6:23 PM CST -
After being released over six months some intrepid gamers have discovered a hidden Survial Mode in Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks.

The steps to perform this task are quite extensive and it is possible that it may actually be easier to do than we know so far, but that is something yet to be seen. Here is how you get to Survial Mode:
  1. Start in Foundry
  2. Grab the Axe
  3. Go into the room with the lava. (You must break the wooden door to enter this area)
  4. Jump into the lava, then jump back out.
  5. Go into the room to the right of the save statue
  6. Smash the barrel at the end of the hall using the O button on PS2, or the B on Xbox
  7. Go up the ramp, and to the left.
  8. Smash the barrel on the right.
  9. Go to the area with the Nitara weapon.
  10. Smash the barrel on the right.
  11. Go to the area with the stones that drop from the ceiling and smash this barrel.
  12. Go back to the area with the Nitara weapon.
  13. Smash the left barrel.
  14. Go back down the ramp.
  15. Smash the left barrel using the O button on PS2, or the B on Xbox.
  16. Press and hold the O button on PS2 or the B on Xbox to smash the ground. (You should see green sparks if you did everything correcly.)
  17. Press R2 on the PS2 or BLACK on Xbox to enter survival mode.
Here is a video demonstration on how to perform this task. If you have trouble playing the video below click here.

Thanks to Goroliath and sektor_rulz over at Mortal Kombat Online for investing the time to discover this trick. Great work!

Awesome! Has anyone here tried that yet? I wonder how many options there are in survivor mode?

Sorry for being stupid, but what is survival mode? What do you do in it?
April 22nd, 2006 1:58 AM CST - Vigilante_FireDragon
Just as it says, you fight until you die and it's game over. You only get one chance at it. To Drew: Very good! I like it. Got to do it when I get a chance.

Do you just play the game from start to finish with only one life? Sounds a little pointless. It took me 15 mins to dl this video (suck ass dialup right now), and it ended without even going into the survival mode to see what it is.
April 22nd, 2006 7:28 AM CST - Chaka
No, they have videos of it over on mkonline. It looks class.
April 22nd, 2006 9:55 AM CST - QuanChiKiller
Well I just tried it on the Xbox version and it worked no prob. Seems pretty cool but hard as hell.

There are nine levels all up. Did you make it to the Shokan team of Kintaro and Goro? That is level 8! Level nine you fight all the ninjas, Subby, Reppy, Ermac and Scorpion. I bet that's a tough battle?

You do NOT go down the ramp, the last barral is on the upper level. You get as many chances as you want, some of you thought that you get one and that is pointless. It's called 'SURVIVAL MODE'. Anyways it's kind of ironic that it's called survival mode and you can die and still continue at the level where you left off. I got to level 8 where my game messed up. Kintaro grabbed goro (to do the grab+puch move) I'm sure this is a glitch, cuz it crashed there.
April 22nd, 2006 1:01 PM CST - Special Forces
Yeah it works but it always freezes on lvl 3.
April 22nd, 2006 2:11 PM CST - QuanChiKiller
Strange how no one found this till now....guess we were just too damn worn out from looking for SU's in MKD. Oh well, I'm sure we'll have it together for MKA.
April 22nd, 2006 2:17 PM CST - DAVE101
I finally beat level 9. Wow is it hard. There are so many unblockable team combos... Another note: you do NOT have to hold O or B to get the sparks to come out. You can just tap it.
April 22nd, 2006 8:22 PM CST - Khaos
Damnit, mine froze up after the 3rd level.
April 22nd, 2006 8:33 PM CST - Prophet
Special Forces came on and said to me that apparently it freezes on the 3rd level for most, if not all of the XBOX versions.
April 22nd, 2006 9:00 PM CST - Chaka
Froze after level 3 on mine too. So is everybody with the PAL XBox version having this problem?
April 22nd, 2006 9:03 PM CST - Prophet
Everyone on XBOX version period. Maybe Drew should edit that into the News thing.
April 22nd, 2006 9:44 PM CST - DAVE101
It freezes on ALL versions on any level. The first time I tried it, it froze on level 8 because kintaro picked up goro. The game isn't wan't made for you to fight multiple bosses. This was a well hidden secret which obviusly isn't going to have most testing. Be patient. BTW level 3 is pretty much the easiest and quickest, if not level 4 is. No one should be having problems as it's probably done the quickest leaving the least oppurtunity for a crash. Of course there are other things to consider..
April 23rd, 2006 4:50 AM CST - Drew
Has anyone with an Xbox passed level 3 without it freezing up on them? BTW. If you check Patricks previous post, we've added videos from each of the 9 levels in.
April 23rd, 2006 5:48 AM CST - Prophet
I watched each video, which seemed to be about 15 minutes each. If Patrick captured those videos, what card did you use? It seemed by watching level nine, that Ermac and Sub-Zero seemed tougher than Ermac, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Reptile. I won't be trying Survival mode. For me it's the thrill of the hunt, not the find, that gets me.
April 23rd, 2006 7:24 AM CST - Adesto
So...err...is there only 9 levels? I wouldn't know because that's when I quit after, like, the 8th time dying in that level.

Yes, there is nine levels. But I wouldn't say 'Only' they are all grueling to say the least. Level 8 you must face off and defeat both Kintaro and Goro at the same time! The match I watched is 9 minutes long and very tough. Level 9 has you facing off 4 ninjas, Subby, Reppy, Ermac and Scorpion. And they all go hardcore, they don't sit back and wait for another of the ninjas to attack, they just all go nuts!
April 23rd, 2006 7:38 AM CST - Adesto
I know, I've been there, and they killed me countlessly like it's a bodily function. Also, Ko-op doesn't make it much easier, as I died in the level with Kano in Ko-op.

My bad, I didnt read all of your post, dude. I have yet to try this newly discovered survival mode. I am too lazy to put in my MKSM's game That Shokan fight must be so tough, like you say. Who did you fight both of them with? And the reason co-op is not much easier is because the computer AI steps up in difficulty when two people are playing.
April 23rd, 2006 9:05 AM CST - DAVE101
I haven't downloaded the videos from here but at MKO they are only 3-5 minutes, which is about the time it takes me to beat each one. Nine minutes is sad.

Yeah, like i made a big boo boo, sorry. That Shokan match is 5 minut4es long. I was watching so many videos at the time that I mixed some up in running time. I got confused with this video which is 9 minutes long! http://www.trmk.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8405244 Sorry fallas, my bad. But still 5 minutes facing of both Kintaro and Goro is a pretty grueling experience

I just tried to get through level 3 a couple times, and each time it froze up on the loading screen. For once we get an MK game with an actual "super unlockable" item like we've all been hoping for, and now everyone who has an Xbox apparently gets screwed out of enjoying it.
April 24th, 2006 11:14 AM CST - Hydro
I have a question guys. Can you actually do this with two people, KO-OP? Are the steps different or the same to get to survival mode in KO-OP? I will try it tonight and see because I hope you can. Now if we can play with just one more fighter....Smoke would be nice ***I just did this on my lunch. Works like a charm. I cleared through level 3 and right when loading to level 4, it locked up. I tell ya I love this game alot but I think it is far bigger than what current consoles can handle. I cant wait till they make a MKSM of some sort on the next gen. That will be smoking. Another question, is there more levels after 9 and someone mentioned there are unlockable team combos after clearing them? How many and what are they? By the team I get an answer, I will of probably found out on my own. Just curious. Happy MKing!
April 24th, 2006 3:37 PM CST - Vigilante_FireDragon
Look! I got the same problem on my for the X-Box. Looks like it wasn't meant to be publicized due to the glitch of freezing during the loading screen. I was able to do up to 3 levels. That sucks!
April 24th, 2006 7:13 PM CST - Adesto
Yes, you can play it with Ko-op. It isn't much easier since you both have the same Health Bar.
April 24th, 2006 8:01 PM CST - Hydro
Yeah I tried playing solo on all fighters, Kung Lao 3 times and the others 1 time each. Once I beat level 3 and go to the loading screen of level 4. It doesn't even load. What gives?! I have the XBOX. This freakn sux. There are soooo many different bugs in this game. Why in the world couldn't they of spent more time testing this stuff out. I would hate to have to get a PS2 version just to do survival. Another Negative point to Midway. I will hope they take more time with MK Arm.

Yeah! Good point Hydro. I hope Midway is taking their time with Armageddon, because I don't want to spend a lot of money on it, and it doesn't work. I will NEVER FORGIVE for what they done with it! Like I said before, I think they did not publicize survival because they knew all along about the glitch on that game and bad storyline in some situations.

The mode probably wasn't even ment to be found.

Yes you might be correct about it wasn't never meant to be found, however, go to this link and read what midway has said about the Survival mode. Totally BS and please submit comments to them about being Incomplete and/or wrongful information. The link is here - http://www.trmk.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8405324

They'll have the same reason as the MK2 on (PS2?) on PAL.. They just decided to scrap it at the last minute.

I didn't really believe it when I read over on MKonline about Scorpion swearing... but I was pleasantly surprised when he swore at me in my last fight with those 4! Level 9 is hard... ridiculously hard. Scorpion harpooned me for the god-knows-how-manyeth-time and said "Get the f**k over here"! Kind of funny if you ask me. I guess he also says "Get over here bi**h!"

Level 8 is easy. Level 9 is hard, but I guess I wasn't trying. Never froze for me (ps2) and I did it only with liu kang. To do this again do you have to break all the barrels again?

Yep. I even tried saving my game after I got the green-spark-portal thing to appear, but when continuing from that save point, the green-spark-portal thing would be gone.
April 30th, 2006 12:48 PM CST - scorpion'sting
well, you don't need to do all that stuff, you only need to: Start in Foundry Grab the Axe Go into the room with the lava. Jump into the lava, then jump back out. Go into the room to the right of the save statue Smash the barrel at the end of the hall using the O button on PS2, or the B on Xbox Go to the area with the Nitara weapon. Smash the barrel on the right. Go to the left and press the O button on PS2 or the B on Xbox to smash the ground and the green sparks will be there Press R2 on the PS2 or BLACK on Xbox to enter survival mode.[/list]
April 30th, 2006 1:14 PM CST - Vigilante_FireDragon
To those who own it for the X-Box: Did you all notice that levels 2 and 3 backgrounds are all messed up? That's one reason that I notice of having the problem of freezing on the loading screen going to level 4.
May 1st, 2006 7:22 AM CST - Hydro
Yes I did notice that. the 2 and 3 levels on the xbox are really incomplete looking in comparison to the PS2 version. I actually rented the PS2 version, beat it with Kung Lao, and then did survival. It froze once after I did a fat in level 3. Other than that, I went all the way through. Every level was easy even 8. Level 9 was a awesome and tough fight. Took me the 3rd try to beat them. Fighting all the ninjas was awesome.
May 1st, 2006 6:04 PM CST - Vigilante_FireDragon
I believe you on that one. I bet when I rent it for the PS2, I beat all 9 levels in one try! Don't believe me. I will do it and that's a promise for sure.
