Time to mobilize the Mortal Kombat community again to participate in another fan-contributed vote. The cause this time is for the Walk of Game in Sony's Metreon, a digital entertainment mecca in San Francisco. Mortal Kombat is nominated under the Games / Characters section and needs your vote every day during the month of October.

Walk of Game is the first-of-its-kind landmark honoring the icons and pioneers of the videogame industry.

Walk of Game is located inside Metreon, a 350,000 square-foot entertainment complex at Fourth and Mission Streets in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

Every year, gamers worldwide cast their vote on www.WalkOfGame.com to induct the next set of honorees to receive a permanent 24"x 24", customized steel star on the Walk of Game. From the list of nominees, the top four in the category of Games/Characters and the top two in Lifetime Achievement will be inducted. Inductees to date are: Nolan Bushnell, Shigeru Miyamoto, Halo, Link (The Legend of Zelda), Mario, and Sonic The Hedgehog.

The list of nominees is compiled from a survey of industry members and technology, entertainment, and gaming media. SCA Interactive, a leader in online promotions, powers the Walk of Game voting interface.

Vote early and vote often to ensure Mortal Kombat's place in another crazy video game history shrine. Related forum discussion topic.

About a year ago, games publisher, Acclaim, filed for bankruptcy, after the executives loaded the company with loads of debt that eventually ran the company into the ground. A group of trustees sued Acclaim for the company's mismanagement and as a result, the trustees are putting up for auction the publishing rights to over 200 videogame titles.

Amongst these titles are a numerous number of Midway arcade home conversions, as Midway at the time did not have a home console publishing division. Included in the auction are the rights for games like WWF WrestleMania Arcade, Revolution X, the NBA Jam series, Super High Impact and more. But most importantly, Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II are amongst the list of rights up for bid. Although Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II both have been released in previous Midway, those games were arcade code emulation, not the code that was created for the SNES, Genesis and PC versions Acclaim had published in the past.

Word is buzzing around the rumor mill that Midway's relentless schedule of one new Mortal Kombat each year is keeping the Mortal Kombat series from transitioning to the next generation consoles, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3. While the MK team has been somewhat distracted by the completion of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, work has been ramping up on the next Mortal Kombat fighting game. During the transition from the current generation to the next, games will still be developed for both generations at the same time, as with previous generation transitions. The next Mortal Kombat will most likely build upon the existing fighting engine from Deception/Deadly Alliance and also expand Deception's Konquest mode. While this information is still mostly rumors, the prospects of the next Mortal Kombat fighting game to stay on current generation consoles is a very likely scenario.
9:43 PM CST -
To elaborate on our previous rumor mill posting, we had also heard that Midway was contemplating naming the next Mortal Kombat game Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. A quick check on the Internet's domain records reveals that Midway had recently registered the domain name MKArmageddon.com () on Friday, September 23rd, 2005. Given that the same source provided us with the Armageddon subtitle, we believe that this domain registration corraborates the story about the next Mortal Kombat fighting game remaining on current generation consoles. Check out a screenshot of the registrar record, just in case Midway tries to cover this up.

Extremely interesting information coming to light.

Our friends over at Mortal Kombat Online have learned that Scorpion is going to be making an appearence in the season premiere of the Comedy Central animated reality show spoof Drawn Together. He is one of many who interview with the show's cast as a potential new roommate. Here is the episode synopsis from Comedy Central.

[color=#FF8800]The One Wherein There's a Big Twist Part 2 (201)
The Season 1 cliffhanger continues as the cast crash lands on a supposedly deserted island. Everyone, except for Toot, makes it safely back to the house, where they immediately interview potential new roommates, including Scorpion from the video game Mortal Kombat. They settle on Strawberry Sweetcake.

The episode will air on Wednesday, October 19th at 10:30 PM EST/9:30 PM CST. Check your local listings to find the channel Comedy Central is on in your area.

I find it interesting that they settled on a character named Strawberry Sweetcake after some controversy that was created a few years ago. Popular online comic Penny Arcade posted a humorus take on Strawberry Shortcake and was told to take it down or face legal action from American Greetings. I'm pretty sure that American Greetings will have a problem with Strawberry Sweetcake getting strangled like I saw in the show promo this evening, and who knows what else the character will be up to in the series. I know that I will be tuning in to find out.

Midway announced today that Mortal Kombat: Deception has shipped as a Greatest Hits title for the PlayStation 2 and as a Platinum Hits title for the Xbox. As a new addition to these prominent programs, Mortal Kombat: Deception will be re-distributed with new packaging at a suggested retail price of $19.99.

By definition, a title earning the Greatest Hits and/or Platinum Hits distinction requires that a company manufacture more than 400,000 units per respective platform during its first nine months on store shelves. In total, Mortal Kombat: Deception has shipped in excess of 1.9 million units worldwide since its release in October 2004.

With a little more than 5 weeks away from being released in the United States, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is starting to build some steam towards the starting line of the next-generation console race. One of the built-in features of the Xbox 360 is the Xbox Live Arcade, featuring simple games for the casual gamer to download and play instantly. Microsoft announced a list of 21 Xbox Live Arcade games to be available during launch, with 35 to be available by summer 2006.

Amongst the list of launch games are four Midway arcade classics such as, Gauntlet, Joust, Robotron 2048, and SmashTV. All four of these games have made an appearance on the first Midway Arcade Treasures title; however, Xbox Live Arcade offers Midway a direct to consumer distribution channel with very little costs involved, no DVD disc to master or box to ship. In addition, these versions are Xbox Live enabled, which means online multiplayer.

As the Xbox 360 matures and Xbox Live Arcade gains in popularity, perhaps Midway will open up their catalog and provide more and more classic arcade titles to Xbox Live Arcade. One very likely scenario is an online Xbox Live enabled version of the classic Mortal Kombat arcade games.

If Midway charged $10-$20 for a Xbox Live enabled Mortal Kombat or Mortal Kombat II, would you be comfortable enough to buy the title directly through the Xbox Live Marketplace? If not, why?
