ok i'm here to clear this up.... WHO IS A NINJA?

Male Ninjas: Scorpion, Noob, Sub-zero, Smoke, Reptile, Ermac, Rain, Chameleon, Tremor, and Wu Lae.

Cyber Ninjas: Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke (Cyber) and Sub-zero (Cyber)

Female Ninjas: Kitana, Jade, Mileena, Tanya, Skarlet, Frost and Khameleon.

Who's Wu Lae? He from Shaolin Monks?
 
Any Lin-Kuei characters are assassins not ninja's. So you can take off Sub,Smoke,Cyrax,Sektor and Noob.

Scorpion and Tremor are ninja's.

Reptile isn't a ninja either.

All the females you listed are Kunoichi except Frost she's Lin-Kuei.

Which I wish someone would really clear this up. I'm kinda nerdy when it comes to this stuff but, we need someone who knows their shit to break this down.
Because I always thought Ninjas were assassins so wouldn't that mean the lin-kuei are ninjas? Even though Sub-Zero has that one line in "Mythologies". Maybe that was just horrible writing.
And what is a Shinobi? Is that technically what the lin-kuei are? Someone drop some schwience about ninjas quick!

Agreed, but you forgetting their important role as spies and saboteurs.

In today's world Ninjutsu is trying to recreate the material arts teachings, that were thought in the 12th - 17th century of course todays teachings aren't the same as the old ones due to the loss of training scriptures or the non existence of such. Don't forget that ninjas or shinobi (male) or kunoichi (female) were mainly spies. Not to mention their primary role as spies and saboteurs. Not all ninjas were used as assassins but they had the training. Beside this I agree with you ;)

Evaluating by the MK story as basis you are right :)

From the above discussion we can reliably conclude that Scorpion is the only technical Ninja as far as MK is concerned. Sure we can call the others masked guys 'ninjas' for namesake and ease. But when techicality comes into the picture, Scorpion is the only one.

I myself am a Ninjitsu practitioner, so I am well aware of the material teachings regarding it. Hope it helped :).

@Battle_Scarz: To put it briefly, a shinobi is a young male ninja in training. There are several associated ranks for Ninjas based on their experience and skill levels similar to the belts in other martial arts. I can go on about it but it may derail the thread lol. Hope it helped :)

I agree. To be a Ninja, one must have learned ninjutsu, but the thing is nobody knows what fighting style Kitana, Jade, Reptile and others learned. But the most probable scenario is that they're all masked assassins and Scorpion is the only true Ninja.

Characters like Ermac, Mileena and Skarlet can't be ninjas because they were created as adults that knows how to fight "by instinct", no one taught them. You can argue that since Ermac was created from a lot of warriors' souls, he could be a ninja for probably having at least one ninja soul within him, but it's more logical to think that he mixed every fighting style of the deceased warriors and created his own.

So really as far as the MK universe is concerned the Lin-Kuei have never been specified as being ninjas. Although their behavior's are pretty much the definition of such.
Spies, saboteurs and assassins.
And reptile as well has these traits.
While Ermac stands out as having none of these really. None of the ninja type characters are specified as being trained in ninjitsu.
So it's kind of a who knows but the creator.
And it sounds to me like John Tobias had about the same definition of what a ninja really is that most people do.
A masked martial artist.
Its a huge hole in the Mythos that they need to straighten out for all the fans.
So we know once and for all. Too many ninjas that look like ninjas but probably aren't ninjas! LOL!

LOL! Thats quite true, NRS really needs to clear it up. They initially introduced all these 'Ninjas' as a publicity stunt to gain more players back in the 90s but I guess that won't work anymore.

I think the reason the Lin Kuei don't consider themselves as Ninja's are because they are chinese and the Shirai Ryu were traditional Japanese Ninjas. Guess they found it disrespectful to be referred to as 'Ninjas' cause they were compared to a japanese ninja clan which they found inferior to them
 
Mileena and Kitana were assassins.
Jade was a body gaurd.
Tanya was a runaway.
Khameleon was a random mix of characters.

Frost and Skarlet closely resemble "ninjas" since we don't know too much about them. Skarlet more closely since her moves consist of her dashing fast, throwing kunais, and reapearing behind the target with her blades.
 
We have already had this discussion before....and people got sand in their vaginas.....keep it civil and it can stay open. First sign of sandy vaginas, thread gets closed.

They aren't really "ninjas", the majority of them.

Only reason people call them "ninjas" is because they have some sort of mask covering half their face, which to them=ninja.

They can be assassins, spectres, ect. I don't consider them to be ninjas, especialy since the majority of males are slow like molasses
 
Most people who harp about most of the listed characters not being ninjas are just trying to give others a hard time, even though they are fully aware which group of characters are referred to. Their characters design are inspired by ninjas. The Lin Kieu are even described as ninja-like in MK1. Ed Boon calls them ninjas. Why are people splitting hairs about this?

Yes, I agree that they are inspired by Ninjas but some of us here would like to know the technical aspects on who Ninjas really are and whether those characters can be categorised as real technical Ninjas or not. It is not about what Ed Boon calls them or not, its more about looking into the real facts for answers since we dont have sources to confirm this. Bottomline is some of us would like stuff like this to be broken down and explained to us and be more knowledgable :). Btw isnt this thread about classifying Mk chars into Ninjas??

Agree...BUT I would love to hear how cyrax became a lin kuei LOL...I think the only asian lin kuei is sektor.
 
Tremor is a ninja
wu lae is not a ninja, he doesnt even look like a ninja
frost is sorta a ninja
reptile is no longer a ninja,despite his seclusion, he revealed his self fully unlike the other warriors
Inferno Scorpion and Unmasked SubZero doesn't count

Lizards can't be ninjas? Sir, that's racist! :laugh:

I see Reptile and I see him as a ninja (in look), hood, mask, pants, looks ninjish to me, the only thing missing is a gi, but still, looks like an alien ninja, besides, he has a gi in his alt.
