The Fountain is a movie released in 2006 directed by Darren Aronofsky, starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. It is a romantic drama film which blends elements of fantasy, history, science fiction and religion. It comprises mainly of 3 storylines, each set in the past, future and present which are interwoven together reflecting various themes of love and mortality. In each of the stories, the patroganists seek immortality to 'cure death' for various reasons and the stories showcases their journies towards the same.

This movie is a piece of art in my opinion, mainly because of how the movie allows you to try to understand and perceive the various events that happen in a number of ways. The inherent meanings of life and death, mortality and immortality is deeply ingrained in each of the stories which requires a lot of imagination to perceive.
I hold this movie very close to my heart mainly because one of the stories deals with a cancer patient and how she is afraid of death but at the end comes in terms with it, something her husband finally accepts as well.

Major props to anyone to has seen and liked this movie for what it is and how intelligently it explains various deep philosiphical concepts.:)

Saw it in the theatre, it was actually awesome. It was weird but really interesting in how it was presented. Plus, ya know, Hugh Jackman. Can't go wrong with Hugh Jackman. Even if a movie sucks, Hugh makes it awesome.

My roomate was in film school 3 years ago. Darren Aronofsky came to speak to their class for one session. My roomie said he was one of the coolest most down to earth people he has ever met. When asked what the purpose of making the movie "The Fountain" was Darren smiled, and said there was none. Having no purpose or "point" to the movie is what some people might not have liked about his movie. Darren wanted to make a movie that explored. That was his favorite thing about the movie.

He then went on to trash Michael Moore for about 30 minutes, and talked about how he hated how good of an editor Michael was, and how Michael uses deceiving film tactics to sell lies to the public through his crap BS "documentaries". :-P So Darren is alright in my book! :)

Yea, I too found it quite weird at first but then I researched some of the concepts and read through some production notes and saw it again and I was really impressed. This is the kind of movie you really need to put a lot of imginative thought into, since it is not very easily explainable at all. I think this was the reason why some people disliked the movie and it performed poorly. It did not appeal to their 'hollywood blockbuster' mentality. Also as you said the presentation was really top notch as well, although it does not seem really apparent a great deal of intricate detail has gone into each and every scene from the lighting, gestures and postures of the various characters Hugh Jackman plays. Not that its really relevant, but it just shows the amount of heart and dedication that has gone into this film and how when you take those into consideration, everything seems much more enlightening. Before this movie I consisdered Hugh to be only an action star and never thought he could pull off such emotionally and physically taxing roles. I was really blown away, the reason why he is one of my favorite actors of all time as well.

I have not seen this but it looks like something I would enjoy. Anyone know if it's on Netflix?
Yup, it was there on Netflix the last time I checked.
