Secrets in Mortal Kombat

Pre: I searched for a similiar thread but I didn't find anything about :???:

You know about secrets: Reptile in Mortal Kombat; Jade, Smoke and Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat II and so on.

Do you want more secrets in this new upcoming MK? Do you want to play with the secrets characters? Unlock and fight with them? Or do you think they're only hidden characters and we shouldn't unlock them?

And what about some cool easter eggs? Do you remember Jade's questions? "Hornbuckle who?" That was funny and add some good feeling to the old games.

So, do you wanna good ol' things returns or not?

They should put in a small, easy to find secret first and then when people think that's the only secret, make a wicked huge secret that is impossible to find out.

Yes! That was how they made real cool characters. I have not ever fought Reptile or Jade or any of them. But man, look at those characters now. I want those secrets!!!!!

Definitely. If they wanna bring back the awesomeness of the originals, they've got to throw in the secrets.

Secret characters should be playable, yes. But their story and such should remain a mystery.

First off, I can't stress enough how much I'd love to have secrets in the style of the cryptic clues and characters appearing. They were great additions, bringing more depth and more fun to the game. Even the ones that had no purpose, provided more interest and helped increase replayability. They could do it in new and creative ways, or stick to much of the same. Either way it'd be a wonderful nod to the old school style.

As for secret characters being playable, I'd prefer they weren't. It's the same case with the bosses. While I've said for a long time that it'd be fine if they were a challenge to obtain, I've come to the conclusion that it's better to keep them entirely NPC. Reason being, I feel that (some of) their intimidating presence is lost once they become playable. Only being able to fight them in particular situations, whether it be bosses at the top of the tower, or secret characters after a carefully played match, adds to their presence. When they become common, they become less imposing, and there is less motivation to seek them out. Realistically though, I think it's more likely that they will be playable than not.

Agreeing with Jarvis: I think it's best to keep secret characters unplayable. That's not to say there should be no 'unlockable' characters via story mode or the krypt or special challenges. But having secret characters was always fun. They should have special abilities making it a difficult fight i.e. smoke's super-speed. Of course this would mean they'd be unplayable (until the next game?).

Secret characters are definately a big part of the MK franchise's mystique. There should be at least one really hard secret character to encounter. Of course a couple of unlockables are neccessary, but there should at least a couple characters that can not be played but only fought against. And like a few have mentioned before, I really think its better to have the bosses non playable. If this supposed to be the new MK that makes the franchise fresh but, captures the games roots; bosses should not be playable just like in the first three original arcade games. Let bosses be bosses. Nuff Said.....

They should make a "Arkham Asylum" easter egg.
And With that I don't mean a batman easter egg. I mean one easter egg that no one will find ;}

It would be awesome to have ninjas run through the Living Forest giving hints on how to fight them. If Goro is the sub-boss then there should be special conditions where a over powered Kintaro comes out instead and is near imposable to beat. You get one chance to beat him. You lose and continue you fight Goro but if you win you are rewarded and move up the tower. The first time that you came up against Kintaro instead of Goro you would get stomped and you would be so excited and pissed off all at once.

Yes! I think making them playable in the next game would be the best solution!

Oh, I found these two interesting quotes:
--According to Urbano, unlocks in the new MK will put other games in the series to shame. There are way more this time around, which sounds quite daunting.

--This time, Boon says, the team is focusing more on the core game, plus offering the unlockable secrets the series is known for.

Hhm... sounds kind of like the HD Kollection, to me. So far, there's been no official statement (a.k.a. "press release"), thus, it's merely a rumor. Okay, okay.... fine, I'll be on the lookout for Zebron in MK9. :p

How exciting! Sounds fantastic.

I hope it's new characters and not the lame-ass ones from the later games.

If we don't find out anything about the HD Kollection before MK9 comes out, then I would bet that there will be hints or secret mentions in-game about the Kollection, maybe a message unlockable in the Krypt, or something like Jade/Smoke appearing before a round with a cryptic message.

Although about this Twitter tip about Reptile, I think they're talking about how he is found in the games. Meaning, in MK1 he was found out about first with rumors, and a special way to fight against him. And in MK2, he was found out in a press release (in announcements of MK2, he just was another playable character).

So doing a double flawless in the Pit with a fatality is one of the first things I'll try out in the game to see if there's some kind of secret.

That would be too easy. We already know about the double flawless in the pit. I hope they throw something completely new at us.

I'd like secret characters to be unlockable but they should be secret for a reason such as having a very nasty fatality and having a certain advantage such as immunity to projectiles (Jade).

I think hidden characters should only be unlockable if they don't have advantages in the vein of Jade from MK2. With a playable character like that, there'd be no reason to pick anyone else and you'd completely unbalance the game. If they were offline-only characters, maybe, but as cool as it might be to play as a god-tier character like that for a little while, the game would suffer for it.
