For some players I've encountered while playing Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Xbox Live, they can freely destroy me using Shang Tsung and morphing into any character in the game. They can put on Random Kombat and make their opponents feel useless, no matter which fighter pops up in their favor. Needless to say, I am not one of those players.
I am pretty good with Scorpion and Smoke, and above average with about four other fighters; with every other combatant on the roster, I am useless. I'm admitting this because I suspect I am not the only player on these forums who is pretty good with a couple of fighters and terrible with the rest, so this is my "call to arms," so to speak, to generate discussion on which fighters you intend to improve with.
Certainly this new Mortal Kombat has got folks who do not normally use the likes of Liu Kang or Mileena watching their presentation videos, thinking "Wow, that looks really cool. I need to figure out how to pull all of that off for myself." My problem, of course, is the fact that I suck with Liu Kang, and I really suck with Mileena. This will be the first Mortal Kombat where I attempt to complete the game with the entire roster, so learning each character will be essential, but becoming a good player? That's a big distinction.
Like most average fighting game players, I lean toward "twitch" characters; in Street Fighter, I tend to play as Ryu and other characters that shoot projectiles. I like the ability to keep my opponent at a distance. With Mortal Kombat, I've made strides in using characters liberally rather than conservatively; using Scorpion, I will charge opponents and open combos up from the air, as opposed to simply sitting back and spamming the spear. That said, I'm still a long ways away from conquering the "charge" characters that have eluded me over the years. I would like to rectify that in some way this time around.
In summation, what are your weak points in Mortal Kombat? Are you going to try to improve them for a more well-rounded game, or will you focus on your strengths to get better at what you're best at? Are there any fighters you will look to improve with?
I, personally, will attempt to become efficient with Nightwolf as my power character for a more diverse cast. I will also attempt to take my skills with Sektor (with whom I'm average) to the next level, as he seems like a good heavy this time around. Above all, I've always been sort of a clusterwhat with Ermac, and I will strive to figure him out this time. And, of course, I plan on becoming great with Stryker, just to make people mad when I beat their asses with him.
