6:35 PM CST -
Just earlier today we got concept art release of Metropolis from Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but now we have the man of steel himself. Midway has just sent us a high quality render of Superman himself for our readers.

Check out more coverage of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, including an in-depth interview with Ed Boon and the full theatrical trailer available in 720p HD in our Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe GameRealm.

Sweet! We got a render after all! I see now why they released the Metropolis art. It's this one's backdrop!

I gotta say, it'd be nice if the DC guys at least gave the MK team some creative freedom on the designs. If you view this render out of context, it sure doesn't give you the impression that it's from a Mortal Kombat game. I understand people wanting the designs to be faithful, but it looks like these characters are going to stick out like a sore thumb.

True, but this isnt a mortal kombat game only. Its a mix of DC and MK. So the DC side isnt going to have a MK look to it, nor should it.

I'm sorry, but that render is crap. He looks like a Ken doll.
May 20th, 2008 1:17 AM CST - Goraka
Finding it hard to get excited about this. I mean, we knew he was gonna be in there, right? Same with Scorpion, but at least with Scorpion we got a new look to analyze. At least I know that the Superman Action figure I bought 2 weeks ago to go with my MK figs is accurate enough.
May 20th, 2008 2:14 AM CST - Glamador
Now that I look at it...he does have a plastic look about him that Sub and Bats definitely didn't have in the trailer. I really hope he doesn't have that action-figurey style about him when he's in-game. My friend had a good suggestion however on how to make him better. Keep the costume, but make the colors darker and more faded. Tell ya what, I'll photoshop a concept and put it up here and in the artwork section to describe what I mean.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not asking for complete bastardizations of the costumes, but would darkening up the outfits a bit really alienate the DC fans so much?
May 20th, 2008 2:43 AM CST - Goraka
They did it on Superman Returns and that was generally well recieved. And in the 90s Batman did have a really dark grey suit too.
May 20th, 2008 3:15 AM CST - DCR
Doesn't seem like anyone really had a problem with Batman being all-black in the movies, either, unless I missed something. I still think an all-black costume would work better for him in this game.
May 20th, 2008 5:37 AM CST - zub_one
I agree, darkening up the colors a bit might make superman look a little bit better. It doesn't really matter to me though whether Bats would be wearing an all black suit or a dark gray one, he still looks pretty menacing to me.

If there are alternative cossys, I hope they let the MK be a bit more creatative. :-/
May 20th, 2008 8:02 AM CST - Ruckus216
yea cus wit the some wat bright colors, supa man looks kinda "happy" for a darker, gritter mortal kombat. right?
May 20th, 2008 9:29 AM CST - RAVENSFAN
Whatever the case may be, either plastic looking or too cartoonish I cant wait to stab him in the chest with Scorpions spear for wearing his red panties over his spandex
May 20th, 2008 9:51 AM CST - dcastrod
Guys, come on, its just a render, with no real lighting from the background, even the background seems to have the same tone.. look, it has to be darker in the game.. with just a little more darkness, it looks a bit better… don’t you think?

The graphics of this game will be good. This game is what I have been waiting for. There aren't a lot of DC comics related video games lately.

Well, it looks very good honestly none the less. I noticed nobody commented yet on his costume details such as the wrinkles, spandex-ness of his costume. Kind of reminds me of Brandon Routh in some ways I think most people all around have to realize that for one, the MK team CAN'T just do whatever they want with designs...they need DC's approval as far as the DC guys go, they can do whatever they wish with their owns guys MK characters but DC's, not so much. I was saying this on MKO because a lot of fans "hated on Superman's look" umm that's how he looks lol, he's not going to look "evil" don't some of you guys know what Superman's about? lol Besides chances are and knowing MK there will be alternates, he'll have his Black/darker costume so that should please a lot more people...hopefully the DC/Superman haters out there but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one lol I don't see this plasticness some people refer to, he looks like Superman the pose, boyscoutish look etc. I follow DC as well as MK and he always has that "look" to him, I mean he's posing as the world's#1 super hero while Scorpion is an undead spectre of course he's going to look a bit "statue like" but not plastic lol.... He's Superman afterall
May 20th, 2008 6:03 PM CST - Angel
The most evil version of Superman was Superman Prime in the recent "countdown" arc. He was one of the courses of the DC universe being redone (supposedly) into its current 52 universes.

There are no wrinkles that i can see. They are his veins. And yes we know this but what you're not getting is that this render looks like crap. He looks plastic. I don't want a whole new superman, i want something that doesn't look like last gen. The arenas are beautiful. I even think Scorpion looks subpar (not a word, oh well.) They are no using the Unreal to it's fullest. I mean the Gears characters look amazing! And that's with a first person shooter, they can do way better with a fighting game, so they need too.

The thing about the Unreal engine is it works best on surfaces like metals and such, it handles them well. Most of the characters in the game have armour on, and it handles them well. After metal, its details, it does that brilliantly too. Trouble with Superman is his cossy is low detail and aside from the belt if you have it, he has no metal. To me, they've done a better job then I thought, only because I know how difficult it is to get the room in to go a little heavy on Superman's cossy. (He almost always wears that same outfit... :-/ ) Things have been different for his cousin, Supergirl, there is some room for experiementation and she usually has slightly better costume designs for that reason. (she can have blue skirt, red skirt, hotpants, long boots, short boots, flat heels, heels, belt buckle, no buckleGloves, no gloves, headband, no band, doesn't even need the blue uniform if you look at others with the name other then Kara).

Well keeping one costume isn't such a bad thing as long as it was a good costume to begin with. But some on...Superman is basic basic basic. He has basic powers, like somebody just made up a man...but super. His costume could have been designed by a five-year-old. Blue spandex, undies on the outside, boots and a belt. Ridiculous. Now Batman, THERE's are good costume. GREY spandex, undies on the outside, boots, a COOL belt, and a cape with a hood! Yep, totally better.

Superman's logo changes more then his outfit... http://www.supermanhomepage.com/images/miscellaneous/s-evolution-tb.html In the fandom of DC they are making more fuss over the "S" shield for Chris Reeves' superman being used then anything. To them also, this is the best rendered version of Superman that has been produced so their naturally thrilled. http://www.supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=4975

Most of them seem like they don't even know what a 360 is.... Well i'm glad they're happy, personally i still think he looks like crap. Just look at the star wars charcs. from SC! Those are amazing.
May 22nd, 2008 4:16 PM CST - Glamador
Yea SC is going with shiny, SF is going with cel-shady, and MK is going with gritty. Three very different fighting games with three very different styles all coming out in the same 6 month period. Crazy ain't it? But I don't think these models look any worse that what we're seeing in SC. Recall what was said above about Gears looking so good because everything was metal and Unreal handles metal well? The same concept applies to SCIV. Everybody is wearing armor and wielding metallic weaponry. Of course it's going to look good. But I thought the trailer looked great and in-game will always look different than renders what with lighting and battle damage. So just give it a once over, deside if you like the design, and wait 'til we see it in action before comparing it to all the in-game screenshots you've seen of SCIV. If you notice, none of the renders for SCIV look like they do in-game.

To me, the characters of SC2 were always better looking then SC3. The backgrounds were better, sweeter, but they lost something in the characters. The only thing better was a few clothing faults. With MK, MK:D always looked better then MK:Arm. The more you put in a game, the more you pressure it for disk space, the less impressive the moving graphics will be. I love the background of MK:Arm more then MK:D, but the characters are so naff!

You're right on many levels. But they are using the updated Unreal engine (i believe) and there is A LOT of new stuff they could do. I don't know, when MK came out last gen i was amazed by the graphics. Maybe cause of how nicely it jumped from 2D to 3D, but i was just amazed. I'm not this time around however. I feel like i'll be buying a second-rate fighting game and that is how i should never feel while buying a MK game.

Is it just me, or is Superman's ear bleeding?
May 25th, 2008 4:59 PM CST - Glamador
Hey it does look like that. Maybe he burst a vein.
May 26th, 2008 12:30 PM CST - Goraka
He has quite a 5 o'clock shadow too. Maybe this is the equivalent of somebody less powerful going ten rounds with Goro.

New renders of sub zero are posted on worldscollide. Not going to post them here cause i'm sure there will be a thread made soon in the news section

Thanks for that. Now I can transfer some of my color edits to different backgrounds. Is he in the same place vertically that he was in the image with the background?
