Who do you plan to be better with in Mortal Kombat?

For some players I've encountered while playing Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Xbox Live, they can freely destroy me using Shang Tsung and morphing into any character in the game. They can put on Random Kombat and make their opponents feel useless, no matter which fighter pops up in their favor. Needless to say, I am not one of those players.

I am pretty good with Scorpion and Smoke, and above average with about four other fighters; with every other combatant on the roster, I am useless. I'm admitting this because I suspect I am not the only player on these forums who is pretty good with a couple of fighters and terrible with the rest, so this is my "call to arms," so to speak, to generate discussion on which fighters you intend to improve with.

Certainly this new Mortal Kombat has got folks who do not normally use the likes of Liu Kang or Mileena watching their presentation videos, thinking "Wow, that looks really cool. I need to figure out how to pull all of that off for myself." My problem, of course, is the fact that I suck with Liu Kang, and I really suck with Mileena. This will be the first Mortal Kombat where I attempt to complete the game with the entire roster, so learning each character will be essential, but becoming a good player? That's a big distinction.

Like most average fighting game players, I lean toward "twitch" characters; in Street Fighter, I tend to play as Ryu and other characters that shoot projectiles. I like the ability to keep my opponent at a distance. With Mortal Kombat, I've made strides in using characters liberally rather than conservatively; using Scorpion, I will charge opponents and open combos up from the air, as opposed to simply sitting back and spamming the spear. That said, I'm still a long ways away from conquering the "charge" characters that have eluded me over the years. I would like to rectify that in some way this time around.

In summation, what are your weak points in Mortal Kombat? Are you going to try to improve them for a more well-rounded game, or will you focus on your strengths to get better at what you're best at? Are there any fighters you will look to improve with?

I, personally, will attempt to become efficient with Nightwolf as my power character for a more diverse cast. I will also attempt to take my skills with Sektor (with whom I'm average) to the next level, as he seems like a good heavy this time around. Above all, I've always been sort of a clusterwhat with Ermac, and I will strive to figure him out this time. And, of course, I plan on becoming great with Stryker, just to make people mad when I beat their asses with him. ;)

Trying to improve: My level of ****yness, it's pretty high but I gotta step it up a bit for MK9. Kidding. Umm, honestly I just really want to be a force to be reckoned with using Johnny Cage. Dude gets a bad rap, and he's one of the more plain characters. I just want to show everybody how much he can kick ass. From what Ive seen, I'm liking the looks of Ermac and Noob, Sektor has always been one of my favorites as well. Who knows bro, this game is something brand new, I might end up using someone I never even expected to use depending on my playstyle :P great thread though

Truthfully, you know what the one thing I hate about fighting games, that I am coming into this one knowing I am going to get better at?

Those bastards who just spam one attack. In SOULCALIBUR IV it's the dude with the staff using those movest hat hit you four times each, in Mortal Kombat vs DCU it's the Flash and Subzero/Scorpion. You know, those moves that are hard to avoid and you can't truely do anything about them.

I once went to a local game fair, set up by Game Crazy, where there was a prize for beating the manager at Soulcalibur 4. Only problem was was that he used an infinite combo on everyone, hell, in the two years I went, with the 12 hours total, no one beat him.

So, that is my goal: becoming good enough to beat those people who just do the same move over and over and over and over.....
Yeah, I'm not htat great at fighting games.

...there's long way to explain, but something's telling i won't be good like with EVERY character in game...just like good old times i'll more than likely stick with my favorites, plus maybe try some more (1-2 characters) to master and thats it...i've been never able to master characters with difficult technics, thats something beyond my skills to surpass...generally my favorites are Sheeva and Sonya. I'm also doing well with Sub-Zero and Scorpion...and i'm planning to master Sindel and Jade in new game!

I would love to Master Noob Saibot, and get better with some of the characters that I'm generally not good with, like Johnny Cage and Reptile.

My top 5 characters for MK 9, so far, are: 1) Noob Saibot, 2) Scorpion, 3) Sub-Zero, 4) Raiden, 5) Baraka

I'll start off with my top 5 first: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke.

Then later on maybe try out, Noob Saibot and Liu Kang. Then maybe anyone else who catches my interest.

We need more Sub-Zero players because everyone and their mom plays as Scorpion. haha

Really? In my (limited) experiance with MK vs DCU, everyone was Subby.

How popular is Ermac? I'm not saying I want to be a beautiful and Unique snowflake, but nore do I want to fight someone who has the advantage of 200 bazillion battles against my character, either.

Any Strykers players out there? lol

Anyway, yeah. I'm probably gonna use a Stryker, and then maybe later Rain (if confirmed) and Smoke, although after seeing noob in action, I probably gonna toy around with him a bit too.

With MK (and other fighting games in general), I'm probably gonna try blocking and dodging a little more. Actually, I'm probably gonna work on dodging.

I am pretty good at fighter's. I got #14 rank at Tekken Dark Resurrection for a while. I did not even know I was at top rank in till I heard people mentioning it online when I would fight them. I am glad they are making this game for the more hardcore fighters. I also like how they modified the attacks to each limb. Learning all the characters in this game is probably out of the picture for me. I will first give all the characters a go, really try to dig in there move set. I will usually go for the character that has good combination of high and low attacks. It is essential in a fighting game to have some good sweep attacks. It confuses your opponent defensively. I like to get inside, I am a very offensive opponent when I play fighting games. Special moves are also a big deal, I like moves that move quick similar to Kabal's move set but generally you have to watch out for these type of moves because if blocked, they tend to keep you open for punishment for a good duration.

Absolutely. I like the idea of having a different character for each style of play, from aggressive to defensive, from keep-away types to close-range types.

Kung Lao definitely for me, I'm good at doing his infinite in UMK3. People get mad and quit when you pull out an infinite on them, lol.

I'm gonna mostly restrict myself to mastering Noob...

But I might try to improve my Kung Lao skills, to just annoy people online with huge combos...

I actually don't think I'll be using Sub-Zero too much in this one. I'm leaning towards Noob and Sektor.

I'm going to master Johnny Cage for starters, because he's my polygonal soulmate and we must be together.

...then I'll move on to Sonya. I'm loving her design in this game and from what little gameplay I've seen of her, she looks like a force to be reckoned with. Another I'm really looking forward to getting better with is Ermac. I really like him, but rarely play as him.
