Tier Lists - What do they mean to you ?

I would like to know what is everybody's stance is on this subject. Personally, I dislike them but they make for fun conversations.

i feel the same as you do, and since i cannot play the game yet im a massive fan of reading tier lists(only because i dont have the game yet)

Tier lists are for competitive players. Higher level players with more game experience and matchup knowledge have put in the time and come to a better conclusion of how matchups work. Tier lists are important. Some characters have abilities that edge them over others, especially when played at the highest level. When examining two players of equal skill, the one with the more advantages in the matchup is expected to be able to win more.

Tiers do exist, it's actually simple logic.

two hypothetical characters. Character A has higher combo damage, easier combo set-ups, better punishing options, more space controlling tool, etc..

Therefor that makes his better or higher tier than character B.

It doesn't mean that character B can never win vs character A. It just means that character B has to work harder to win.

its very hard to make a list that is fully right though, unless there is actual AI matches then its very hard to do so and even then im not sure it could be fully acurate(for example in SSBM DK is a good character imo but his AI is just horrible compared to the others)

Yeah, I've never played at a professional level, so until now I never even realised there was such a thing as "tier lists", and I don't imagine they really mean anything at all unless you actually are playing at that level. They'd only make sense if you're talking about people who are equally skilled with those characters, which is pretty much never going to happen online. Only really would make sense at a tournament or something. Its nothing I have any real intention of paying attention to, I never expect to be at that level of play and I find min/maxing games and breaking them down into math just kills the fun for me.

If both Players A and B have the same equal skill level with both characters.

Most of the time, sure, but you forget the human mind games aspect of it. the person using character B will just have to make more correct choices to win than the person using character A. Same skill level doesn't always equate to same thinking, and alot of stuff in high-level play comes down to reading your opponent and acting on what you think your opponent may do next. Is your opponent going to use a hellfire or a spear? if you jump anticipating a hellfire and he does hellfire, you get free punish, but if he does a spear you'll get hit and he gets a combo. Hypothetically. player b will need to be correct at least 6 times in order to win, while player A only needs to be right 3 times. (again, all numbers and stats are purely made-up to show example)

Tier lists are real but what's really important is to know all of your character's matchups. If a matchup is 7-3 for example, it's good to why and to take advantage. My main game is third strike and I main necro. He's a solid character overall but he's lower tier because he has a couple really bad matchups. Yun for example is a 2-8 matchup and I have to work really hard to win...but it is winnable especially if I'm the better player.

Tier lists are crap, on a technical level they may be "helpful" but they shouldn't be taken as the gospel. I know a guy who relied soley on tier lists to determine who he played with and actually thought it made him superior to people who played "low tier" characters. when tekken 5 came out he talked soooooo much crap a few of us got together and practiced for a week paid him a visit and mopped the floor with him. his match up with my brother was the highlight of that night. dude had talked so much smack about raven that my brother decided to main him and took him out double perfect. the moral of the story is tier lists are useless especially if you have no talent.

Tiers are semi-dumb. I say semi-dumb, because without them, the fighting game community probably wouldn't be where it is now without people picking the top tiers like UMK3 Kabal and Human Smoke, or SFIV Sagat. But they're still dumb because people worry too much about them sometimes, even going as far as looking for the best character in the game, and then playing them.

can someone do a basic breakdown of how these things work as I am new to them...my guess from looking at them made it seem like each character fought each other character ten times and the number shown is how many times they won (and then total wins can be used for a general ranking of the characters vs the others) but i am not sure if this is right...especially since there are some half numbers in there (how can you win 6.5 times...does that mean it went to round 3?) and were all the matches fought in a computer simulation?

thanks for any insight!!!

Usually, they take players that actually know how to play the game and have them play A LOT and test out character match ups, and they play a ten game set, and go from there.

tier list are crap... nothing matters if you take the time to learn and study any character

Too true. I don't know why people get so wrapped up in something frivilous as a tier list. to me they seem like another way to place blame for failure "its not my fault! the tier list must be wrong!" I miss the 90s when people didnt worry about this crap and played games.

Tier Lists are normal for competitive players. I don't recommend someone play a character just because they are high tier. It takes the fun out of the game. Basically, use a character because you enjoy playing as them and prove people wrong.
