleon, I think you must be sorely mistaken. I can't see them anywhere. I can see a really generic looking woman behind Kira, but that's it. Good spot on Daegon and Reiko though. With seemingly random characters popping up in the backgrounds, it seems to me that there might be a lengthy konquest mode, with the character models used in that being re-used in stages, like in MKD. And using characters like Daegon makes me think it won't be a reboot. But even if it is, that could be the 'unforeseen event' at the end of MKA, a time-slip back to the first tournament, or going by the MKII arenas, the initial stages of the war, in an attempt to change the course of history. but who can say? EDIT: If this is a reboot completely seperate to the other MK games, we're going to have to start numbering the universes like in Marvel and DC. There's the mainstream series universe, the new series universe(sort of like 'Ultimate' from Marvel), the MK vs. DC Universe... er... universe, the Shaolin Monks Universe, plus the films, comics, Conquest and Defenders all have seperate continuities. Things are getting compli... sorry, komplikated.

I'm hoping they form the roster based on moves instead of simply storyline. As good as the story may be, MK was never popular because of the story, or any game for that matter.

Honestly, I have the opposite reaction to the release date. It is a while to wait, sure, but consider that this could essentially be the first MK game ever not to be rushed out because the publisher is in the red and needs their big cash cow out on store shelves. This could be the first MK game ever that contains every last detail the creators intend it to have, and the first without more lost concept art with the depressing tagline of "we wanted to put this in, but it was cut due to time constraints".
June 11th, 2010 7:02 PM CST - Tim Static
I do hope they do a beta, etc kinda thing. sorta like what they did in the arcade. Release MK9 Rv1.0 to BETA. Use it for offline play only. Rv1.1, with any fixed issues found. THen after Rv1.2, take it online. Find any glitches with gameplay and networking, release Rv2.0. do a couple revisions testing online things, gameplay, then in March release Rv3.0. and just because 3.0 is released doesnt mean anything. Giving it to the masses can result in finding all sorts of problems. So take it and patch as it goes, fixing issues etc. And of course release any DLC along the way as well, testing it too.

What? Johnny Cage has the HOTTEST look in the MK trailer. At least his body and his pants, which makes his @$$ really sexy. Now Mileena is HHHHHHHHOT for a girl. However, I'm expecting Jade to be even sexier than Mileena once she appears in this game.
June 12th, 2010 7:27 AM CST - Eks
Cage looks dorky with the spandex pants and the tat looks like an afterthought. Perhaps some black and blue, karate-style pants would be a little more modern, but then he'd look like he was biting Kang's style. Other than his appearance, I don't see anything wrong with him, tho. I wonder if they're gonna have the other Pits, too?

I agree about Scorpions Lair stage. Considering how nice the Cathedral stage was in MK3, I can only imagine how beautiful it would look in 3D. The Graveyard and Belltower would also be really nice. If anything, I'd like to see just about all of the old school MK stages remade. The only ones I don't really care about are the portal stages (red in MK2 and blue in MK3), the Armory (it's interesting, but it's been redone many times), Shao Kahn's cave (MK3) and Sky Tower (MK2).

Acewildcat here. Creator of Supermans Inf in MKDC and legendary MK warrior. My list of failures for this upcoming MK release: Nightwolf - Fail. Johnny Cage - Fail (unless he brings back the nut cracker then pass) Large character roster featuring previous characters - Fail. (Midway just did this in Armageddon.) No Blood - Fail (I am worried that I seen very little blood in the trailer. Perhaps they will show the beginning and then black out the violent parts as they did with the joker fatality in MKDC after boon promised there will be blood.) Cartoony looks and hyper fast gameplay - Fail. (Thats why we all bought street fighter) This is NOT a "reinvention or reboot" - Fail. (Its obvious, WB now calls the shots. this is no reboot. Its a rehash.) Conclusion: MK had a chance to win back the hearts of the original fans with a dark and gritty reboot. but chose instead to go back 10 steps and repackage an old game. The creators of the recently released Mortal Kombat movie teaser trailer should be applauded for putting in the only real creative efforts. In fact, ed boon should fire the current staff and hire the people involved in the creation of that movie trailer. THE END.

There's always one. Fine, don't buy it. I'll be enjoying it. And the lack of gore in the trailer is probably to protect the eyes of curious youngsters. And besides, a lack of blood doesn't make a game any worse. Otherwise, we wouldn't have all bought Street Fighter IV, would we?

Legendary warrior? Bahahaha. That's some corny shit right there, especially for someone who likes boring, slow-paced fighting. Excessive blood is no more realistic than cartoony looks. You don't regularly see blood spurting everywhere in real life fights, ya know. This game isn't being done to appease the 3D MK fans, it's being done to appease us old-school, 2D fans. Don't like it? Don't play it. That's what we've been doing with the MKs from the last decade.

It sucks we have to wait until next year. They said a while back that this would be ready for the holiday season 2010.

There been changesw don't forget... They've actaully taken a more realistic timespan this time if you ask me we can argue on the dates timing, but ultimately theres no rush excuse this time.

The date changing from the earlier hinted at Holiday season to post-holiday is a good move if you ask me, more time for polishing up the game. Also by the time we were hearing Holiday they probably had a new date already.

That is sweet! I watch that trailer all the time. I'm really looking forward to the Story Mode, Co-op Arcade and Tag-Team battles. I also want to know more about the story, the voice acting and dialogue. I'm glad tht the game comes out next year, there should be no excuse for an incomplete, and unpolished game.

I've watched this trailer like...8 times frame by frame since I got back from Japan (what bad timing eh?) 2 days ago and I haven't seen a single thing I don't like. I love Johnny's new tat, all the outfits, the new bonebreakers, the new fatalities...there's nothing this announcement didn't get right. Not one thing. Tag kombat, 2D arenas, stage fatals, tons of specials. I'm so excited even after days of simmering down. I just can't stop laughing manically.
