What was the one thing MK9 did not deliver?

Personally, I see MK9 as an almost perfect game - it was an outstanding piece of fanservice, which is something that a majority of MK fans would agree on. My question for you though, is what was missing? And how can it be addressed in the sequel?

As MK9 tried to provide the full MK1-MK2-MK3 package, not including Motaro as a sub-boss made the package incomplete in my eyes. I did like how we could at least see him in the story mode - it showed that MK team did acknowledge his role in MK3, but he did not even have any lines. Now, I understand that making him a sub-boss would have taken a lot of time and adjusting (e.g. some X-rays would have to be completely changed), but I believe it was worth spending time on. I would rather don't have the challenge tower and have Motaro than the other way around. I mean I spent so much time playing the original trilogy as well as the actual Trilogy MK game, which is pretty much a predecessor of MK9 that included all three sub-bosses, I just wish MK9 did too.

Now onto the second part of the question, how can this be addressed? According to the early rumours of MK10 storyline (which I do not believe were trustworthy), Motaro is to be resurrected in the Netherrealm and serve as the sub-boss of the game. If that was the case, I would be really happy about it, however it would still feel like the game he should have appeared in was MK9.

Please feel free to share your views, I am expecting a lot of missing -alities in your posts :)

Single player content.

I wasn't a fan on the sh*tty challenge tower and story mode can only be replayed so many times.

I want things like chess kombat, konquest mode, etc.

This pretty much sums it up for me. On top of replayability factor, the sense of completion for me was completely bland. You finish story mode, okay, you beat ladder mode with all the characters, okay, and you finish tower mode, okay. Now what? At least MK:D and MK:A (MK:D more to an extent), you'd still have new things to do in Konquest Mode, and some things you could only do after beating Konquest mode, such as unlocking Liu Kang. That and unlocking characters, I remember when I was younger, it took me MONTHS to unlock everyone in MK:DA and MK:D. That factor is gone as well. I think this needs to be addressed heavily for MK10, but as I said in many threads before, it's probably not going to happen due to the focus on competitive/multiplayer gaming.

I love MK9, but where do I begin?

- No Motaro sub-boss
- No klassic MK1 thru UMK3 costumes for non-"ninja" characters.
- Online lag (MK9 is so damn unbearable online, due to massive lag)
- No Bell Tower stage fatality
- No Kombat Tomb stage
- No Pit III stage
- No Rain on the main roster
- 2 Sub-Zeros taking up space on the main roster (CSZ and SZ could have easily been consolidated into 1 character, and I've explained it too)
- Kratos on the main roster (Should have been an unlockable or given via a free code with the purchase of the game to download him)
- Nerfs and bufs for some characters were great, but terrible for others.
(I will NEVER forgive NRS for making SZ's Ground Freeze utterly useless, and cutting down his special moves to the same amount as Kano. :()

My only complaints are the lack of Motaro boss fight and how the urban MK3 levels weren't vacant, at night, and windy.

These are some pretty good points! I would perhaps add a portal stage which is also quite iconic when it comes to Mortal Kombat. I am also not a fan of guest characters of any sort, so Kratos was indeed unwelcome, but still somehow more suitable than Freddy - I never even considered downloading him.

@poptdp and Taj Gill - I could not agree more, Mortal Kombat Deception was, in my opinion, the best MK game content-wise. It had so much replay value - unlockable characters, huge krypt, chess kombat, puzzle kombat, online mode, konquest which for me never became boring. The challenge tower in MK9 was pretty weak and I have not played it again after completion, definately would have preffered different game modes.

Klassic Kostumes for the rest of the roster was a big miss as well for MK9. There's so many iconic outfits for non-Ninja characters in MK, such as Liu Kang's Bruce Lee costume (his main costume, I just call it the Bruce Lee costume) from MK1, his striped pants from MKII onwards, Kung Lao's T-Shirt in MKII, All of Raiden's costumes are pretty much iconic, I can go on and on.

Indeed. Perhaps my number 1 classic costume that should have been in MK9 is MK3 Sonya (or even MK1 Sonya for that matter) - I can't stand looking at her MK9 design, it is just plain and unbelievable - I have a really hard time believing that that is how people in military dress :/

I wish they could have done this:

I felt like it didn't take advantage of the extra content. Not talking about single player, mostly because story mode and arcade mode are enough for me. Wasn't too into the 300 challenge. I mostly wanted to see a lot of costumes, klassic costumes, extra fatalities, more klassic stages, and better fatalities over all.

Female costumes were stripperific when they should be of high value because female ninjas are part of royal society.

No Kreate A Fighter! That would've been nice to have
Also those damn bugs such as hair going through body parts.

Not every game can have KAF Nasty_Freak, lol.

I think NRS messed up by releasing costumes that were exclusive to the Vita version. It would have been nice to have alts for the DLC characters and some of those classic costumes for the rest of the cast. Would I have minded waiting a few weeks to get them in order for the Vita version to have some 'aura?' Sure, as that certainly worked for the original 'exclusive' pre-order DLC.

Vita already had their own exclusive challenge tower, which showed off some of Vita's capabilities. Those costumes though, they were salt in the wounds.

My other issue was the hype behind the challenge tower prize. I feel like NRS set themselves up for failure with the hype job they did, only for the 'prize' to be Mileena wrapped in toilet paper. Either they shouldn't have overhyped the reward, or they should have delivered. Capcom made the same mistake with Decapre & USFIV. You'd think the industry would learn from the failures of their peers/competition.

The only things I really didn't like about MK9:

No Motaro (missed him, albeit not that much)
No Portal stage (hopefully it's in MKX)
Online lag (at times it was terrible)
Freddy Krueger (made no sense to me)
Difficulty inconsistence (some parts of Story Mode were too hard)

The only complaint I had was that i found it ugly, something about the art style just felt a little off/dated to me. I loved the rest, I don't see what problem people could possibly have with the story mode...that's what modern fighting games have been missing, a reason to play single player that's actually good and entertaining. It was a good couple hours of cinematic scenes easily, and I personally found challenge tower boring but w/e...it's still way more effort than any other fighting franchise has put out recently, and I guess that's a good mode for people not too invested in the story or serious play. I'd rather a well developed story mode than a half assed beat em up or rpg mode, I like the idea of konquest but they haven't really done it in a way that i see as being anything other than a chore to complete the game so far, in my modest opinion.
