Still worth buying MK9 for the PS3?

Hi guys,

Searched Google and found this forum. Seemed populated enough so decided to join in and ask a question.

I always liked the MK series. I still remember having the huge Mortal Kombat II retail box and how hard it was to find cheats on the slow-poke Internet of back then. :D

Anyways, I've been contemplating whether I should get the game now (PS3) or forget about it. I sort of skipped it when it was released and by now I actually regret that because I'm guessing some of the hype is now gone and that I might not enjoy it as much as I could have if I bought it on release. :\

I understand that now they slightly updated the game disc with a new version called "Komplete Edition"? Says it includes 4 DLC characters and some extra soundtracks, one being the OST from the first MK movie (I actually wonder why they didn't include that one on release version).

Shop-To is now offering a deal: 21.5p (shipped) so it's certainly a great deal.

Anyways, what do you guys say? Should I or should I not? I primarily look at the online feature as I almost exclusively buy online-enabled games for my PS3.

The hype is not gone man, There are plenty of offline scene tournaments, and always atleast 250+ people online.

Well this is only MY opinioin. Some people on this site don't play the game anymore.

But if my MK disc got broken. I'd buy another one, and if that one got broken...

I'd still buy it again.

That's just me though.

It is. All of the ignorance about the game is gone and everybody is learning it properly now. This game is still quite young in terms of fighting games so new stuff is being discovered all of the time, however its evolved enough that there is heaps of information about it.

If you're worried about competition there are people of all skill levels online, there are plenty of new players, mid level players and high level players around so you don't have to worry about losing game after game (although it is good for you).

I would recommend the Komplete edition, too. For obvious reasons.

Sounds good. Now, I have a question regarding of buying this game used. I understand that this game was one of the first to implement a nasty activation to cripple 2nd hand market by disabling the online feature on used copies. So how does this work exactly? Say I buy the game new, I put the disc in and then what? I heard something about a code that you get with the disc in order to enable online? If so, that means I can probably not use the code, keep it and sell an online-enabled used copy?

I know what're you saying. It's indeed true. Once the majority of the community gets dialed in with the game, it becomes a lot better. So waiting to buy it now does have benefits.

If you buy a used copy more than likely the previous owner of that copy already used the code.

you'd have to buy the code on PSN store, if you bought a used copy.

go find out how much it costs. And see if it's worth buying a used and however much to get the code

vs

just a new copy.

If you buy it used you get 3 days trial of online play, or you could buy a code of the PSN store, my recommendation buy the komplete edition new,

Yes, I think I'll just go for the komplete edition new as there aren't many used out there and the code was probably used anyway.

Last inquiry (I think). Is the DLC region locked? I can buy the UK version from Shop-To (same region that sells locally) or get one of them Asian copies from Ebay (turns out cheaper with free shipping).

I don't know about DLC.

I know the game is region locked.

I say "YES" the game is fun online as well as offline and people are always willing to help you get over the learning curve.

Beware:
The game is region locked and so are the DLCs - I know for a fact (stay away from ebay or you will learn the same lesson)

I already learnt my lesson with the region locked DLCs the other way around. My country was included in the PSN network only 2 years ago so until then, I had to register on the American store (UK store was even more restricted) and grab stuff from there. Unawaringly, I bought a DLC for Race Driver Grid which I had in UK region (02) and it didn't work. The only games I might buy regardless of region are single player games. I'm thinking games like 'The Last Guardian'. That one I'll just buy from wherever lol.

If you buy game of the year edition or complete edtion games they usually come loaded with the DLCs - I would stick to that.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I actually figured another thing today. After Komplete Edition there are no plans for more DLC (read that on various websites). Therefore I could, after all, pick an American or an Asian copy.

I was trying to think of another reason why not and then I figured online might be region locked so I looked it up and looks like the game is automatically coded to lock around your current region. E.g., if you're on the west coast you'll play vs other west coast players only. However, I'm not 100% sure about it. What I mean is, I don't know whether the game is coded to lock around a certain region according to your current location or lock according to the region of the game disc you buy. I highly assume it does work this way as PS3 games are region free, but I'm not certain.

In my country they sell Region 2 games, same as UK and Europe. I wonder if a Region 1 (NA) will give me issues when trying to go online against players from Europe once I launch the game from a Region 2 country (such as mine).
