Mortal Kombat 1 General Discussion Media Thread

I wasn't referring to you specifically. You already mentioned you still had some of these games on genesis,32X ect; I think it's safe to say that most people who post on a niche MK forum such as this one.....own most if not all these old games already. Me being one of them but there are plenty of new players who never played any of the old MKs because there's no conventional way to play them before the Legacy Kollection released. MK4 for example hasn't been available commercially for 20 plus years and it's part of the arcade era. Hell MK1-UMK3 has seen multiple re releases throughout the years while MK4 kept getting the shaft. Now wether it should or shouldn't been even nominated at the VGAs......I get what your saying but it's their show so..... it's whatever to me. I can't think of a time where a new game lost to a repackaged old game in any award show. Metal Gear Solid delta wasn't even mentioned at the VGAs and it's a remake of MGS3. My issue is with the quality of the game and thats where MK legacy dropped the ball.

I have a interesting bit of info from MK Tom Brady during a Mike Hollow pod cast at 3:14:47 where he confirms from “reliable sources” Injustice 3 is indeed NRS next game and will be announced by WB before the Netflix merger goes through next year. Normally I would ignore these hear say statements but Tom does know and has worked with a lot of the NRS testers personally in the past. I have no reason to believe he’s lying here but again feel free to take this information at your own discretion.

I figured that the next game would be Injustice 3, especially with James Gunn doing DC stuff and this whole merger / buyout where the new owner will probably also want more superhero stuff.
Whether MK fans like to hear it or not, Batman, Superman and a good portion of the comic book characters resonates with a lot more people than MK does. I'm not saying that MK isn't popular, but just that comic book characters tend to be more popular (in general).

I would agree that DC as a whole has a bigger appeal than MK hands down but Injustice as a franchise doesn't draw near the numbers MK brings. From what I researched Injustice 2 sold 2.5 million untils by 2018. Which is nothing to sneeze at but to a AAA publisher like WB it's small compared to MK1s 6.2 million. My biggest concern is the part where Brady mentions the budget of Injustice 3 being half of MK1's budget. We could end up in another MK Legacy situation all over again. Now obviously a lot can happen between now and the time we get a official announcement from NRS so I'm going to try to remain optimistic. Having said that it is something to keep in mind.

Copies sold means nothing. It's all about profit. If I2 makes more money because it had a smaller budget, then it's a bigger success than MK1.

I agree with Xenon here.

Injustice might not have the sales power of MK, but MK is too much of the wild card. MK1 basically destroyed any confidence they had in it.

Injustice is based on DC, so they have endless supply of characters and storylines to choose from. They don't really even need to create something original, just take any story and have evil Superman in it. That's it.

MK on other hand, never really managed to leave fighting game genre. Movies aren't some blockbusters, that make hundreds of millions and while the brand recognition is strong, it is way too much of the gamble and too resource heavy. Also the fact that MK doesn't even have one coherent vision, doesn't help either. It is always new timeline, new version, new this and that. You can't invest in it for long term, unlike Injustice, which has some sort of coherency, even if it ain't perfect.

Basically. MK only has brand recognition at this point and is too risky, while rewards are just not being worth it. Better make less sales, but at least have some sort of guarantees.

From what Brady mentioned during the podcast that Injustice 3 is being developed on a shoe string budget from WB since the Netflix merger hasn’t gone through yet. That could be good or bad news depending on what gets cut or whatever to meet the budget. It sounds like a MK legacy cash grab situation all over again to me but I guess time will tell.

Well to be fair. Too many unknowns are happening as it is. Merger, Injustice 3 must be clearly in early production. So I wouldn't be surprised if they are taking their time. Maybe, just maybe a limited budget will force them to maintain Injustice 2 infrastructure and improve on it. Limitation is always good for creativity.

...

Oh who am I kidding here.

I'd argue that NRS made better games when they where working under a two year development cycle. It's seems the longer it takes for them to get a game out the door...The worse they are IMO. Taking your sweet ass time to make something doesn't always translate to quality especially in NRS case.

I get that, but when the games were under a two year development cycle the workers were being over-worked and supposedly not treated right, so I'd rather have whatever it is take a little longer and be done right than have an MK1 situation where it's rushed because WB wants to take the pizza out of the oven quickly before it's done and all of the toppings are sliding off of the crust, and the cheese isn't melted.
Let it cook a bit.
Not to mention the other issues like $10 Fatalities (Halloween), $10 skins (Nitara and Sub-Zero's DA) and all of the shitty WB practices for MTX.
I mean, shit, it took until the Ermac release / April update of 2024 (7 months later) for the game to finally feel properly balanced and done right...........like how it should have been from launch.

Come on, lads. Let's not pretend, they spent 4 years on MK1. I can barely believe 2 years, due how shallow entire thing was. They took a whole year just to make an online leaderboard, remember?

It ain't how much time they have, that is the problem. It's their management that is the core issue. They don't have gamers, nor efficient managers making decisions. When the face of MK, The great Mr. Ed Boon, doesn't play the damn game it shouldn't be surprising why everything about MK development sucks.

They kept reinventing the wheel every two years, for no reason.

An efficient studio which KNOWS that they only have 2 years to develop a game sequel, wouldn't reinvent the wheel, but make ONE version of the game and use those 2 years to add and improve on the model. All they had to do, was just keep improving MK9. Add, refine, expand to existing MK9 model. That's all.
